Lee Anderson, Conservative deputy chair says asylum seekers should ‘fuck off back to France’ if they don’t want to be housed on the Bobby Stockholm barge

Alex Chalk the justice secretary described Anderson’s language as ‘salty’ but ‘not bigotry at all’ ‘his indignation is well placed’.

What is happening in our country when someone like Anderson is elevated then supported by our government

However it was arranged Glorianny nobody can compare that scenario with what’s happening with the small boats.
Fit young men mainly, who have thousands of pounds to pay traffickers arriving here claiming asylum when they are in France already, a safe country. Most are economic migrants and everyone knows that.

Just to remind those who quote the Kinder Transport, the humanitarian plan which rescued Jewish children from Hitler’s gas chambers.
10,000 children came to the UK from several European countries to escape the Nazis. Children note, not their parents. Their parents weren’t allowed, sadly. Most of their parents were killed by the Nazis.
We currently have approximately 50,000, predominantly young men, in hotel accommodation. Young men!
There is the difference between the Kinder Transport and today’s migrants.
I don’t know, but maybe public opinion might be different if it was 10,000 children fleeing from certain death, to 50,000 young men, fleeing from we don’t know what, because most of them have thrown their documents away on the instructions of the traffickers.
Incidentally, Britain agreed to the 10,000 children’s arrival, as it agreed to the 150,000 people who have come from Hong Kong in the last few years, and as it agreed to the 163,000 people who came from Ukraine.
Britain is not a racist country.

Let's just qualify this a bit. The children were not made welcome by the government or rescued by them. The Kinder Transport was organised, run and financed by groups of caring and concerned people. Each child had to be sponsored and their care and education paid for. They came on temporary visas and it was expected that they would return home after the war. It was ordinary people who saved those children.

Well maybe ordinary people like my DH’s friend should open their home to these refugees…

I do agree with his sentiments ....the UK simply does not have the capacity to house more people who are only going to be a drain on finances, healthcare, schooling and tax payers money. I pass quite a few homeless in the city centre where I live, every day .....why can't our own citizens have somewhere warm and comfortable to live .....food, healthcare, a gym, entertainment ...all free ! I know many elderly people who cannot access care who would love to be there ! And as for complaining about 'signing in' and security checks ...all I can say is whenever I go on a cruise I have to: sign OUT of the ship whenever I leave to go ashore. On my return I have to : present my credentials, proof I am on the cruise, pass through a security X ray arch; pass my bag through the scanner and open it to show security ....THEN I might be allowed back on !!! and they are complaining this is against their human rights !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have to also laugh at their complaining about everything .....and as for the MP's blast, all I can say is I lived in France and my late husband was told by our doctor he needed assessment in a specialised unit at our local hospital .........a junior Dr at the hospital said to me : Take him back home to where you came from ...this unit is for FRENCH people who have paid their taxes !!!!!! I just laughed ...but did report him to the management and our doctor who apologised ! I also informed them we had been in France a long time ...paid a VERY large amount in French taxes on our worldwide income, paid into the compulsory French health insurance (which cost quite a lot) and bought everything in France .............so for these uninvited free loaders I have NO sympathy ...WHY are these mostly young, fit and male people not being sent back to wherever they come from and if there is a problem, surely THEY can help to rebuild their own country and make it a better place to live ? I may even vote Conservative owing to his speech !!!!!

Great post ALANaV 👏👏👏

This is some headline policies of Labour, I would also like to see safe passage in there as well.

I'd add UK centres for processing in key areas abroad WWM2 for that process. over all, yes, its what we've discussed and agreed to for some time.

Oreo Wed 09-Aug-23 20:20:02

The thing is, granting them leave to do paid work has it’s problems, do they speak and understand English well enough?
Since they would probably be joining a workforce with women in it are they safe people to have around as we know little about either their culture or their possible criminality?
A lot of migrants destroy their ID and any papers and often claim a different nationality to their true one.
The only thing I agree on is a drive towards faster processing of claims. If they are humanely treated on barges or in renovated military camps then that’s good enough.

Maybe if the Government paid attention to the backlog of Asylum applications and did something about that instead of venting fury at Asylum seekers and shovelling all that money into meaner and meaner methods of incarceration we would get closer to sorting out this problem. I’m sure neither migrants nor the public are happy about them being left in limbo in hotels or barges, unable to contribute to society through paid work or settle and make ties here in the UK. If they sorted out the backlog, genuine refugees and asylum seekers could be sorted from those with spurious claims and we’d all be better off. It’s maddening to hear politicians claiming that the hostile environment is to “stop the small boats”. It does nothing of the kind and is completely disengenuous. As for a senior politician saying that if they don’t like it [Bibby Stockhlom] they can F* off back to France - I’m appalled. What on earth does this do to our international reputation? If Rishi Sunack was seriously concerned with regaining standards in public office as he claimed he would insist on an apology for that.

Oreo Wed 09-Aug-23 20:07:58

The government and the slow slow processing of migrants claims is one thing , and it does need looking at, but the OP is about the Bibby Stockholm barge and suitability. If clean accommodation and good meals and leisure areas and buses into Weymouth and medical and dental care are not enough then I’d say these are economic migrants or incredibly whiny individuals.Either way they can like it or lump it.

MayBee70 Wed 09-Aug-23 19:56:03

I’m only just trying to find out more about this after watching a programme about Palestine, but I don’t think the UK treated many Jewish people very well after WWII. I guess I should start a new thread about this and I don’t have time at the moment to read up on it (childminding duties). But I do want to find out more when I can.

Wyllow3 Wed 09-Aug-23 19:54:17

Very telling article indeed.
Thank you.

I ask again, why will the government not act immediately to increase and train the decision makers?

Its more than perverse - I'm beginning to think it is deliberate, that we have fallen behind other countries so far that its now 3 years.

Deliberate to foster the hate we see.

Casdon Wed 09-Aug-23 19:53:36

That’s a fascinating report MerylStreep, it tells us all we need to know about the decisions taken to reduce performance and manufacture the backlog. I was particularly interested in the removal in 2019 of an official service standard, to decide 98% of ‘straightforward cases’ within six months.

MerylStreep Wed 09-Aug-23 19:41:24

The situation of processing hasn’t been helped by the Home Office down grading the post of a decision maker.

Yes Maddy one , thechildren have been left because the journey is often too hard and dangerous for them. There is not the safe route which could be provided if this government wasn't so intent on trying to cause friction in order to cover up their failures.
As Max Hastings said ,the right is running Britain , it's a terrifying sight.

Are you in favour of scrapping, or in favour of the Rwanda plan?

I am in favour of scrapping the Rwanda plan.

thanks for clarifying, your post could be read both ways.

You may well be correct but nonetheless the 10,000 children did come. Over one million children were murdered by the Nazis but at least 10,000 were brought here. They were children who would have been murdered had they stayed in Europe.
These men are not children, and we have no idea what they may, or may not, be running away from. And they are men, not children. The children in their families have been left behind in their original countries.

westendgirl Wed 09-Aug-23 18:48:56

Good idea Maremia, but of course nothing will happen there .

varian Wed 09-Aug-23 18:47:33

Why has Michelle Mone not been arrested?

Maremia Wed 09-Aug-23 18:41:24

Referring back to the Kinder Transport, and the 'proving' that Britain was/is not a racist country, may I point out that only children with sponsors were allowed to travel. That means many desperate youngsters were denied the chance of rescue.
And back to small boats. The small boat that outrages me the most is the luxury yacht owned by Michelle Mone, who swindled us all out of millions of pounds. Get that money back, and use it to pay for efficient staff, who can process and deal with the asylum seeker backlog.

showed two two- tier bunks to a room with very little space between them
It’s actually more room than our brave submariners defending our country have.
Even less room if your serving on a nuclear sub.

Did he reply to your e-mail ,Pippa 22 ?
I think several people have answered your claim that the men are cowards. If you go back 2 or 3 pages you will find plenty references.
As for saying that many people are in fed up etc . I'm sure there are many people who do not agree at all with your point of view.

In my opinion Lee Anderson is an articulate clever man. I fully support his comments but then unlike some people I don't think the UK should be paying £6 million a day to support people who have entered our country illegally. If they want to claim asylum they should use the legal routes. It would be cheaper for them!

The first person from the barge to be interviewed had arrived by plane ie the legal route, but was still waiting. Oh, and these people are not illegal. Disgusting and incorrect terminology.
