An election looms, so I think it is time to look at all the success over the 13 years that we have witnessed from the government.

Well, coming from me you can’t expect fulsome praise, but honestly? If I could find something I would.

Oh I know! If you are wealthy you have done very well - so that can be marked as a success.

don't know about cycle routes, Joseann, but I'm afraid the Elizabeth Line was started under Labour... 2009

OK. Like I said, I was out of the country in those years .... just observing what the differences were in the interim on my return. Infact the whole of London had changed enormously with new investment, no doubt due to the flourishing economy at the time. The regeneration of East London, my patch, was amazing. (Even the exchange rate then worked in my favour!) 😆
That's why I am prepared to go pragmatically with the ups and downs of either political party. And make the best of life.

If the Labour Party win the next general election I feel sorry for them as they will have an impossible task to undo the errors of the Tories. Of course, the Tories will then be rubbing their hands with glee when Labour struggle.

If the current polls are correct 17 cabinet members including the PM won’t win their seats at the next election, and there will be less than 100 Tory MPs left to rub their hands. Things may change of course, but at the moment the gap is widening.
The details are here.

You don’t believe those polls do you? Remember the polls said people wouldn’t vote Brexit. . Likewise Corbyn was going to be PM!! 🤣

I follow the poll tracker on Sky News, which collates all the polls from different companies. Yes, I do believe that there is only a small margin of error with collated polls.

Good things for me include the Elizabeth Tube Line and cycle routes into the capital.

Even more interesting, according to this article the tories voted against it...

Oh yes, and teenage pregnancies have more than halved since 2011.

Are you sure😄 - even with Johnson doing his level best to reverse the trend!

I partly agree there vegansrock, This Tory party is completely different from that of 20 years ago. I was abroad for most of the Blair/Brown ministry, and some of Cameron's, so the last leaders I remembered were Thatcher and Major, who were totally different from the current lot. On the surface, this lot have the shiny get things done image, but underneath they are floundering.

24 hours on and if we whittled down the successes so far they would barely fill 1/4 of a page.

Honestly it really is pathetic and very very worrying that people are still willing to give them the opportunity to do even yet more damage for another 5 years!

I’ve even gone to the desperate task of googling and asking the Tory party what are their successes - it is embarrassing.

But I will list them. It is from the first top of the page listing. This is from Richard Drax MP for South Dorset (is he still?) other desperate to keep their seats Tory MPs lists are available.

1. Brexit.

2. Delivering on the NHS - pardon - what!!?.

3. Delivering on police numbers, by giving extra funds - oh good considering that they cut them in the first b…y place.

4. Helping with the cost of living. Talking about the national living wage - highly contentious.

5. Net zero - well that has gone down the pan.

6. Putting the UK’s finances on a stronger footing - what!! Dear oh dear has he looked at our “finances” lately? We are forecast to go into recession next year.

7. Record schools budget - (what is it with the Tories that everything is the biggest - the best in the world etc. they sound like primary school children talking to each other ) highly questionable, and the latest pay settlement has to come out if it anyway.

8. Life-time skills guarantee - how’s that going then. Any outstanding examples that I can be pointed to?

9. Oh, yes and a towns fund to give us all renewed town centres and shiny non-polluted experiences. 😳

10. Investing -massive massive massive amounts apparently - or triple the amount of anything that has ever been invested into our roads and rail. And billions into broadband.

Well there you have it folks straight out of the horses mouth.

vegansrock Fri 11-Aug-23 06:49:24

When even commentators like Max Hastings call this government “a farce” people who just vote Tory out of habit should think carefully. This Tory party is completely different to that of 20 years ago. How many of Sunak’s “5 pledges” are on target? None, they are all going in the wrong direction.

You’d surely all have to agree that a democratic vote (by those who could be bothered) such as the referendum was, needed to be honoured?

Why? Since it has been proven beyond doubt, that it was NOT democratic and based on so many lies, with outside interference- that, had it been binding, would have been cancelled by the Electoral Commission?!?

I can't see how you can still see the vote or the outcome as democratic, Urmstongran.

1. Illegalities were found. Who knows what the vote would have been if all had been legal.

2. The so called "win" split the electorate almost exactly in half and has caused social disintegration.

3. The vote was only advisory unlike, say, a general election. The government could choose how they interpreted it. The most democratic decision, on such a close vote, would have been a compromise, coming out of political union but remaining in the single market and customs union or they could have re-run the vote.

4. The government behaved dishonorably at a huge cost to the country. Now far more want to rejoin than ever wanted to leave. Where is your "democracy" now, Fleurpepper?

Hetty58 Thu 10-Aug-23 23:50:16

Still thinking (12 hours on) and 13 years is a very long time - but no 'success' springs to mind.

Callistemon21 Thu 10-Aug-23 23:18:02

I'd be surprised if Mark Harper loses his seat.

I won't put a bet on any of them, though.

What about more PMs in 13 years than ever before
And of course The shortest ever term as PM.

Getting Brexit Done.
Sorry, but yes it was important to me that the result of the referendum were respected, despite many in the HoC trying to thwart it with their myriad ‘indicative votes’. We were stymied until Boris got elected. Mind you he squandered that stinking 80 seat majority - in part due to Covid. Then the war in the Ukraine. But hey - we ARE out. Massive plus for me.

Unfortunately Brexit is a massive minus for something like 70% of the population.

In your world maybe.😉

It really is about time you got over this or it will be a permanent thorn in your side.

We all actually live in the same world. And some of us actually care about how Brexit has adversely affected so many people. You only have to read the Lee Anderson thread to see what it has done to this country. Opened up a Pandora’s box of hatred.

We can’t reverse the decision, it’s too late. What will happen will be a rebuilding of the lost links and increasing compliance with EU standards so trade is smoother. I predict we will ultimately rejoin, probably in about 20 years time.

Fleurpepper Thu 10-Aug-23 21:43:40

Why. Because you havent the slightest clue what reversing the decision would do.
I voted remain. But I am not so entrenched that I dont understand that that would be a risk.

That is a totally separate issue. Several of us are strongly disagreeing, as is the Electoral Commission- that the Referendum was 'democratic'.
