ULEZ

Introduced today around London. Does it affect you? What do you think about it? Will it be rolled out across the country?

I am thinking the same as Rosie51. It seems it is just a money making exercise. Is the money raised going to 'Green' policies ie grants for home insulations etc.

As Maizie says, the Tories do indeed have short memories, as they started this policy with Boris.

Although Ken Livingstone introduced the congestion charges in the first instance.

Is the ULEZ charge in addition to the Congestion charge?

£15 congestion charge has to be paid if you go into central London between certain times regardless of vehicle, this is on top of the ULEZ charge for non compliant vehicles.

Rosie51 Tue 29-Aug-23 16:45:09

Only £15 if you have a payment card registered with them so they can automatically take payment. Occasional visitors who don't have this set up are charged £17.50 per day. Apparently if you can afford these prices your vehicle isn't causing congestion. Doesn't affect me as I don't drive into central London.

Callistemon21 Tue 29-Aug-23 16:53:01

I have a newer Yaris, M0nica, and didn't realise you'd changed yours. Mine is still not compliant.

Callistemon21 Tue 29-Aug-23 16:57:19

Approximately 80% of the vehicles on UK roads already meet minimum ULEZ emissions standards: Euro 4 for petrol (from January 2006) and the tougher Euro 6 for diesel (from September 2015).
This means that every petrol or petrol-electric hybrid Toyota produced since January 2006 is ULEZ compliant and therefore exempt from paying this surcharge.

From a Toyota website.

I'm 🤔 as when I typed in the registration it said mine was not compliant.
This could cause much confusion.

I don’t wish to teach my grandmother how to suck eggs but just in case no one’s heard this:
Beware of scam sites to pay the charge. The scammers are paying top rate to Google to be top of the list if you search how to pay ULEZ charge

welbeck Tue 29-Aug-23 16:59:51

i had an 2001 nissan almera that was compliant.
rather annoyed i had to get rid of it for other reasons.
you need to check the reg plate, can't just go by years.
though obviously, the older it is, less likely to comply.

It’s not going to raise much cash and the money is going on public transport which the government do not subsidise . I’m in the ULEZ zone and am all in favour. Khan refuses to stop free transport for the oldies and under 16s which the government want him to do. The hope is that there will be fewer and fewer non compliant vehicles . Many other cities will copy . The Tory
Mayoral candidate is ghastly.

Is she? I've never voted Tory, but she struck me as sensible, so I may well vote for her next May.

It certainly won't be a vote for Khan. He's been a disaster in every way,🙁

welbeck Tue 29-Aug-23 17:00:45

suggestions that everyone will have to pay something soon anyway, the cameras can be used for pay per mile.

Something new happens and the scammers are on to it straight away!

the tory candidate is still very pro-boris, and has said things that many see as (almost) racist.
when challenged, she refused to amend her comments.
so that might produce some tactical voting.

They couldn't find my car the next time I tried, it doesn't exist according to motorway.co.uk!
Don't use that site.

Checked with ulez.co.uk and yes, it is compliant.

Not that I'll be driving in London.

welbeck Tue 29-Aug-23 17:15:26

i wouldn't trust anything but the official site. tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle/?intcmp=53526

I'm shocked at how big London is now.

I used to live in Orpington which was in Kent but is now in London!

maddyone Tue 29-Aug-23 17:24:48

Monica I think we’ve discussed this before but I also have an i20 like you, but mine is eleven years old and ULEZ compliant. On the other hand my husband’s VW Passat is not ULEZ compliant although it is younger. It is nine years old. It’s a beautiful car and extremely comfortable to ride in and he has no intention of changing it yet. We went into central London recently to the theatre and we went in the Passat. We paid the Congestion charge and ULEZ because we crossed both areas on our way into the city. We went in the Passat because it is such a comfortable car, and because my car needs a new part on the air conditioning (I’ve had the gas topped up but it turns out it needs a new, quite expensive part) and as I’m taking delivery of a new i20 next month, I don’t think it’s worth having the new part fitted. We don’t travel into central London often enough to be worried about the charges, although I’m glad my son no longer lives in Ealing as we used to do a day a week childcare for him and now Ealing is included in the ULEZ scheme.
I have very mixed feelings about this. We need cleaner air but those who will be paying these charges are the ones least able to afford them. I saw on the morning television programme an 82 year old man who only uses his non compliant car to go shopping and to the doctor’s. He cannot afford to scrap his car and he cannot walk to the shops. He cannot carry his weekly shopping home on the bus either. So he feels he will be confined to his home and have to have his shopping delivered. Is this what we wanted to achieve? I doubt he’s adding much to poor air quality with his weekly visits to the supermarket. However it’s fine for us to just pay the charge and go into central London to see a play? Just because we can afford to?

Yes London has swallowed up a lot of Kent over the past few years. I was brought up near orpington,
They have been after our town for a while, but so far we are holding the wall. Coukd be interested because of the excellent travel benefits though….free trains tubes buses etc. makes a day in London very affordable .

Georgesgran Tue 29-Aug-23 17:29:11

Parts of Newcastle and Gateshead are designated as CAZ - clean air zones. As yet private cars aren’t charged, but non-compliant taxis, vans, buses and HGVs are.

the present boundaries were set in 1965.

If you want to keep your freedom pass don’t trust the Tories - they were trying to halt the free transport.

DiamondLily Tue 29-Aug-23 18:14:19

I've got a disabled freedom pass which is valid until 2025 - unlike the elderly one, it's valid 24/7. Khan changed the rules to put the elderly one back to less hours,

I'll hang onto my pass until I have to renew,

Khan is trying to make life difficult, so I won't be voting for him next May.🙄

Yeah, I live in `Chislehurst, outskirts of Orpington. Absolute ructions going on here with it.

Callistemon It is a sad story. An idiot drove into it on a cross roads last February and, because of its age, it was deemed not worth repairing. I was quite upset at the time. I thought we would both eventually go to the final sunset together.

Oh dear.
As long as you were ok though.

Mine is a youngster in comparison.

If you're talking about her comments re the carnival, she is right. Do you know how many people were stabbed on Monday, 8, yes 8. One critical, one in a serious condition but stable condition. One police officer sexually assaulted, another in hospital, 6 others bitten. Just look at the pictures and open your eyes. Some people do not like the truth. Very 😡

Really? Time to think again. This example of 'least able to afford it' is just pathetic. A cab to the shops and doctor is far cheaper than running a car.

I'm far more concerned about those people having their lives cut short by air pollution, the children with lungs injured by NO2, at risk of chronic lung disease. At least ULEZ is a small step in the right direction.
