Gavin Williamson told to apologise and undertake behaviour training for bullying the former chief whip. News out about millions spent by Education mistier to refurbish her office. Chris Pincher looses appeal against his 8 week suspension (probable further bye-election) PM tries to reject evidence that while Chancellor he reduced school rebuilding spending needed for 400 to 100 then 50 schools, reducing spend from £765m to £ 416m. Jeremy Hunt declared on Sunday TV the schools problem to be addressed but no new money available - so another raid on school budgets?? Lots of people reminiscing on Johnson’s 40 hospital promise, one of which claimed by Hancock, now exposed as suffering from the concrete scandal!

Surely we do know why, LLFO . To be ready to cause problems for an incoming opposition government .

Chris Pinscher (Tamworth), has just resigned with immediate effect, so another by-election looming:

Ladyleftfieldlover

Just to remind us all - we still don’t know why Charlotte Owen, a young woman with little experience, was sent to the Lord’s on B Johnson’s resignation list. She is now there for life and we don’t know why,

She’s is busy showing her gratitude by faithfully voting for the government.

I read that Sunak has declined to attend the UN summit on climate being attended by the worlds leaders as he was told that he faced exclusion from key discussions because of his ineptitude on climate change and his unambitious targets. Sunak raised eyebrows world wide when he gave licences to “max out” extraction of oil and gas in the North Sea.

He is sending Cleverly and Dowden in his place.

He is the first PM that has failed to attend - all the world leaders will be there including Biden.

Earlier this week the government failed to get a single tender for the planned offshore wind farms. The reason being that the failed to understand the current market and undervalued the unit cost of the energy

And today I see the Tories have dropped two prospective GE candidates after warnings from MI5 about Chinese spies. How embarrassing - don't they have selection criteria?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-Sep-23 15:35:55

Apparently according to Rory Stewart (who is rumoured to have worked for MI6) the intention is to influence policy, like Putin and Brexit.

Clearly it works.

Meanwhile in Scotland .

·
“In October 2022 the Scottish Govt allocated £528m specifically for Health & Social Care, specifically to be spent for winter preparation. This is equivalent to over £5bn in England.
Meanwhile, the U.K. govt committed to £200m (the equivalent of £20m in Scotland) for Social Care only. No additional winter fund for the NHS. Scotland provided more to recruit paramedics and ambulance staff (£40m) than the U.K. govt did to the entire NHS in England.
Plus £120m (England equivalent £1.2bn) to enhance care homes, and £144m (equiv. £1.4bn) to expand care at home. This was on top of £200m just to increase the hourly rate of adult care workers in Scotland. £8m to recruit nurses from overseas for the winter, 130 additional doctor training posts, and overtime allowance for final year GP trainees to work out of hours.
£50m just for urgent care… that is the equivalent of £500m for more A&E and acute medical staff in England just for the winter months!!! These are the folks that treat heart attacks, strokes, sepsis, broken bones…
Meanwhile the U.K. govt are putting £15bn into diagnostic centres (many private) and only deal with uncomplicated simple conditions, not sepsis, strokes, heart attacks!!!
And £250m for 900 beds by April 2024!
That’s it.
But perhaps one of the most impactful things the Scottish govt did was to reduce the harm caused by 13 yrs of Tory austerity by focusing on the cost of living crisis:
£3bn to support people hit hardest… that is equivalent to £30bn in England. A rent freeze over the winter until March 2023. A no eviction law over the winter - people could not be evicted if they couldn’t afford rent, extra support to disabled children, those who are vulnerable, and also free school meals.
This stuff keeps people alive and out of hospital!!!
Also an extra £124m to provide hospital care at home and prevent hospital admissions. Imagine getting an extra £1.2bn in England to expand hospital at home!!!
The key is not just how much money is invested but where it is invested. Look at U.K. govt, investing in expanding private care - which during winter makes even less sense.
Scotland invested in urgent care, ambulances, expanding care at home, actually doing something ubstantial to recruit and retain staff, and actually giving the NHS money to pay overtime to existing staff so we can actually take on more activity. These are the actions of a govt trying to save the NHS and patients versus trying to enhance private care.”

Tobias Elwood has just resigned from something but I’m not sure what…some sort of committee he’s on. He is one of the few decent Conservative MP’s left.

MaizieD Wed 13-Sep-23 19:10:33

Elwood has resigned as chair of the Defence Select Committee. Perhaps he doesn't like Sunak's choice of Sec. of State for Defence, Gavin Williamson, wasn't it? grin

Iam64 Wed 13-Sep-23 19:49:51

If only these decent tories would get really cross 😅

Lords have defeated the government on their intention to get rid of planning laws relating to development and pollution, the law as it stands requires developers to offset any extra nutrient pollution they cause, particularly in sensitive areas, under the habitat direction.

The government has tried to do this despite their promise not to weaken environmental protection, and of course even more river pollution.

Labour also opposes the plan, but recognises the need for more housing, and is prepared to talk to both government and developers to help to work on the problem.

I've since discovered that Ellwood resigned because he was facing a vote of no confidence by Defence Committee members over remarks he made apparently approving the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. shock

What is this obsession with getting people to apologise? Discipline is not the same as bullying. If people are lackadaisical in their attitude, telling them to pull their socks up is the right thing to do. It's this sort of attitude which is causing the decline of standards in this country. Some people won't do their job properly unless there is someone standing over them with a whip.

There was a time when an MP did something wrong, they resigned and went on to do other things. The prime example being Profumo who, after leaving parliament, worked as a volunteer for a charity for the rest of his life.

I think he tried to point out that they’re there to stay and, for the good of the people, we need to work with them. His party are using it as a way to get rid of him because he’s far too left wing for the. It’s just my interpretation of what happened though and I could be completely wrong. Apologies in advance if I have.

An article in today's Telegraph exposes how Truss had to be confronted urgently by top officials and advice in writing to get her to change tack on the Kwarteng disastrous mini-Budget which she had encouraged. Obviously unsuited to be PM or any other top post - chosen by the ignorant Tory grassroots.

Yes he resigned, after his Taliban remarks, from the Defence Committe.

Paddyann, thanks for the list. Those details are nowhere to be seen in MSM, or even some of the 'Scottish' press.

MayBee70 Sun 17-Sep-23 18:47:01

Maybe this country and America shouldn’t’ve left Afghanistan so suddenly. The whole thing was a debacle and we let the Afghan people down so badly. Maybe I’m wrong but I would assume Ellwood was pointing out that the Taliban are there to stay, thanks to us, and it’s better that we keep a dialogue going with them than ignore them. I trust Ellwood’s opinion more than that of Mark Francoise. weren’t there allegations made about Francoise the other year?

Looks like the Tories rush towards net zero will be abandoned this week:

A year ago Truss trashed the economy which was already tottering in the 49 days that she was PM and has now made a mad speech about how it was the “dark forces” fault and certainly nothing to do with her extreme laissez faire ideology.

What is it with these people like Truss, Trump and Johnson who never take the rap for their decisions? In fact bizarrely they actually seem to make money out of their destructive policies.

I keep wondering who is backing her now she seems to be on the comeback trail. Tufton Street?People are still suffering from her actions.

At least they've not failed on one thing; the rich have continued to get richer and the poor, poorer throughout their administration.

There were 53 billionaires in the UK in 2010 and 177 in 2022.

There were 53 billionaires in the UK in 2010 and 177 in 2022.

One has to ask, How have they acquired that wealth? Where has the money come from?

I think she’s beyond political rehabilitation myself.
