Harry, Meghan and the Invictus Games

Now the Invictus Games have finished, it was a triumph for M&H who showed what they were capable of, mixing and socialising with the competitors and their families with ease and enjoyment. They have been widely praised in other countries. Coverage here seemed to be patchy. Which seems a bit strange and not right for the competitors. But can anyone doubt that the couple could have been a great asset, and modernised the RF, or that Meghan looks so much happier and more relaxed than when she was subjected to royal protocol?

Attlee, there was plenty of coverage if people wanted to watch or find out.
The RBL had information on the background of the participants and the BBC broadcast of all the action live across its online platform. Some events every day day were shown live on BBC iPlayer and Red Button.
In general, the media only seemed to focus on H&M, presumably because that would sell better than news about the athletes.

Google Invictus games 2023 and you get videos of . . . H&M.
Google images of Invictus games 2023 and you get pictures of . . . H&M.
It almost seems that their attendance detracted from attention to the achievements of the athletes.

Could you explain old fashioned and perhaps point out the examples on here?

I don't think BBCi player, the on-line platform or the RBL can be considered as mainstream media. There was little coverage on any mainstream news channel.
I think the presence of H&M was much appreciated and enjoyed by the athletes and their families.
I think the reason it was not shown much in the UK is because it shows H&M in a positive light and that is threatening to the RF.

It is yet another unwarranted jibe at older people on a forum designed for older people!!

It is becoming too prevalent, lately, unfortunately.

It is not old fashion to criticise liars

Attlee Sun 17-Sept-23 23:31:42

More media coverage would indeed be great for this fantastic event, but I wonder why they don't?
No I don't really wonder...
There are some quite nasty and old fashioned views on this thread, which were unpleasant to read

So, as predicted, it has ended up all about Meghan and Harry and not about the Games.

It. would be much easier to discuss the games if some of the media had reported on them. As it is there is little we can say because we know so little.
There's a website with Ukraine's acheivements www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2023/09/16/7420140/

But I heard one person saying that it is never about the medals and the last person to finish is cheered as loudly as the first. More media overage would be great.

Anniebach Sun 17-Sept-23 22:14:59

She loves a grand entrance, even made one on the day on her second wedding and in virginal white.

Callistemon21 Sun 17-Sept-23 22:11:10

I have a friend who likes to make an entrance.
When I was giving her a lift to an event, she insisted we needn't leave at a certain time in order to get a seat, even said she wanted everyone to notice when she arrived!

We got the last two seats near the door where it was draughty.
At least Harry saved Meghan a good seat.

I’m sure this is why Meghan delayed her appearance. Let Harry get all the boring stuff out of the way then she could have centre stage.

Glorianny* The white jacket she wore proved so popular the website selling it crashed. It was J Crew.

No it wasn't. It was a designer jacket costing nearly £1,500. Plus she wore tens of thousands of pounds worth of jewellery.

Here's the story. Click on the link to see the jacket. www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/meghan-markle-sweater-blazer_l_6501e9cee4b0e254edce92e6

Now what evidence have you that it was designer?

Much of her jewellery has been given to her.

Here’s a non British, non biased resume of what Meghan wore.

You don’t need to look hard to spot that she wore a lot of designer labels, and I covet the two tone sling back Chanel pumps (£840), they are lovely.

Nevertheless to say that that the RF had nothing to do with the games is also inaccurate . To say that it was Harry's brainchild is also inaccurate. P.W also contributed the settlement he was awarded by the court case some years ago, to the Invictus Games, About £million.

Callistemon21 Sun 17-Sept-23 20:45:14

I did think I'd seen the white shirt before. 😁

That's a nice photo.

Now - should we campaign to have the Invictus Games on mainstream TV? Why not?
Harry?

Sorry about the photo the first one I wanted didn't work and that was a quick replacement But here's one you might like

The money Netflix paid for the documentary about the Games has been donated to the Games

Of course! As it should be.

Harry didn't start the games independently of the Royals . He got the idea from the American Warrior games in 2013. They were instigated in collaboration between the Royal Foundation of the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Ministry of Defence and launched in 2014. Prince William and Catherine contributed $1m in 2020. The Royal Foundation transferred $11 million to the games last year. Not many people seem to be aware of this financial support, particularly Prince Harry.

Thank you Jaberwok, as well.

Interesting.

That's slightly inaccurate. The Invictus website says that The Royal Foundation became The Endeavour Fund
The Endeavour Fund was also curated by the Royal Foundation, but in 2020, was transferred across to the Invictus Games Foundation.

It was misreported at the time that the Royal Foundation had 'gifted' £500k to the Invictus Games Foundation. The transfer amount we disclosed in 2021 actually reflects the move of the Endeavour Fund grants programme out of the Royal Foundation and into the Invictus Games Foundation, to create one home for supporting the recovery of international wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women

Harry knows where the money comes from. The money Netflix paid for the documentary about the Games has been donated to the Games.

DiamondLily people are going to talk about H &M , no different to any tv celebrities.

Yes, but as Harry started this whole thing, independent of the royals, it should still be applauded.

It, obviously, brings a lot to the competitors.

It has nothing to do with Charles, William, Kate, or what they might think.

They are irrelevant in this.

Well that is not exactly true is it?

The Invictus Games was originally set up as one of Harry's projects within the Royal family and £500,000 of the start-up funding came from the Royal Foundation which at the time was a charitable foundation started by Prince Harry together with Prince William in 2009 and later Catherine when she joined the Royal Family they put their wedding donations into the foundation. The Endeavour fund which included the Invictus Games was a fund within the Foundation created by William and Harry for the funding of projects to support service personnel.
royalfoundation.com/our-history/

I understand that this has now been separated out after Harry and Meghan left royal life and that they pursue it as a private patronage

Anniebach Sun 17-Sept-23 18:40:50

Surely every charity event is worthwhile

It's very difficult not to discuss H and M isn't it? Their perpetual whining and complaining, whilst remaining completely oblivious of their many privileges, is akin to having tinnitus in both ears - hard to ignore and extremely irritating.

I don't find the royals, any of them, hard to ignore.

But, I do think this event is something worthwhile. 👍
