I think when she says “multiculturalism hasn’t worked” she means there are too many women wearing headscarves.
Good Morning Thursday 7th May 2026
I’m so ashamed that she’s representing my country in such a horrible way in America. At least people are now questioning the fact that as a daughter of migrants she now wants to stop other people from fleeing oppression.
I think when she says “multiculturalism hasn’t worked” she means there are too many women wearing headscarves.
Casdon
There are some very scary views on this site. We are one of the richest countries in the world, and an accident of birth does not excuse British people from being global citizens and having a responsibility for others for goodness sake. (NB saying English is even more discriminatory). I despair, I really do.
Quite agree with you in your despair, Casdon. In fact Scotland needs immigration, but we don't get it as there is no proper resettlement programme to help take some pressure off the places which do get a lot of immigrants. I suspect Wales may be in the same position.
Urmstomgran totally agree with you , this little Island is slowly sinking with all immigration issues . We can’t even house people who have been born here so how the hell are we expected to take so many others in?

“Fearing discrimination for being a woman is not sufficient to claim refugee status”
Tell that to women in Afghanistan. Perhaps Braverman should try living there - at least we would never hear from her again!
Quite 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Suella Braverman is speaking hard common sense. England is being treated as a life-raft, and is in danger of being swamped by the numbers attempting to climb on board
Agree 100% I make no secret of the fact that I belong to a hard right anti immigration party.
We were shocked at the Americans electing Trump but we have managed to score an own goal with Braverman, Johnson and their ilk. Shameful to be represented by them.
Good post, Grantanow.
Braverman's real job is to attract racist and anti-immigration votes to the Tories at the next GE, not to solve problems. She is the dog that barks so Sunak doesn't have to.
Deedaa what does full integration into any country mean?
Italians living in the Uk during and after WW2 were interned and discriminated against. It’s only in more recent times that Italian families have been more comfortable living here.
Interesting that a woman who has risen to be Home Secretary says that multiculturalism hasn't worked. I wonder how she feels about Italian immigration in London. Italians have been moving into the East End for 200 years, they have their beautiful church where all the masses are held in Italian, and their are still many who speak Italian rather than English. Does she worry about whether they are fully integrated - or doesn't it matter because they are white?
Too busy worrying about potholes.
She said it on the news last night: I presume it was Sky but I can’t be certain. She said Sunak would have had a copy of the speech because she always follows the guidelines ( that’s a lie to start off with) but you’d have to ask him if he’d read it.
I had read that she said Number 10 would have seen it, but when he was asked today if he endorsed her comments on multiculturalism, he said he did not, that the UK should be proud of how well it managed to be a multicultural democracy, and that he was proof that multiculturalism works. He also said, when asked about leaving the ECHR, that he was confident UK asylum proposals would be within international law.
I’m not sure he’s being entirely honest about his views, but at least he’s aware that swivel eyed lunacy isn’t a great look for a Minister.
Has he? I thought that No 10 had approved her speech.
Thanks, choughdancer.
Interesting that Sunak has refused to support her comments.
Glorianny
I'm just wondering how Braverman intends to identify genuine gay people, from those "pretending".
I can't believe that she thinks we should only offer shelter to people who have been tortured. Presumably she'll want to see actual proof of the torture as well.
How on earth have we finished up with a woman like thiis speaking for the UK?
As for the cost, more efficient processing and allowing people to work whilst their application is processed would considerably reduce those. Many employers have said they would welcome asylum seekers as employees.
There are so many comments I would like to quote here!
This one shows how the government is covering up their inefficiency. As Glorianny says, if the processing hadn't been so inefficient over the last few years, and if some provision had been made for asylum seekers to be able to work while awaiting the outcome of their application, the cost would be a fraction of the oft-repeated £7 million a day.
And yes Siope, I also want you to go 'boring' on! accurate statements and figures are vital!
Why am I not surprised, varian?
All of Suella Braverman’s claims on asylum seekers and migration from her US speech, fact-checked
inews.co.uk/news/suella-braverman-claims-asylum-seekers-migration-us-speech-fact-checked-2645365?utm_medium=Newsletter&utm_source=Sailthru&utm_campaign=i_the_essential_280923&utm_term=editorial_the_essential_active_users
Most of her claims prove to be false or misleading.
Last night on tv she said that Sunak would have been given a copy of her speech and that she always followed the rules. But even Truss had to sack her for breaking the ministerial code. She’s now threatening to leave the ECHR if they continue to block her Rwanda plan. Of course, many people will support her because it has the word European in it. She’s a loose cannon.

How in earth did she manage to be Attorney General?
I dont think she excelled in that position.
Johnson needed an Attorney General that would happily allow him to break and bend rules.
To be clear: she is not correct (legally or morally) that it’s not persecution unless it involves torture, and she’s lying through her teeth about floods of asylum seekers either being, or pretending to be, gay.
In that instance, she is almost correct. As I have already said, the Refugee Convention protects gay people only when the discrimination they face is serious enough to count as persecution.
Persecution is defined in British immigration law (enacted under this government by Patel). I’ve quoted the relevant legislation earlier.

I don’t know Glorianny it must be a really difficult job, but men or women claiming to be persecuted for being gay would have to have some evidence or at least be able to prove which country they are really from.
But Braverman doesn't think that coming from a country where gay people or women are discriminated against is a good reason for seeking asylum. They need. to show evidence that they have been mis-treated. or tortured.
I know someone who claimed they were Gay to get into Medical School. Tried before serveral times no luck due to competition (already a Clinical Graduate).
Now a very senior Doctor.
