A very long time ago, my dissertation was on settlement of migrants in one particular town in the UK. I remember being surprised that some females were not learning English and were very much home based. There was no integration of females into mainstream English culture at that time and that traditions and culture were followed from the home country unsurprisingly. It seemed to me that male children were favoured over female ones in traditional families.
We have several acquaintances who were originally from Bangladesh, the men and male children socialise, speak perfect English, the boys learn to drive as soon as they are 17.
Meanwhile the wives speak little English, only socialise with other Bangladeshi women. The girls have Western freedoms whilst at school, but return home to a different way of life. We only know one family who send their under fives to pre-school and the wife works outside of the home.
I am in no way critiquing their lifestyle, but get why some might.
Similar I guess to some English enclaves abroad.
