Another pointless knife crime death

Teenage gang culture prob the reason the boy was carrying the knife in the first place and I think reducing this cneeds stiffer policing and deterrents as much or more than youth work. Stopping the knives far more important than stopping the boats.

Of course the resumption of Sure Start and parenting classes very important as well but getting to grips with knife crime can’t wait ten years.

There was an audience member on Question Time yesterday who had worked for many years with young people who spoke in the same vein about the damage the cuts had done to youth services .Worth listening to .

Very sad, and I feel so sorry for the family and friends of that poor girl. Grantanow is right, funding for youth services needs to be stepped up. The Violence Reduction Unit in Glasgow has had some success in reducing knife crime, but more needs to be done, and constant cutting of funding for youth services and the police does nothing to help.

I know a primary teacher who was doing work on crime and the justice system with her class of P5s (8-9 year-olds) and one boy was quite convinced that it is ok to carry a knife for self-defence. Intervention obviously has to start young.

This is a tragedy all round, for the young girl and her family, for the friend and her family and for the young man and his family , not forgetting their friend and the circle in whicg they lived and moved.
I think to use phrases like lowlife is not necessary. I don't know the real story or the surroundings . It does sound complicated and is , as I said absolutely tragic.

The Tories have almost entirely cut youth and other local services and this is the result. We need to invest in youth at all levels. Of course policing has to be effective but it was reported 100,000 knives were confiscated by police: it's not possible to sentence 100,000 young people to jail terms - where would they be housed? Community policing is absent, trust has broken down especially in London and other cities and racism is a factor in the Met. Publicity is not much given to male knife crime deaths which exceed those of females.

I hadn’t thought of that. Why should a murderer be protected?

Such a beautiful girl, her life and all that potential snatched away in a moment because she was standing up for her friend.

Heart breaking! What on earth is happening to today's youth!? Like everyone else I am shocked and horrified at yet another death caused by stabbing. I am unable to stop thinking about this and why a young person carries a knife 😡. No matter how young the the knife bearer is the punishment should be very severe! My thoughts are with this girl and her family. The boys parents must be in despair too. What is the solution?.

It’s not just about increasing sentences. We need to work with children from primary school upwards to give them some stake in society. More resources for youth services, sports clubs, boxing gyms, mentoring, support for local councils and better staffing ratios in schools - all things that have been cut in recent years- prevention is better than cure.

It's about time we had stricter laws. For instance, imprisonment for carrying a knife or gun. And for younger criminals something along the same lines. Our soft sentences don't deter anybody. Also I think that those who have been the victim of these type of crimes or a perpetrator who has served their time should give talks in schools - with graphic photos. These youngsters need to be told in no uncertain terms what will happen if they carry out these crimes instead of carrying knives being perceived as being "cool". Also - what type of parents do these people have!

This was a terrible piece of news yesterday, that poor girl and her family. Still puzzling about the assailant, allegedly a 17 year old boy, who leaves home with a bunch of flowers and a serrated, dagger type of knife?

When I left home, I lived in Croydon for a few years during my 20s, albeit a long time ago now, I don't think I ever felt unsafe there, now I gather the gangs and stabbings are very prevalent around the town and surrounding environs.

What about the parents of the boy who murdered this girl? And actually, the boy himself. He must be deranged.

The number of teen murders is truly shocking. Lives destroyed for nothing.

There was a young lad murdered, in a local park, in broad daylight, last week. In a nice area, for no apparent reason.

The police are still appealing for witnesses.

It didn't get the publicity of this one, but just as sad. Another devastated family.

I feel so sorry for them all. His family must be shocked. I wish kids would stop carrying knives. Poor girl just trying to protect her friend. Such a waste of so many lives.

No mother sends their fifteen year old daughter off to school thinking it’s the last time I will see her smile or hear her speak.
