I don’t care how many letters he has after his name, how does he not see this as cheating?

this seems to be an issue that largely divides on age lines.
the elders are v concerned, the youngers think they are misguided, or narrow-minded, or something; ie that there is no problem, except prejudice.
not sure where the divide falls, about age 40, maybe ?
i guess others have noticed this too.

No, it is not divided on age lines.
It is divided into those who have an understanding of biology and genetics and understand the difference between sex and gender and those who do not.

Many under 40s seem to have missed hearing about this dramatic ability to change sex, too. 🤔

These threads are always biased. It makes me so sad. They won the award for being a LGBTQIA+champion therefore it was not pertinent which gender they were themselves.

50 years ago would you all have been harping about black rights activists?

I hope and pray that you can open your hearts and minds just a little bit.

Please do not liken this to black rights.

And do not patronise with your offer to pray either.

I'm a tad confused here.

Why did this person's gender ID matter in the context of this award?

I can understand in sport that males have an advantage over women in most sports, but why is it even an issue in this case? Why would be being born a male give the person an advantage?

PS. I do think people's attitudes tend to divide on age lines.

The tweet says "I was awarded the East Midlands outstanding FEMALE.........." A transwoman is not by any definition female, or are we not to have any word for that sex designed to provide the large gamete in sexual reproduction? It is very pertinent what sex wins a female award.

I very much doubt any of us would have been "harping" about black rights activists, nor before you raise it gay rights activists. Why try to malign women who merely are concerned about women being shoved aside at every opportunity? What is it about males taking awards meant for females in sports, literary awards, business awards etc etc that you think is so inherently "fair"?

Errmm .. I disagree. A transwoman might not be female by your definition, but there are other definitions.

maddyone Fri 29-Sept-23 00:20:36

What’s the person done to actually win the award? I’m confused.

Namsnanny Fri 29-Sept-23 00:31:04

For championing the cause (or possibly a person) of Lgb rights, I'm not sure how.

But the point being made is it is an award for a female but a male has won it, maddyone

At least that's how I've read it.

Caravansera Fri 29-Sept-23 00:50:21

There are fifteen awards in total at this ceremony. This is the only one that clearly states:

This award recognises the individual who identifies as female and has made an outstanding and substantial contribution to raising awareness of the issues around equality particularly for the LGBTQIA+ community in the region in the past 24 months.

It is not right and everyone knows it, but hey, win at all costs.

Who is this 'everyone' easybee?

Fairly obviously is is only people with your cultural view who disagree, and fairly obviously that isn't "everyone", as this person was given the award by a group with an entirely different view.

tickingbird Fri 29-Sept-23 08:02:11

Just more pandering to the trans lobby.

Isn't everyone entitled to a view? Even onexwe do not understand. We seem to hear "I'm entitled to my opinion" very regularly on GN. If that is true surely it applies to all culturally based views?

Galaxy Fri 29-Sept-23 08:16:51

Well yes people are entitled to say the world is flat however if we start organising society on that basis we might hit problems.

Parsley3 Fri 29-Sept-23 08:17:28

Read the link supplied by Caravansera. The award is for a person identifying as a woman which the winner clearly is. There is also an award for a man who supports women. Actually, the awards are rather inclusive and no-one is cheating, imo.

Galaxy Fri 29-Sept-23 08:18:51

You cant identify as a woman if you are a man I am afraid.

Oh that makes more sense..

Galaxy Fri 29-Sept-23 08:19:54

Well you can identify as anything but it doesnt make it true. It also reinforces stereotypes in a rather brutal way.

NotSpaghetti Fri 29-Sept-23 08:27:54

Any trans Men would have been in Mens awards. Just as trans women were in this one.

Would people have been happier if a trans man had won the Women's award?

Just wondering.

A good example. Belief in a flat Earth among educated Europeans was almost nonexistent from the Late Middle Ages onwards. It tended to be the "everybody knows" group, the church and governments who kept pushing the Flat Earth myth. All of those groups had some level of gain by doing so.

Galaxy Fri 29-Sept-23 08:44:37

I am very happy for transmen to be in womens spaces if we are broadening the debate, for example as a rule transmen are not housed in female prisons for obvious reasons.

which forces ?

Any organisations and individuals who have the financial clout and desire, to be able to do so.

Even Governments have to be mindful of who they have borrowed money from.

So what is the definition of female? Is there a word that exclusively denotes the sex in mammals that provides the large immotile gamete in sexual reproduction? It could be very useful for classification purposes.

Doodledog Fri 29-Sept-23 09:38:48

Yes, and who gets to have their definition hold? Not women themselves, I’d bet.

Rosie51 Fri 29-Sept-23 09:55:37

Why is it that only the words woman and female are always up for re-definition? There isn't any debate about man or male. Is that because men are more accepting, or could it be that transmen aka females aren't as aggressive or demanding? It's interesting to note that the sex-specific screening for prostate cancer refers to men, never 'bodies with a prostate', and I've not heard one squeak of disapproval from the trans lobby or their supporters.

I didn’t say not everyone was entitled to a view though. Best not to put your own spin on posts.

DaisyAnneReturns Fri 29-Sept-23 10:53:53

I didn't. Your "... pandering to the trans lobby.", implied you did not accept they were entitled to the view they hold.

Perhaps you should take heed of your own advice that it's "Best not to put your own spin on posts.", and not try to "spin" what others are saying.
