Just Stop Oil halts Les Miserables show as protesters storm stage in London's West End

DrWatson Mon 09-Oct-23 04:59:46

For NannyCl, you're comparing chalk and cheese. The suffragettes had the ruling men against them, they needed to get public acceptance. Re climate change, most of western Europe, certainly including UK, has made giant strides to go greener. The British public is broadly onside with trying to make such changes.

BUT -- as Libra10 quite accurately says, all those efforts are far outweighed by the continuing actions of China, India, USA, Brazil & Russia, the dirtiest countries.

The babbling hypocrisy of the likes of Just Stop Oil is so perverse it's painful, you can guarantee they buy Chinese cr*p and take flights when it suits them. Chris Packham is a powerful voice for that cause, he was on the radio recently, talking about how he'd got stuck in traffic on the way to some event for the cause. Sorry Chris, did you say "stuck in traffic"? What, on a train or on a bicycle?? . . . .

My first thought when I heard of this , was I would have been pretty miffed had I been there, my second thought was the protesters must have had tickets to get into the theatre , what a waste of money for them , they are the best part of £75.00 to £100 a ticket, did they buy their own or did stop oil HQ pay.

I think they should try targeting a Premier League or major international football match! They'll soon find out how popular their tactics are. Alienating the general public who they need to support their aims.

Missing a theatre performance is annoying.

Causing people to have wasted time on arrangements, money on tickets and . . . fossil fuels to get there isn’t actually going to achieve the public support they want, is it?

Continuing to use fossil fuels will be catastrophic.
Agreed
Most people have their heads in the sand,
evidence?

*Or is it just that they are already making an effort to reduce their own usage, but don’t know how to make the rest of the world do the same? Whilst at the same time acknowledging that people need jobs to earn money in order to survive which involves transport, heating, lighting, etc. and no one has come up with a way to solve that problem.
If the whole world stopped buying anything that needs transporting from elsewhere, using fossil fuels to do it, what would happen to the tea planters, the banana plantations, the grain farmers.

they need to make people listen.

Agreed-but don’t imply that no one except them is doing anything.

Doing it by travelling round using fossil fuels to promote their message which will be spread by the use of fossil fuels?

The government won’t do anything unless the public pressure is there.
What would you suggest they do?

What would YOU suggest they do?

Are you in denial about climate change or just don’t care?

Neither of those things, and if I had a better way without antagonising people, I’d be doing it.

What will your grandchildren think of you when it becomes irreversible?

What will your grandchildren think of you when it becomes irreversible?

They will do the same as we are doing now. They will blame everybody who went before them.

As often happens. Probably excused by “but I only . . . “

BeverleyJB Sun 08-Oct-23 12:41:21

A case of “Do as I say, not as I do”????????

NannyC1 Sun 08-Oct-23 12:32:35

I know how dare JSO do such terrible things. They won't change governments mind. Chaining themselves to railings, disrupting plays and sporting events. That kind of behaviour never did any good. I mean Women just went to parliament and simply asked for the Vote!

polnan Sun 08-Oct-23 11:55:19

well I just wonder how many of these protesters practice what they preach?

annifrance Sun 08-Oct-23 11:36:40

did anyone hear the interview between Roger Hallam and Nick Robinson on R4.?

dont know how NR kept a straightface/cool. complete nutter.

To be fair, if you don’t enjoy a good protest then most of Les Miserables will be lost on you.

Indeed 🤣

libra10 Sun 08-Oct-23 11:30:55

Why don't they protest outside the embassies of the world's greatest polluters?

China 30%
United States 15%
India 7%

The UK stands at around 1% or less, and as a nation, we (generally) prioritise environmental issues.

PollyMay Sun 08-Oct-23 11:27:24

Hasn’t their main sponsor (of JSO) just pulled out?

maddyone Sun 08-Oct-23 11:21:11

Nobody will listen whilst they continue to alienate and antagonise ordinary people who are powerless to change things anyway. They are people who don’t actually know how to engage with the public and get them on their side. In any case, the public will never be on the side of anyone who advocates making life both difficult and expensive. The scientists will solve this problem in time, but until then, JSO are simply punishing ordinary people with their disruptive and at times dangerous stunts. It’s called how to NOT win friends and influence people.

Let's hope they read this and learn something grin

Grantanow Thu 05-Oct-23 17:16:49

I think their stunts are counterproductive.

Mollygo Thu 05-Oct-23 12:13:39

Why on earth do they seem to want to alienate the general public? Wouldn't they be best protesting to politicians, oil companies, coal mines, etc.

Because that’s the only tactic they can dream up.
Their cause is good, but their actions don’t match.

rafichagran Thu 05-Oct-23 11:36:18

Just another stunt to alienate the public.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 05-Oct-23 11:21:23

Les Mis is all about protesting.

The people who paid for tickets, transport and in some cases overnight stays in London were pretty pissed off (first hand knowledge from a staff member on duty at the time)

Those at the disrupted performance will have their ticket money refunded, but they still have paid out on numerous sundries, some were tourists, some were there for a special night (anniversary, birthday etc)

Just Stop Oil have no idea how to win over hearts and minds however, they are flipping good at alienating themselves with the general public.

Mollygo Thu 05-Oct-23 10:16:27

The best bit was when they were arrested.

VioletSky Thu 05-Oct-23 00:54:54
