How about signing and sharing this petition:

'Call an immediate general election'

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/641904

Quokka Tue 10-Oct-23 10:57:35

Orreo you are probably correct that an online petition is unlikely to trigger an election, but saying ‘nor should it’ is your opinion and as such you should recognise that.

^I think you’ll find most British people hate savage dogs.^

So half a million have signed a petition asking for them NOT to be banned hmm

Remind me MaizieD since you like numbers, how many millions of British people does that leave?
Most people is just that, most people.

Oh well, we can but try.

But you know how the British love their savage dogs....

I think you’ll find most British people hate savage dogs.
I haven’t signed the petition, simply cos I don’t believe in people power ( in this instance) to bring down any government.
They were voted in for their term of office and will I expect be voted out next year.

Indeed that’s not how it works. Unlike the states who are completely stuck with their government for the full 4 years, our constitution provides the means, given certain circumstances, to have an election at other times. It is not set in stone.

I agree it isn’t set in stone, Sunak could have an election now if he wanted to. He won’t!😄
It won’t happen by a petition online, and nor should it.

We had General Elections in 2017 and 2019 while the Fixed Term Parliament Act was still in force. I'm puzzled as to why people are so adamant that a Parliamentary term has to be 5 years when we had two GEs within the 5 years since 2015...

Did they miss those?

Anyway, the FTPA has been repealed.

Signed, but depressed to see that there are more that twice as many signatures on a petition to stop the banning of the XL Bully angry. There really is no hope for this country. sad

But it is very true that I asked 6 weeks ago about the incredible cost of private dental treatment and I was very disillusioned with the potential cost of around £17k. So rather than blame the government, I decided to abandon that dental surgery! My new Nhs dentist is a breath of fresh air. So thanks Gnet for advice on switching.
I do care about education, transport, health provision and open spaces, clean air etc but my caring doesn’t provide it for you. I marvel at what is on my doorstep including the Green Flag parks and fast access to London. I can only assume that huge private investment in the area over the years has paid off. As mentioned, it has been a winning combination of LibDem council and Conservative MPs….., failed miserably under Labour.

The numbers signing the petition will be picked up by the press eventually. I signed when Maisie first flagged it. Thank you Maisie. With all that is pushing the day-to-day out of the news it seems to be reaching many who do want an election although Sunak will, of course, go on telling them he knows better.

I don't think it matters too much where ronib lives. I imagine the success in finding what they need is far more to do with how they live.

We have had the change to the same appointment system and it does indeed work well - for those of us with access to and the knowledge of how to use a smartphone, and those who have transport. Those who don't are feeling very disenfranchised. Of course, this government, or ronib perhaps, doesn't care about them although at my surgery they do try to help - but they cannot bring the buses back or, it appears, get away from the assumption thst everyone has a smartphone.

Well my corner has been around for a very long time and I understand your jealousy but that’s just life I guess folks.

Only 6 weeks ago, you started a thread on here about your trouble with NHS dentistry.

fancythat Mon 09-Oct-23 07:14:39

ronib I found my Nhs dentist through a friend…. not by looking online.

Do you think online is telling porkies?
We can all find an NHS detist through a friend? A dentist friend maybe? Or a doctor friend? Or an NHS friend?

Quokka but we can get gp appointments here in England under a new system that has been implemented and working well. Plus I found an excellent Nhs dentist who does have availability. It just took some initiative finding her. So why are you blaming politicians for the way local health services are run? My Mp isn’t involved in these services as far as I know.
The air quality has improved in recent years too. As for sewage I don’t know.
My grandson is receiving an excellent start in an outstanding early years nursery delivered by really caring staff. Again without any guidance from the local Mp.
The energy crisis is I agree something that needs addressing and I am pretty furious about it. But I don’t believe Starmer will halve my bill or bring it down to an affordable level. But he can try ….

Wow, Ronib I was about to ask you which corner of Utopia you live in, so that I can move there at once, but then I realised that if you posted that on GN it would immediately fill up to overflowing with older people from everywhere else in the country, so I didn't bother.

I think that ronib’s corner can be found under utopia if you look carefully 😄😄😄

Exactly!

Actually I’m lucky where I live as we too, in our sunny little part of rural England can still access these services.

I’m speaking for those I know who live (in England) and experienced a different reality. Air quality improving? Haha! Sewage? Really - you don’t know? Shocking.

And who mentioned MPs? Confused dot com me thinks dearly.

Still sounds like Utopia to me.

You’re in England? Or Scotland or Wales or NI?

I have to agree as I and my family have found the same.
Am not at all happy about the sewage and rivers situation tho.
Cracks about Utopia are silly, there are many regions where you’ll still get these things, it may well be a post code lottery situation.I live in England.

I don’t live in Utopia promise. I found my Nhs dentist through a friend…. not by looking online. I am also very surprised at the improvement in my local gp’s surgery through implementation of a new online system. All things are possible……we do have a LibDem run council and a Conservative MP for the time being. The roads are busy though.
Also fast access to London and acres of open space- yes plus good community feel in some areas …..

MaizieD Sun 08-Oct-23 11:53:41

However, it will be ignored just as all the Brexit petitions were signed etc.

I think those of us who have signed these 'government' petitions are inured to the fact that the government will ignore them grin

But, if it gets some publicity in the media it will show that Sunak's claim that people don't want a GE now is wrong.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 08-Oct-23 11:35:23

I have signed a few days ago when it was in22k i think, so good to see it zipping up.

However, it will be ignored just as all the Brexit petitions were signed etc.

I remember one reached millions and it made not a jot of difference.
But it will certainly prove Sunak wrong.

It is being suggested that we will all have to drag on until next autumn, as the spring will not give the Tories more points in the poll.

This chaos is going on for ever😡😡. It started after 2015 but in particular after 2016 and has never stopped.
