I don't understand how they find the money to pay the smugglers. I'm aware some are loans to the smugglers, but all of them?

I also don't understand why they risk their lives in a dinghy when Europe is some respects is better than the UK.

Many havn’t got the money, they agree to be indentured to the gang in the UK and are used as slaves in a whole range of illegal activities.

It’s been reported today that a Gambian man, who arrived in the UK illegally, and was dealing drugs in Edinburgh, and who was convicted of raping a woman at knife point, was not allowed to be deported because he might not be able to receive proper medical care in his own country.
As long as stories such as this continue to be reported, and similar stories are reported regularly, then the population will remain opposed to this situation where people from all over the world can arrive in the UK and be given the right to remain for spurious reasons. This needs to be tackled in my opinion. And in the opinion of many other people.

I used the figures posted earlier on this thread for Italy.
The numbers arriving in Italy are not necessarily the number who remain there.
Germany has accommodated the largest number.
And the fact remains in terms of numbers the UK is not swamped and has a relatively small problem compared with other much poorer countries. When you take into account that much of the unrest and problems arising in the countries people are fleeing from was caused by the actions of the US and the UK it is even more shocking. It's time the UK stopped denying responsibility and accepted that it should and could take more asylum seekers.

The refugees in Chad are living in squalid camps probably fed by UN or RC, not hotels in the UK, that would be pretty much the same in many countries bordering conflict regions

We should be addressing the countries that refugees are fleeing from, if there wasn’t persecution there would be no refugees. The UN or EU can do nothing it would take the UN to solve the strife in these countries, IF the will existed.

Countries in turmoil, famine in other countries.

While this carries on - and how many people give Syria a second thought now with all that is happening in Ukraine - people will flee. Most of them want to stay near their home country in the hope that one day they will be able to return and rebuild.

What is wrong with humankind that we can build pipelines across continents, under the sea, to transport oil and gas but not water to areas of drought?
How come Africa is a fertile, productive continent but people starve in some countries there?

Because of factions fighting, civil wars, conflict.

It is just depressing.

I would say it has a lot to do with Europe. The eu signed a deal with Turkey to the tune of €6 billion.

Lampedusa in Italy had 7,000 migrants arrive in on 14/09/23 the population of Lampedusa is 6,000.

So far this year Italy has seen the arrival of 127,000 migrants.

I’m pretty sure that any agreement with France or the EU will involve taking our “fair share”.
If an agreement on what our fair share is made it will be easier to control numbers, that could take some time to negotiate.

Perhaps if the UK took its fair share of asylum seekers it might help. Of the 27.1 million refugees in the world the UK took 1%
