Some much needed good news

Labour won the Rutherglen and Hamilton West seat with a huge 24% swing.

We can look forward to repeating this all over the country in the GE and get shot of this corrupt, lying, cheating and incompetent government.

It’s actually quite hard for the average person to debate politics well, you need certain skills that most of us simply don’t have.
So it’s easier for these people, who do not have the skills, to call the entire opposition ‘brain dead’ ( for example )
It’s ridiculous as most of us know, but that’s how it is. And I definitely see far more ridiculous, offensive, comments from the liberal/ left side of the political spectrum.

It’s like being back in the school playground - they might as well say ‘all Tory voters stink & eat worms’ whilst sticking their tongue out.

I wish there was a really good Labour person on here who could debate well, but I haven’t seen one yet tbh.

Despite their supposed piety and ‘rightness’ I have found the so called extreme left wingers to be every bit as intolerant and just as plain nasty as the right wingers. They also claim the high moral ground which is enough to make you barf. No extremists on either side are pleasant people, they are dangerous and best avoided.

It helps no- one to throw insults around whether they be quotes from someone else or not. Like it or not we have a two party electoral system in this country. On the whole people are in one side or the other. Though of course there are some in betweeners. If either side was so thoroughly rotten as they are made out to be then decent people wouldn’t vote for them. Most people in this country are decent and it may upset some to hear that most MPs yes even Tory ones want to do good. That is why they stand for election.

That’s very true GrannyRose15

I voted Labour nearly all my adult life but switched as I really felt uncomfortable about how the party was heading.

I have to say my local Conservative MP is really good. I have had 3 occasions when I needed his advice/help and he rings me at home within 48 hours usually unless he is working away. If that’s the case his Secretary rings me.

On local social media Labour supporters are absolutely foul to him and at any opportunity will try to belittle him when he works so hard to help his constituents. They post absolute lies about him which is really unfair.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 08-Oct-23 09:27:59

They have just shown him a word cloud about himself biggest word NOTHING 🤣

GrannyGravy13 Sun 08-Oct-23 09:26:12

Listening to Sir Starmer being interviewed by Victoria Derbyshire, the man is promoting unicorns, rainbows, pixies and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow 🤣

He has promised that NHS hospitals will
function at the weekends under Labour.
DH has had all his appointments including a biopsy on Sundays throughout September. Someone should tell him the NHS already works 7 days a week.

There are more holes in his plans than my kitchen colander…

Who is James O’Brien anyway? Never heard of him.

He's a presenter on LBC.

You'd hate him, Primrose53

Thanks for telling me who I will dislike. I don’t actually “hate” anybody. I leave that to your lot. 😉

But you’re being disrespectful in referring to ‘your lot’ Primrose53, do you not see that? There is no ‘your lot’, there is just a range of people with views across the political spectrum, and individuals across that spectrum express their individual views in their own style.

Individual views are fine but there is no need to be rude, offensive, nasty or sneery about other people and their beliefs. I am sure that people reading such comments are put off even considering voting Labour when they read such stuff.

This thread is “some much needed good news” about Labour’s recent win so it’s quite obvious that it’s mainly Labour supporters commenting. So, using the term “your lot” is not disrespectful. And nobody has yet attempted to answer my question about why Labour supporters always have to be so offensive.

That would be a district council, not a county council. A budget of that size for external lawyers 30 years ago was not inconsiderable. When I worked for a county council in the late 70s/early 80s the only use of external lawyers was the extremely occasional taking of counsel’s opinion. Otherwise absolutely everything was done in house,

County councils don’t deal with residential planning applications Dinahmo. Outside metropolitan boroughs, this is the responsibility of district councils. Local authority lawyers are not highly paid, as with most other public sector employees they are on pay scales. This doesn’t attract high calibre lawyers and my experience of working in a county council legal department is that they are very focused on working set hours rather than getting a job done. The money would be far better spent contracting work out to private practice, as is sometimes done, where the focus is on getting a job done quickly and efficiently.

Actually, the authority in question was East Hampshire which I believe is part of a county, but not the whole. The budget I referred to was that for using private practice lawyers and not the legal team.

It was a very low turnout. Less votes than not just in 2019 but less than in 2017 when Labour last won the seat.

Yes, 36% turnout I read somewhere.

Labour has doubled its westminster seats said the BBC .....it didn't say from ONE ...to TWO !

I did assume that was tongue-in-cheek as we all knew that, didn't we? If not why not!!

paddyann54 Sat 07-Oct-23 15:49:41

Here ,in Scotland ,councils are given money for housebuilding .IF its not used then its taken back and given to a local authority that has used its allocation as specified.
My area is awash with new homes .The SNP .I know you all believe they've been a disaster BUT contrary to what you may have heard have overseen the building of over 120 000 new homes over three quarters of which are local authority .Thats old figures ,last years isn't included yet LABOURS LAST YEAR IN POWER they built just 6 ...not 6k ...6 singular SIX!!
Heres another OLD figure .Labours* siesmic win * was actually by a lower number than they had in 2019 .When they had over 18k votes from a total of @68k .NOT quite as seismic as Starmer would like you to believe ...and thats WITH the tory vote going to them
Dont believe the lies from the unionist parties ,its all they can do to make you think its headed their way ,its not .Labour has doubled its westminster seats said the BBC .....it didn't say from ONE ...to TWO !

IMO developers can and should be required to contribute appropriate sums for the building of housing by local authorities and housing associations. They make handsome, often obscene, profits. But they would doubtless reflect the additional contribution in the price they pay for land. That doesn’t exactly make me weep - landowners receive eye watering sums for development land.

As from last year, councils can retain 100% of the proceeds of RTB sales. I guess that action by the government didn’t get a lot of publicity. But they will need more money in order to properly address the shortfall in affordable rental properties.

Yes I do remember that.

But I assume that Labour are talking about more money on top of that. I must read some more.

Primrose53 Sat 07-Oct-23 15:20:45

Taking this thread down is a good idea wwm2 but please don’t replace it with another nasty dig at people who don’t vote the same way as you.

Why DO the Left always have to use foul language or really offensive name calling? If I scan though stuff on here and see nasty stuff I just know it’s coming from the Left. It must come from their frustration but it’s not big or clever to show yourself up like that and I am sure a lot of people just stop reading.

So you will be pleased to know that I’ve persuaded HQ to take down the offending thread as well as the vapour comment.

They seem reluctant to take down threads which I must say surprised me as I thought it happens not frequently but certainly not unknown?

I asked for one of my own posts to be taken down the other day and then again because I was concerned about a link in it, but it was still there days later.

They asked me to give them reasons why I think it should be taken down. I wrote a small essay😄😄😄

I also said that I was very relaxed about whether they took it down or not, but felt on balance it is better not to offend.
