I thought he wanted to go to Barbados anyway and he still had a choice. I think we need to be really careful about taking choice away from people who are elderly or disabled because sometimes it’s the only thing they have control over iykwim

Daddima, your point is very valid!

Callistemon21 Sun 15-Oct-23 11:43:13

Good post, Daddima

Who on this thread has raised a tenth of that amount for NHS charities - or any charity?

I stand corrected - Barbados

Louella12 Sun 15-Oct-23 11:41:46

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

The public bought those books thinking at least some of the proceeds would be going to charitable causes. As Captain Tom stipulated in the prologue.

Had we known this was to build a spa pool for the seemingly wealthy relatives , I doubt many would have bought it

…the Bahamas.

Now the details make no difference, but it’s interesting how social media can distort stories. In this thread alone Captain Moore was reported to have gone to USA (then corrected to Bahamas), then Jamaica.

It was Barbados, a small detail, but just shows how misinformation spreads, also how so many people still believe the daughter took money from the donations sent in by the public. I’m not trying to excuse her behaviour, just find it interesting how social media can spread misinformation ( as well as the mainstrean media!)

If this is true, this woman should be ashamed of herself. She’s a disgrace. People gave their money in good faith.

JaneJudge Sun 15-Oct-23 08:35:53

I imagine they were quite financially secure before. The house is massive and in a very expensive area and the kids were at private school. The biggest lie you’ve been told is that they were salt of the earth types 😂

I also didnt need a hero thanks very much.

Louella12 Sat 14-Oct-23 22:09:57

If you can't see a problem then it's pointless explaining

freyja Sat 14-Oct-23 22:05:40

Really. I can't believe we can be so gullible. Like Florence Nightingale in the Crimean war, the government needed a hero to boast the nation's morale. They found one in Captain Tom, who bless him had decided to rise some money for the NHS by walking around his large but no hectare garden.

Did we honestly think a 100 year could operate let alone set up a facebook page to raise £39 million pounds all on his own whilst walking the garden. Do we think it was even on his radar to do so?

Captain Tom was seduced by the idea of raising money for the NHS and providing a secure financial security for his family. Who can blame him at a time of great uncertainty. Obviously the right amount was the carrot, as well as a bonus of a dream holiday in Jamaica, during lockdown and a knighthood by the queen , in person despite putting the 94 year old queen in great danger. Who could resist, you only live once.

The real question here is how much money did the newspaper and media make, with the government's approval. The people who set this fast up did not care for the NHS, the welfare of Captain Tom, his family not even the queen. They just made lots and lots of money.

So like Florence Nightingale who, when the war was over and dust settle, took to her bed for 8 years because her hospital was the dirtiest and had more deaths then any other. She then pulled herself together and set up the greatest nurse's training ever.

Once again, the dust has now settle, and we are happy to condemn Captain's Tom's family for enjoying financial security that he arranged. He did his bit the NHS, got them a lot more money then if he ever would by just walked around the garden on his own without media assistance.

So we got our hero, who we loved because of his efforts, the NHS got their money and Captain Tom's family are now financially secure. What is the problem?

Dud she not say it was from his book and he wanted them to have the profits??

In the prologue of one of these books he said he was thrilled to be given the chance to raise even more money for his charitable foundation .

These books were written in the last couple of years of his life. He would not have written them had it not been for his fame .

His daughter should not have pocketed all that money.

People bought that book thinking they were contributing towards the charity. They certainly didn't think they were paying for a spa pool.

Twig14 the charity commission keep a beady eye on charities to ensure that too much does not go on admiistration.

This link discusses the problem and is quite illuminating howcharitieswork.com/transparency-and-accountability/charitable-activity/

Money spent on administration is not 'wasted money. If a charity is to do what it is set up to do, then it needs to generate donations. if they sit around and wait for the money to come in - very little will, so some money is spent on fund-raising, if they are to organise and undertake the charitable work they are committed to they may well need to employ professional social workers or professional advisers.

Age UK gives a very interesting and detailed breakdown of its funding and activities www.ageuk.org.uk/about-us/what-we-do/how-we-raise-our-funds/

I think a lot of money given or left to charities pay for wages of staff in a lot of cases quite a lot of money. I give to various charities but now I give to my local hospice instead. Money corrupts

Is this the same daughter that was criticised for taking him to the USA on a plane when Covid was still lurking?

Maddiemo Sat 14-Oct-23 16:21:58

New here so just looking around, all looks very interesting and helpful. Just thought I would say hello. Maddie.

MaggsMcG Sat 14-Oct-23 16:01:03

I read somewhere that shecwas claiming it was from his books not the public donations. That he wanted the family to have that money. Still seems suspicious to me.

There is an article in today's Daily Telegraph, titled, 'The real tragedy of Sir Tom Moore' s wasted millions.' by Isabel Oakeshott.'
Basically saying that the funds could have been spent on lovely new cancer centres instead of trival projects. At Wrexham Hospital , part of the money went on replenishing tea, coffee and mineral water for nurses.
I think the trouble was the umbrella charity NHS Together decided to divide the money evenly between some 241 member organisations.

I didn’t read the article as I don’t subscribe, but I doubt if £38 million would build ‘lovely new cancer centres’, far less staff them and pay for their upkeep.

M0nica Sat 14-Oct-23 15:22:24

The fact that Captain Tom raised huge sums of money for the NHS is no justification for what his daughter walked off with.

I couldn't care whether he raised a billion £s for the NHS. This lady has walked off with nearly £1 million and while she was entitled to be paid as an employee of the charity, and I must say, I think the charity should have had an independent chief executive/chairman, there is at least £800,000 there that should have gone to the charity and could have done a lot of good.

Nannapat1 Sat 14-Oct-23 14:40:24

While it is true that she kept the money from his books, received a very high salary and applied for permission to build a swimming pool etc in the name of the Trust, a great deal of money was paid to NHS Charities Together, a group of some 250 charities. In the first wave, each charity received £35,000. In the second wave each received an amount which equated to £7 per person employed by the trusts that the charities supported. Most of those donations seem to be for projects which have gone towards benefitting the staff.

JaneJudge Sat 14-Oct-23 13:51:38

The other daughter lives abroad and was mentioned/appeared on tv but presumably has and had her own busy life whereas he lived with Hannah.

lemsip Sat 14-Oct-23 13:43:32

he lived in the home of hannah his daughter, why expect to hear about the other daughter? she has nothing to do with it for goodness sake!

I’m one of many people who felt the whole set up was exploitative and very distasteful.
His daughter quite honestly gave me the Cree, she sounded so insincere and grabbing from the start.
It doesn’t surprise me one bit that some of her dealings were suspicious.

Youngatheart51 Sat 14-Oct-23 13:26:08

Totally agree with Lesley60.
The other daughter never gets a mention. I for one would love to hear her thoughts on this situation.
