I don’t know full story but may watch tonight.

I have wondered though how the massive amount of money he raised was used in the NHS.

Aveline Thu 12-Oct-23 08:50:28

Oh no! How awful.

TerriBull Thu 12-Oct-23 09:02:12

She comes across as a bit grubby grabby and has tarnished his considerable efforts somewhat.

henetha Thu 12-Oct-23 09:11:36

What a sad thing after all Captain Tom's marvellous efforts.
If she is guilty, I hope she is thoroughly ashamed. But let's hope it might be a misunderstanding?

lemsip Thu 12-Oct-23 09:34:50

yes, I shall watch and see what I think. surely it can't be all bad if she's doing an interview.

she states in a clip that she was paid £18.000 fee to attend an awards ceremony and the charity was paid £2.000 of that.

Chestnut Thu 12-Oct-23 10:16:53

He interviews some interesting people in the news on Piers Morgan Uncensored so I record it anyway. That way I don't miss any of them.

Kandinsky Thu 12-Oct-23 10:20:18

Poor man, I always felt he was being exploited.

Jaxjacky Thu 12-Oct-23 10:33:22

This has been rumbling around for a while, a very greedy woman.

Dinahmo Thu 12-Oct-23 10:39:14

I think that she is saying that the £800k was from the sale of his books and that he'd wanted them to have that money. Her OH is saying that she's been ill. (Saw a preview this morning)

Different scenario from the title of the thread.

Louella12 Thu 12-Oct-23 11:16:26

Captain Sir Tom Moore's daughter has admitted keeping £800,000 from the three books he wrote before he died - despite the prologue of one of them saying the money would go to the charity in his name

So I think the OP was right.

She also was paid 18 grand to do a talk but only gave the charity 2 grand.

Her behaviour hasn't been great. But she certainly doesn't deserve death threats.

Louella12 Thu 12-Oct-23 11:21:06

Sorry lemsip, I'd not seen that you'd mentioned the 18k.

I'm surprised they've done this interview really . Piers Morgan won't have done this for their benefit.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 12-Oct-23 11:24:34

If Sir Tom left a will, it should be clear who was entitled to what monies.

As far as I know all of the money donated to his Foundation has/is being distributed to NHS charities as intended.

'as far as you know'?

well that's as far as we all know, that's why there's an investigation of course!

M0nica Thu 12-Oct-23 13:34:28

I doubt she will be ashamed, although I am sure she will go through all the motions in public, just cross she has been found out.

Nannarose Thu 12-Oct-23 13:41:29

You can go to the NHS charities website to see wht they do generally. The only Captain Tom mention is about the investigation.
Of course, this is upsetting. Already I have heard a few people using it as a 'reason' not to support charity fundraising.
I think (and would be interested if anyone knows otherwise) that the Charity Commission got on to her quite quickly.

Unfortunately this happens so often with what might be called "private" charities. Donors often prefer to give to a small local charity rather than the large ones such as Oxfam and Save the Children etc in the mistaken belief that the overheads are excessive, which they are not.

In 2022 SCF raised £294 million. Expenditure on charitable works was £251 million and fundraising costs was £31million.
If my calculator got it right the later was 10.54% of the total raised.

All the major charities publish financial reports which are relatively easy to follow.

The money was never intended for ‘the NHS’. It was for NHS Charities Together, which was set up to support staff, patients, aand communities, so that’s where the money he raised went.

Margiknot Thu 12-Oct-23 14:41:33

I think I read that there is a much needed garden for patients and staff to rest and relax in at a hospital in Bedfordshire that was funded from money raised by Captain Tom.

Yes it is

Captain Tom raised about £39 million to go towards NHS staff and charities; it was not intended that the money should go towards propping up the NHS.

The money from his books was in a separate fund.

What his daughter has done is foolish, if it was not specified where the revenue from the books was to go, but she and her children do not deserve death threats.

People who makes those kinds of threats are worse.

wildswan16 Thu 12-Oct-23 16:28:43

I think it is clear that mistakes have been made, and I hope they can be rectified.

However, I do wonder how each of us would have coped had our elderly father decided to raise such a massive amount of money. The legalities of it all must have been time consuming and complicated.

Nannarose Thu 12-Oct-23 16:36:24

It is always difficult - although IMHO asking for £18k for an appearance is quite ridiculous, and no wonder people are angry.

I think people like local charities becasue they think they can see where the money goes (and indeed that may be why the Moore-Ingrams were reported). But I agree it isn't always the case. And I have to say that there are a couple local to me that I think look like vanity projects.

Of course death threats are criminal.

lemsip Thu 12-Oct-23 19:05:24

the interview is on ' talk tv' at 8pm -9.30pm. talk tv is on 237 freeview or 217 freesat.
