I’ve always wondered why the other daughter is never mentioned or even seen when Capt Tom was alive

spabbygirl Sat 14-Oct-23 12:35:56

It's disgraceful, £18k for a few hours work! The charity commission might have their drawbacks, but at least they guard against this sort of thing

I also picked up the vibes from the family especially his daughter who seemed to always be in the frame and overly attentive. I am not surprised to hear about this. He was a lovely man who just wanted to help in his way. The holiday seemed inappropriate at the time.

the fact that Tom lived with his daughter in her large house with a very long 'garden path' meant that his walking up and down was going to become a business venture for his daughter who had the media knowhow for such a thing.

From what I saw of the interview, the issue seems to be mainly with the proceeds from the sale of the books, not the donations people sent to the fund to support the NHS Together charity, which is where all donations went. The daughter and her husband maintain that their father meant the money from the books to go to them. I did notice that the remarks attributed to him, by newspaper articles and in the foreword of one book, merely say book sales would ‘promote the launch’ of the Foundation, not that all proceeds would go to it. It was interesting that Captain Moore had an agent, and I wonder if they have maybe advised the family to put the book money into the family business, who knows?

While I’m sure his daughter did manage to profit from the Foundation ( she did say in the interview that she ‘did have to work for a living’), I think she’s now widely perceived as having actually taken (or ‘pocketed’) £800,000 of the cash donated by the public, and that will stay with her forever, in the same way that people still think the money was donated to the NHS.

Of course he did.
Wendy Holden was the ghost writer.
No secret about that.

He must have had a wealth and lifetime of experiences to relate.
I might buy them for DH.

M0nica Fri 13-Oct-23 20:03:25

I expect he dictated them to a ghost writer.

How did a man of 100 manage to write three books in a year or was it two?

I don't think it would be with a quill pen on parchment.

He probably had a wealth of stories.
We should all do that 🙂

Don't think they actually dragged him off!! Apparently he'd always wanted to go to the Bahamas and at his great age, he had rather run out of time. and so you could say that by fulfilling an old mans wishes,he at least died happy.

Yes, I agree!

Must add the Bahamas to my bucket list.

I never took to his daughter from the first moment she appeared with her father. I thought there was something false about her that I couldn't put my finger on. She obviously liked all the publicity and I too wondered why the other daughter was rarely mentioned. They dragged him off to the Bahamas which probably shortened his life too.

It was on his bucket list.

Must remember to tell the DC what's on mine (it's quite long);
they can spend their inheritance fulfilling my wishes.

BlueBelle Fri 13-Oct-23 14:58:40

Buffyfly I totally agree with your post I felt misgivings when I saw them all around him and didn’t take to the family at all and thought how foolhardy it was to take the old chap to the West Indies at his age and in the middle of a pandemic, even if he had said he’d like to go, absolutely ridiculous, didn’t he get Covid, he died very soon after didn’t he?
Wasn’t there a spa or indoor pool or something built with sone of the money ?

They did say that he wanted to go to Barbados - for the cricket.

I'm working away whilst listening to Piers Morgan interviewing the family and shouting at the screen. It's a long time since I've heard such b---s--t.

The responses that they have been giving. When I have a very quick excuse for something I've done my DH always says that I should have been a Tory politician. I thought the same about the couple.

Reference to the proceeds from the books being left in Captain Tom's will was made above. In fact they set up a company to receive the sales monies.

Letitbleed Fri 13-Oct-23 14:36:14

Don't forget the spa they are having built at their home, that I think was the starting.point for such intense media scrutiny.

Can you explain what you mean? I've only watched the first half, and everyone seems perfectly polite so far.

We continue to hear nothing about his second daughter.
I wonder how she features, if at all, in this unhappy saga. Does continuing reference to 'family' include her?

M0nica Fri 13-Oct-23 09:27:06

I can see no reason why having this much money coming into a charity should be an excuse for the family of the person bringing it in to redirect large sums from it into their own bank accounts for their own advantage. We are not talking about a couple of thousand to cover contentious expenses, or a preference for flying business class.

We are talking about tens and hundreds of thousands of pounds, which the world, in general, thought were going to charity being redirected into the family coffers.

Even if what Captain Tom's family did with a large sum of the money his actions geberated is not illegal or theft, it is still contemptible behaviour.

Piers is excellent at his job, I am watching it now and the two adults are squirming.
