A second thread to share our thoughts and prayers on this moving situation

Galaxy Fri 20-Oct-23 20:34:50

I am sure the person who posted it would be happy to explain it.
It was deleted for antisemitism.
I was then told by another poster (not you) that it was shocking the posts had been deleted and that there was nothing wrong with them.
Thank you for saying that growstuff.

The statement about Starmers wife was apparently fine though, as I said I will be referring to all the statements cheered on by people on this thread whenever mention of hate speech or unconscious bias is brought up.

I missed any such comment. If I'd have seen it, I would have commented.

Galaxy Fri 20-Oct-23 20:24:45

No I am sure you didnt.

growstuff Fri 20-Oct-23 20:24:24

I've just been reading this piece in the Guardian by Jonathan Freedland:

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/oct/20/benjamin-netanyahu-hamas-israel-prime-minister

I know there are posters who dismiss the Guardian, but Freedland is a practising Jew and knows what he's talking about.

I blame Sunak for many things, not being able to get hostages released from murderous terrorists is not one of them.

Sorry - did I say I blamed Sunak?

I missed the statement about Starmer’s wife or I’d have responded.
I hear comments dismissing Starmer , who shouldn’t be Labour leader because he’s a zionist married to a Jew.
This is from people in the Labour Party.
Corbyn supporters.
I wish they’d clear off and start their own socialist party

Hear hear!!
It is very clear that that are too extreme and most of the populace want mainstream, common sense politics.

Biden has been busy - he has secured the release of 2 American hostages.

Any news how Sunak is doing? I believe that there are some British hostages.

I hope Biden can also urge the Israelis to release the convoy.

It brings me no pleasure to note that the IDF’s account of the bombing of the hospital being a stray rocket from the PIJ is being seriously questioned.

It makes no difference. People are still dead and maimed - evil has no face.

I wish people would try to understand the complexity of this issue instead of trying to polarise it.
Anyway, today's Radio 4, "Understand, Israel and the Palestinians" looked at Israel, the US and Iran. Really worth listening to and explains why the position of different Arab states is "different". The scary bit is nuclear. I doubtmany will bother to give 15 minutes of their time to listen but they should!

It is on my to do list. Anything that helps understanding and stops polarisation has got to be good.

www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jun/09/193bn-of-fossil-fuels-imported-by-uk-from-authoritarian-states-in-year-since-ukraine-war

Whoops senior moment, it was 193 billion not 19.3 billion.

I didnt press on the link. Assumed it was to do with your second paragraph.

The Guardian does say 19.3 bn.
Spread around different coutries in the Middle East.

Though I take your point that oil price and supply could end up getting disrupted.

*We imported £19.3b from Arab states,*

19 bill of what?

to put into perspective, education budget uk is 107 bn per year.
Nhs costs 187 bn.

Sorry thought it was obvious,Fossil fuels, I did post a link but perhaps you didn't see it. However as I'm sure you are aware any disruption of oil supplies etc affects the world wide price of a barrel of oil, so war in the area is a problem for everyone.

I saw it reported yesterday that Israel targeted the house of one of the leaders/commanders of Hamas, his name is Ayman Nofaland. They sent in a missile which completely destroyed his house and killed him, and presumably anyone else in the house.

Hamas is claiming that act was barbaric

Now, that is what you could term irony.

Sunak’s diplomatic skills need a lot of work!

My goodness please someone bring him back before he makes any further gaffs.

I must admit we were cringing 😬

Sorry,
Ayman Nofal

Let's be clear about what Israel's aims are as far as Palestinians are concerned, they want them gone. They are prepared to behave in ways which contravene human rights in order to achieve their aim. They don't particularly care if they immigrate, are killed or just reduced to such levels of poverty that just existing is difficult, as long as their numbers
are reduced.

The statement about the letter from the Paediatricians is disgusting hate speech

Oh dear, I despair when I see comments like these. The comments about the paediatricians are not hate speech, they are comments from perfectly ordinary grans on a discussion forum. We are discussing a very difficult situation.

It is probably true that the Israelis would like the Palestinians ‘gone’ after the terror attack last week, however Hamas and probably many other supporters of Hamas, have as a declared intent, the ridding of every Jew in Israel. Let’s try to not be one sided.

Definition of hate speech- abusive or threatening speech or writing that expresses prejudice on the basis of ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or similar grounds.
The statement is abusive to those paediatricians. It not only designates their religious beliefs simply because of their names, but it says they are expressing prejudiced views, because of a religious belief they may not even subscribe to. It denigrates Muslims.

If you read the Amnesty international report the actions Israel has been taking since 1948 have been with the intention that Palestinians will leave or suffer or die.

I posted the current (2017) views of Hamas. Not all members of Hamas think as you have stated. Just as not all Israelis agree with the actions of the Israeli government.

Read the link I gave to what happens to Palestinian women when Israeli soldiers decide to search their houses. Then work out what is behind these acts which are acts of retribution. Horrific yes, but how much more horrific is it to know that the soldiers of an occupying army behave in such a manner and the incidents are not reported, that it never even makes the news because it is simply an everyday occurrence.

An act of retribution you say. In that case you understand that Israel is undertaking its own act of retribution at present.

It wouldn’t do to have such egregious double standards would it?

Katie59 Fri 20-Oct-23 10:28:17

There is an Editorial in the FT today where former army commanders speculate what Israel will do next. Because of the difficulty of an urban invasion they are not expecting that to happen the casualty rate will be too high.
Most likely Israel will continue to destroy anything it can identify as a Hamas target for as long as it takes, the Palestinian casualty rate will be very high because Hamas will use them as human shields

There’s getting to be some stupid wokery now on this thread.
There was nothing wrong with what Sunak said when in Israel, unless a person prefers that Hamas comes out on top.
You can say that Biden makes gaffes, which he does now and then, but not Sunak.Johnson would have tho, you can bet your boots on it.

Oh dear there is that term “wokery” being used, when not understanding the arguments.
