Just that.

Didn't the Reform party split the Conservative vote as well?

JaneJudge Sun 22-Oct-23 14:17:43

I think people in mid Bedfordshire were shocked labour have got in. I suspect the low turn out was due to die hard conservatives not wanting to vote for labour but not being able to bring themselves to vote conservative either.

Conservatives have held the seat since 1931
They generally win by a 20k majority
Lib Dems did stand and got a couple of thousand under the conservative vote

It IS remarkable. To deny it shows a lack of understanding about the area and voting history

Casdon well when I was mourning the sudden death of my brother, I was beyond declaring anything at all in advance so raw was my grief.
Politicians are people too.

Yaye!

Dinahmo well my guess is that Jeremy Hunt is probably mourning the death of his brother …. But that doesn’t fit the narrative does it?

Have you ever known anybody to declare in advance that they were intending to leave their job because they were mourning the death of their brother though?
If he decides to devote the rest of his working life to raising money for cancer charities that would be great, I’m sure we’d all be behind his efforts in that direction.

Isn't it interesting that this is not being reported on the news at regular intervals Whitewave.

I wish Wwmk2 would give us more detail. I can't find anything about a minister resigning over fraud.

Me too, I've searched using every variation I can think of, and Lord Agnew is the only one that comes up, but that's going on for two years ago, not current at all. Certainly not from Sunak's time.

ronib Sun 22-Oct-23 12:46:02

MaizieD why would anyone want to win the next election?
JRM still missing the BJ bounce?

The interesting thing DAR is that JRM sees the Tories losing the GE

Are there any tory MPs left who think that they can win the next GE?

Jeremy Hunt has probably had enough and has a family to consider, is quite wealthy and has had cancer in the past. I think he has done what he could in difficult circumstances so maybe a vote of thanks for service?

According to "senior conservatives" he doesn't want to face a Portillo Moment.

spabbygirl Sun 22-Oct-23 12:13:47

I should think so too, this gov't has been horrendous for ordinary people, the NHS is on its knees cos Tories want us to go private to help them lower taxes for billionaires, schools are falling down, immigration is inhumane & out of control, there isn't a public service which has improved after 13 yrs of Tory rule, I can't wait to vote them out

Susieq62 Sun 22-Oct-23 12:09:30

There will be somebody who appeals . Read the manifesto of each candidate . Vote tactically just flipping vote !!!!

25Avalon Sun 22-Oct-23 11:47:18

Susieq62 but what if you don’t like any of the parties or their candidates?

Seagull72 Sun 22-Oct-23 11:46:54

Fingers crossed and not tempting fate.

Susieq62 Sun 22-Oct-23 11:42:24

There is being disillusioned with politics but there is also a democratic responsibility to use your vote. I get rather angry when I hear “ I probably won’t vote in the next election” . It is possibly the only time you can make a difference.
My future daughter in law said she voted UKIP because her fiancé told her to. This is a 30 year old with a first class honours degree in business ! I was apocalyptic! My feminist head almost exploded not because of who she voted for but why she voted for that candidate
Come on ladies stand up and be counted! We can and should make a difference!

madeleine45 Sun 22-Oct-23 11:29:56

With all the technology there is available it should be simple to have a video of each candidate , speaking about what they intend to do when they are electioneering. so you could just bring this up whenever they then come up with more lies etc and they would have to acknowledge exactly what they had said and now different is what they have done!!!! There are lies, damn lies, and politicians!!

Interesting article by Jacob Rees Mogg in the DM. He for one seems to realise the Tories are looking in the face of defeat for the GE. He comments how Starmer is putting on a conservative cloak. The hand of Tony Blair is at work.

Neither of which is true Avalon. But then it is the DM.

I wonder if we should be on resignation watch for rapidly fleeing MPs.

Lord Goldsmith ( Zac) resigned this Summer, but that was about environment issues I think.

MaizieD Sun 22-Oct-23 08:09:37

Have you got the right lord, Wwmk2?. Lord Agnew resigned from Johnson's government because of fraud in Jan 2022.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 22-Oct-23 06:39:12

I note that Lord Agnew has resigned from his post overseeing fraud in Sunak’s government.

He has left because of what he has found as a result of investigating the governments. Covid business payments. He stated that there is gross fraud and Sunak’s failure (refusal) to deal with it.

To do so would highlight Sunak’s total incompetence.
