Lies; Liz Truss; cronyism; partygate; wallpaper; unelected prime ministers; record taxation ; ruined public services; strikes; inflation; bodged Brexit; HS2; any other reasons for not voting conservative?
There were undoubtedly some Conservative voters who stayed at home, but the swing to Labour was huge in both constituencies. So no , ronib, by no means "totally expected". It is great news.
Mamie you are forgetting that the two former Conservative MPs in both seats were very undeserving of their office. Not at all unexpected in the circumstances.
36 and 44 percent turnout By-elections A majority of 1000 ish votes in both seats LibDems not in the race Totally expected?
Excellent results for Labour. I don’t think so ronib. According to the BBC ‘Meanwhile, there are disturbing echoes for the Conservatives in the results of by-elections in the 1992-7 parliament, at the end of which the party crashed to defeat. In the last three years of that parliament there were four by-elections in which there was a swing of more than 20% from Conservative to Labour. Now we have had three such swings in just three months.’ The writing is on the wall.
Casdon the writing is always on the wall. What does it say? A fairly low turnout - guess more than a third of voters will turn out for the GE? Strange thing democracy.

But if history tells us that when similar results in by elections have accurately predicted the future before ronib are you predicting that this time it will be different, and if so why do you think that?
There was no big increase in the Labour vote and Conservatives stayed away in droves - forgot to mention.
The swing was 23.9% to Labour in Tamworth, which is considerably above the 18% average UK swing predicted by recent polls. In Mid Bedfordshire the vote was split between Labour and the Lib Dem’s, as predicted, but the swing to Labour was still 12.4%. And the Tories were over 28% down on the 2019 election.
George Osborne said that it is Armageddon for the Tories.
On the other hand a Tory mp Andrew Bowden announced that this should be seen as mid-term aberration and that the voter was still broadly in agreement with Tory policies😄😄
