Should any marches around or near the Cenotaph this weekend not be allowed?

Following the defacing of a Cenotaph in Rotherham yesterday, would it be advisable for the police to rule that marches in or around the area of the Cenotaph should not be allowed, this weekend only?
A poppy seller was attacked by people in a huge crowd this week, people who have been marching on previous weekends have committed hate crimes by calling for Jews to be eliminated. Should the sanctity of the Cenotaph and the Remembrance Service be at the mercy of the marchers to choose to do the right thing? Why was a Cenotaph thought to be a legitimate target in Rotherham?
Surely those who live in our liberal democracy should understand why this weekend is particularly special to so many people. Those of us who live in this country, a liberal democracy, should understand that compared to so many people in the world, we are very lucky to live in a country that affords us great freedoms, including the right to protest peacefully. Peaceful protest however, does not include the right to call for the deaths of other people, to attack poppy sellers or others, or to deface public buildings.
Why are the London police refusing to use the laws that are already available to ban any marching around this area for for this one weekend?

So, no evidence at all of a 'silent majority' supporting Braverman?

I'm relieved...

MayBee70 Mon 13-Nov-23 08:45:52

How many times has she been sacked, now?

Whitewavemark2 Mon 13-Nov-23 08:45:49

Oh possibly James Cleverly -

Joseann Mon 13-Nov-23 08:45:33

It will all kick off now.

varian Mon 13-Nov-23 08:44:52

Suella Braverman sacked

ronib Mon 13-Nov-23 08:44:34

A mistake and it won’t save Sunak.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 13-Nov-23 08:41:16

My betting is on yet another right wing horror

Badenoch!

westendgirl Mon 13-Nov-23 08:40:30

Thank goodness Braverman has been sacked.

lixy Mon 13-Nov-23 08:39:14

I had a hunch in the middle of the night that a reshuffle will include Ms Braverman becoming deputy PM - on the 'keep your friends close and your enemies closer' principle.
At least the deputy PM doesn't have a department to ruin!

Vintagewhine Mon 13-Nov-23 08:36:47

She has been sacked!

Iam64 Mon 13-Nov-23 08:35:24

Thanks Casdon. She really isn’t fit to be Home Secretary. The policy decisions of the Met Police worked reasonably well despite her attempts to undermine the police and stir up right wing thugs
Of course I don’t defend the anti semitic banners or chants on the Palestine march but this huge march was largely peaceful. It’s striking that the march had all age groups and ethnicities. In contrast the extreme right wing bigots were mostly white men who had been drinking heavily

Casdon Mon 13-Nov-23 08:27:41

If you go on the YouGov poll and click the politics bar, she is supported by 7% of Labour voters and 11% of Lib Dem’s - so no, she doesn’t have wide political support outside the Tory party,

ronib Mon 13-Nov-23 08:14:22

growstuff there is support for SB , how much is anyone’s guess.
Can’t believe that anyone else is there waiting to replace her. Probably another media manufactured spat. Of course getting behind government ministers isn’t exactly in the British psyche. Definitely not part of Britishness!

Definitely don’t trust yougov

How can you not trust YouGov ronib, anybody can take part in polls, and it’s not just a UK platform, it operates widely across the world ? At worst it is over representative of older people because we have more time to participate, but a lot of the polls have age breakdowns so even that is a questionable criticism?

growstuff just shows that it’s not only Conservative voters who support SB btw.
Truth doesn’t figure in politics if it ever did.

Eh? How do you work that one out?

It seems you just can't trust polls.

Nigel Farage suggests that the majority of voters are behind SB.
A long time until the General Election so all water under the bridge by then…..

Oh well! If Farage claims something, it must be true! hmm

I dont care if he was walking there in order to perform a one man show of Strictly Come Dancing to be honest. It makes me very uncomfortable the way people talk about it. I suppose its reminiscent of why was she walking there, dressed like that, etc.
There was a similar poll in the telegraph growstuff but of course that too is aimed at a particular section of the population, I am just wary of thinking that the loud voices are the majority, they often tend not to be.

I haven't a clue how many people approve of Braverman, but it does seem to me that a poll of Conservative voters might not be representative of the population as a whole.

Galaxy no other high profile politician felt the need to go out for a walk in the middle of a huge demonstration.
The left wing press is loudly against SB so best discount anything written there too.

He does seem to be very unlucky. Apparently the same thing happened when he tried to walk through a group of anti-vaxx protesters and, before that, some anti-Brexiters. Fortunately, press photographers were there to capture the moments. It's weird really because I would have thought he would have had an official car for these trips.

Maizie D snap poll in DT around three quarters of survey in favour of SB. Conservative Home article by Paul Goodman - supporting SB.
Nadine Dorries wrote wondering if Gove was drunk when he ventured out to Victoria station on Saturday - so why would Gove inflame tensions by walking out? He’s a controversial figure and has shown yet more poor judgment. Or was he desperate to have the photo opportunity?

Which one is Nadine? The pot or the kettle?

The poll I saw was 78% in support of braverman, now polls can be unreliable but it's very dangerous to think that the louder voices in the media etc reflect public opinion. As has been shown quite comprehensively in recent years it is often not the case.
Oh and politicians should be able to walk wherever they like.

The headline I saw was over 72% of Conservative voters.
