A wise move? Or will he come to regret it?

If he agrees to the base being used, he could very well find himself toast at the next election.

Very definitely. The result of a High Court challenge to the proposal is currently awaited.

The Rwanda policy was purely performative. It would do nothing at all to mitigate the backlog. Or to stop the boats.

She was prevented from doing what she wanted to achieve by her Rwanda policy being challenged in court.

Yes - not sure if your point.

Response to MayBee.

Interesting that the main four cabinet posts are now all held by men. Why not Penny Mordaunt? I'm pleased SB has gone. To have no women in the Big Four Cabinet posts is frowned on these days. We must assume no woman in the Conservative Parliamentary Party is considered worthy - or too dangerous.
As to DC going to Lords. It is again considered not 'Parliamentary etiquette' to elevate a past PM before the ones who went before that PM. Neither Blair or Brown took up the usual elevation which is why DC/TM/LT/BJ couldn't/didn't. Presumably the flood gates have now opened.
Just call an election Rishi and put us all out of our misery.

It will be interesting to see what Cleverley does about asylum seeker accommodation in Wethersfield. The former RAF base is in his constituency and he's been lobbying the Home Office against the plans.

She's also spent a shed load of money on things that haven't happened instead of spending it on making the Home office more efficient at processing asylum seekers. There is a huge backlog of claims, which if dealt with would have seen those without a claim being sent home.

Whether you liked Braverman or loathed her, she was the only home secretary to ever seriously attempt to get some control of the immigration problem. She was adamant that Britain was no longer to be seen as a soft touch and that immigrants could not just arrive in the country illegally and expect to receive first class accommodation and full financial support. She did what every other home secretary promised to do but never actually did.

I agree scat.

She didn’t do anything. She just talked the talk. What did she actually achieve?

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 13-Nov-23 10:57:38

Exactly. Not dodgy dealings at all - Labour did the same with Mandelson. It’s obvious that Cameron’s peerage had already been arranged and signed off by the King when he stepped out of the car in Downing St this morning. Sunak has been arranging this for a while - no knee jerk reaction.

No one voted for Sunak to be PM although his constituents did vote for him to be their MP, but Cameron is not even an MP no one has voted for him but there he is the new foreign secretary. Dodgy dealings indeed.

A commentator on the radio this morning explained that members of the House of Lords are not allowed to enter the House of Commons. This would mean that if David Cameron is made a Lord he will not be scrutinised by our elected members of the House of Commons. Smart move by our Prime Minister?

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 13-Nov-23 10:50:31

So do I.

So we have the prospect of an exPM returning, who was responsible for the whole disastrous austerity, and most of all the Brexit debacle.

Unbelievable. After Brexit which he instigated he skipped away humming to himself. He didn't see it through and left the country in turmoil. Cowardly IMO. Rewarded with a seat in the Lord's. Does that mean he can't be questioned in the Commons.

It truly beggars belief..

Perhaps her political life is finished after all. I doubt it.

Braverman cooked her goose when she did not alter her article for the Times when she had been told to by no 10.
Interesting bit Iread in the Sunday Times yesterday that the far right would not make Braverman leader but Farage.
Perhaps her political life is finished after all.

Honestly how desperate can you get?
I suppose the fact that it isn't Gove is the only positive.
But bringing back a man who walked away from government and left a mess behind him is a bit much.
It doesn't say much for the quality of all the Conservative MPs that there isn't one good enough to do the job.

foxie48 Mon 13-Nov-23 10:34:32

CvD66I agree. Bad decisions are made when bad people appeal to the worst instincts in people and I think SB has demonstrated this very well. At times she has made me feel ashamed of being British. She has never "spoken" for me. I've yet to find anyone, even among my friends who are true blue Tory and I have a few, that find her comments anything other than disgusting. It makes me realise how lucky I am in my friends and family.

Ladyleftfieldlover Mon 13-Nov-23 10:32:55

I’m glad Braverman has gone. An absolutely appalling woman with no heart. Cameron will have to be ennobled. But why him anyway? He was the main cause of most of this country’s problems. The Tories seem to be in free fall. Madness. Bring on the GE pdq.

Cabowich Mon 13-Nov-23 10:27:40

The rumour I heard about it being Gove was way off the mark, then.

Casdon Mon 13-Nov-23 10:26:04

ronib

Casdon why they will be? Surely they ARE? Can’t get much worse?

It could. Six PMs in thirteen years, and five in post within four years! I actually think that Sunak is making the best fist of it he can in the circumstances he inherited. Braverman wouldn’t be elected as leader by her fellow MPs, and if she gets the role I could see there being a shed full of MP resignations. I just can’t see it happening.
