He needed to distance himself from the extreme right and run a more centralised government. Hence Cameron’s reappearance. He also expected this would establish the idea of a serious, more experienced government after the shenanigans of the last three years.

So just to recap, our unelected head of state, has given a position in Britain's unelected House of Lords to an unelected Foreign Secretary, on the recommendation of an unelected Prime Minister.

Last week I was thinking how much quieter and under the radar politics was and so unlike the way previous prime ministers had conducted business. Today I think Sunak clearly wants to stay in number 10 so the fight is back on. Still anybody’s guess as to outcome.

Cameron was a liability in the Lebanon. His track record abroad is abysmal.

Cameron’s misjudgement has led the U.K. to become an international basket case and now he’s foreign secretary. It would be funny if it wasn’t serious.

Don't all PMs eventually get offered a peerage? As Blair was the last one offered and declined, Cameron would have been next to be offered one (unless he had been and declined until today). Quite a few have declined recently. Boris must be champing at the bit for his. Truss.....!

Gernanshepherdsmum I would argue that Cameron’s trashing of the country goes back much further than the Brexit referendum. He introduced austerity which was a way for the government to convince the electorate that public spending should be cut - an unnecessary action that began the decimation of public services. Then he called the Brexit referendum to quiet the Euro sceptics in his own party. The electorate was not calling for an in/out referendum on the EU. Cameron knew the risks for the country if the outcome was to leave - yet he put his own political career ahead of the good of the country. Also, his past record on foreign policy is hardly glowing. I loathe him!

I would argue that the referendum wasn't a deliberate trashing of the country by Cameron, it was a misjudgment of the mood of the country. It was a huge shock to Cameron when the country voted to leave, he thought it would be a resounding vote to stay and confirm our future in the EU.

It was Johnson who put the kybosh on all that.

Agreed Iam64! Then of course, there was his infamous ‘cut the green crap’!!! Without that, millions more homes would have been properly insulated, and this country would have now been much more energy self sufficient. As the former PM he did untold damage to this country and look how he’s been rewarded. Once again, we see the Conservatives putting their own interests ahead of the country. I have to say, even with all the cr** that has happened in politics over the last few years, I have rarely been as angry as I am today at Cameron’s return, and the sneaky, secretive, undemocratic way it’s been implemented! Far from being ‘the cavalry’ to save the Tory’s skin, this looks like the desperate act of a floundering government. For Gods sake, put the country, and democracy, first - give us a General Election!

All I could say is - Strewth! What a dog’s breakfast.

From tonight’s TRIP Alastair seems to think Rwanda is going to get the go ahead. I hope he’s wrong although it will be interesting to see the backlash against it if it does.

This ! Austerity is a key part of his legacy. One of his particularly Bullingdon Boy contributions was the closure of Sure Start Family Centres. He said they weren’t being used by ‘the kind of people who need them but by families like his own”. Come to Blackburn, Burnley, Bolton, Accrington (and many more) so many of us shouted. He was mp for Witney, a market town in Oxfordshire. A very different demographic about which either he didn’t know or didn’t care.
