What is antisemitism?

I think I was trying, (clumsily), to ask myself earlier whether a different kind of anti semitism is now currently evolving with Netanyahu and Israel?
Growstuff asked in a previous post whether hiding one's identity as a Jew was out of fear. I thought about this, and for me as a young person, yes, it was a fear, not of violence, but of being unpopular. No one wanted to miss out on things due to being an "unequal" and ostracised member of school, or society, etc. because anti semitism was always there in a subtle way.
Now, I was kind of wondering whether that insiduous anti semitism has been replaced by a different anti semitism which is defined as opposition to Netanyahu personally? And that that might be far more dangerous in view of what might happen.
My thinking is muddled, but just commenting anyway on what I see happening. In an ideal world any form of hate would be unacceptable whatever.

I'm inclined to agree with Maddyone and Galaxy, it's almost as if anti semetism is an inevitable by product of Netanyahu's Israel, why would so many high profile Jewish individuals say so, and attest as in David Baddiel's book, "Jews Don't Count" that it is the one form of racism that isn't taken seriously. In some ways I find it hard to know why the OP was posed, to not know that anti semetism exists and that culminated in the murder of 6,000,000 of the people of that ethnicity and religion well you must have been living under a stone!

If yiu mean dividing society, then look to the UK and USA, divided to political extremes. Our government doesn’t represent me. That doesn’t stop me being English

The trouble is though, once he is out, the hostility and hatred towards Jewish people the world over still won't go away.

The issue of ‘looking’ jewish is irrelevant really. The remaining survivors of the kinder transport feel frightened. A close friend who is nit orthodox but follows his faith told me last week ‘it feels like the holocaust’. He’s the last person I’d see as over dramatising. He said the survivors and others, talk about the rise of anti semitism in Europe and see Israel as where they should be -without Netanyahu

Did they show what exactly was indeed the boxes labelled "medical supplies"? Was there any fuel to run the equipment?

Bottled water was definitely visible, even without my glasses.

I heard the fuel was only enough to run fir half hour …..as fir medicine food and water I saw soldiers carrying stuff but there are over 2000 people together with patients and medics so a few bottles of water won’t make any difference in the scheme of things.

Basically we only know what we are told and what we hear is not always the whole truth. I do try to hear both sides but my heart is with those with nothing.

Hamas has said to want a ceasefire and exchange of hostages for Palistinian woman and children held in Israel military prisons for a long time. Israel won't do that. The attacks of 7th October lets Israel comit ethnic cleansing. You don't carpet bomb indiscriminately war crimes. There has to be a better strategy. The only way to stop this human catastrophe is to stop the occupation free hostages ceasefire

We have a week's timeshare down in Bournemouth where there is a quite sizeable Jewish community, and on a Saturday they are quite visible going to and fro to the synagogue, some are clearly identifiable as Orthodox. Several years ago, and I can't remember what precipitated it, but some skirmish between Israelis and Palestinians had taken place, there were quite a number of cars driving around the town waving the Palestinian flag accompanied by vocal anti Jewish shouting and abuse from those in the cars. Having witnessed it at the time, I could only conclude it was a blatant display of anti semitism Always! always! by some factions,the Jews per se are conflated with the negativity of whatever the government of Israel happens to be doing.

growstuff are you saying that to feel frightened and/or intimidated for being Jewish you have to look like a Jew?

The question about whether people are identifiably Jewish has been asked on several occasions recently. There was the suggestion that the hair and dress of some orthodox Jewish men and women resulted in them being subject to anti semitism.
Most cities have areas where Jews escaping pogroms in Europe lived in the 19th/early 20th century. Manchester has the second largest Jewish community in the UK. Early, often poverty stricken Jewish people lived in slums alongside Irish families in Angel Meadow. As they became established many Irish families moved to south Manchester, the Jewish families to north Manchester.
There is still a substantial Jewish community in Cheetham Hill. There have been attacks in synagogues, schools, cemeteries and community buildings. My Jewish friends in the area aren’t orthodox and they’re anxious about the increase in anti semitism.

I agree with you about Orthodox communities. However, not all Jews (even practising ones) are Orthodox and they're not recognisably Jewish, so I'm genuinely curious about how people identify them.

My best friend at school was Jewish and I didn't even know until I went to her house and saw a Menorah on the mantlepiece and asked what it was. I hadn't even noticed that she didn't eat pork if it was served for school lunch.

Cambridge has a thriving Reform synagogue. If I happen to be walking past when there's some kind of service, I've seen men with kippahs, but I've rarely seen them being worn in the street.
