Yes. I think it was to make them more saleable at the time. I’ve seen some very tubby event and showjumping riders over the years but, when I think about it, like most sports, the people taking part seem to be leaner and fitter these days.
There has been an attempt to bring maximum weight of riders in, mainly aimed at showing but not exclusively. I still see riders who are too heavy for their horses/ponies, which of course is a welfare issue but I rarely see it amongst competitive riders in other disciplines, especially not eventing when horses are usually super fit and so are the riders! Horses that are too fat is also a welfare issue, especially in showing when people try to bulk up a horse with fat rather than muscle.
