Just seen this on BBC news.

Sorry to hear that. My news feed just says more information will follow.

He had cancer, it seems, I was startled by the news, and shocked that the death of the Pogues singer seemed to be given more importance.

That's a shame, I thought he was a pretty good Chancellor, certainly better than "10 jobs" It's been a day for high profile deaths, Shane McGowan, Henry Kissinger he was a 100! and last but not least Jimmy Corkhill, of Brookside fame, or the actor who played him so well sad

TerriBull Thu 30-Nov-23 13:27:00

The actor Dean Sullivan should have named him aka Jimmy Corkhill

Alistair Darling did a very good job, steering us through the 2008 crisis. RIP, a very nice man

Sad to hear of the death of Alistair Darling. Seventy is no age these days.
May he rest in peace. Condolences to his family and friends

I am sorry to hear that. We are very short on decent statespeople. He was one.

I wonder what you were watching? That certainly wasn't true on BBC2. The news was announced on Politics Live and the rest of the programme was about Alistair Darling. It seemed to be very unexpected, whereas Shane MacGowan was in hospital last week I think so there had been time for them to put something together.

I imagine there will be more as the day goes on.

BBC lunchtime news said that he had cancer.

Urmstongran Thu 30-Nov-23 14:19:27

A true and genuine politician. Saw the signs early of the global financial crisis and took vital decisive action to save Britain from further damage. RIP Lord Darling. A man of gravitas and honour indeed.

Anniebach Thu 30-Nov-23 14:40:35

A fitting tribute Urms.

I have to say that I agree with your analysis, UG. He never got the credit he deserved for making a major contribution to saving the UK from economic disaster.

RIP

Well said, Urmstongran.

I was surprised and sorry to hear the news.

Would it be frivolous to say he always fascinated me with his silver hair and dark eyebrows? Such a striking-looking man.

RIP Lord Darling
