I can't begin to summarise this article grin

Urmstongran

There’s a lot of intellectual snobbery already showing on this thread.

‘Johnson’ (never Boris, couldn’t possibly)
Farage
The Daily Mail.

But as you all realise, popular opinion will count on the day of a GE. Sadly (for some of you) an IQ test doesn’t have to be taken prior entering the polling booth.

For what its worth I don’t think NF will switch to the Tories. He wants to support Trump next year in the USA for his presidential challenge and I believe he also enjoys his 4 nightly platform on GBNews and that would have to stop.

No it’s not going to happen.

And Boris? He got some things wrong (not Ukraine) but because of that he’s toxic now with some voters. Those who didn’t vote for Brexit. And those who vilify him over his pandemic decisions. I think his ship has sailed.

Anyway I’m voting Reform next time. Thanks for that character assassination WWmk2. I didn’t know I was a ‘weirdo’
😁

Finally, the mention of Trump upthread. Let’s also mention Hunter Biden ... 😱

Please correct me if I’m wrong but, from memory Farage tried to worm his way into the Trump administration and even Trump had the sense to reject him. Which is saying something.

Going back to The Mail, I watched Question Time last night and looked up Peter Hitchens (who I couldn’t quite place )because I found him so vile and nauseating. No surprise to find out that he writes for The Mail.

I am stuck at home, with too much time on my hands…

According to their Companies House records, Farage is an active director (one of 4) of Reform UK Party Limited, is the majority shareholder (53%, I think), and was listed as a person with significant control of the company when it was known as The Brexit Party Linited. I can’t see any filings to suggest that his control - he can get rid of the rest of the board whenever he likes - changed when the name did. He might struggle with that in practice, since, at December 2022, the company has directors’ loans of over £1m, up from £849k the previous financial year.

Of course, as a private company, they have no members, and thus no democratic processes for developing policy or spending priorities (nor accountability for them).

HousePlantQueen Mon 11-Dec-23 14:38:56

Tice, of Reform party has been described as looking like the kind of person who swindles widows out of their fortune. Partner of Isobel Oakeshott.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 11-Dec-23 14:41:27

Have a look at the policies that they are suggesting. 😮

Siope Mon 11-Dec-23 15:17:23

I did (I’m bored witless today!). They are economically illiterate, largely undeliverable, limited in scope (I mean they cover very few areas of policy) and depth (no analysis, poor long-term planning, dubious financial claims, no counterfactuals) .

Of course, the long-term planning is probably irrelevant, since their energy ‘policy’ (based on incorrect figures re both costs and subsidies, inevitably) will have fried the planet within a short period.

flump Mon 11-Dec-23 15:44:24

Could someone, please, explain to me why there are people who want to vote for sociopaths, grifters and outright liars?

MaizieD Mon 11-Dec-23 15:47:57

They are economically illiterate,

I've had a look through their 'policies' and parts of their economic proposals are actually quite good. Namely, to sideline the QE 'debt' which isn't a debt in reality, by converting it to a very long dated bond with a low interest rate. In doing so, remove it from the record of the 'national debt'. And to stop 'Quantitative Tightening', which is removing money from the economy. Also to stop paying interest on bank reserves, which, as they were created by the central bank (BoE) makes no sense whatsoever and just contributes to the deficit, besides handing banks completely unearned profit.

The rest isn't brilliant.

Apart from that, assertions that they're going to remove 'woke' are just ludicrous...

MaizieD Mon 11-Dec-23 15:50:37

OMG, yes, Siope! Their energy policy is truly frightening...

Siope Mon 11-Dec-23 16:16:19

I probably - definitely - should have said financially illiterate, since, where I have any understanding of them, their baseline figures are mostly inaccurate.

But even economically I fail to see how they can promise, as they do, zero net immigration and a lower direct tax burden for working adults and growth in public services and the market.

Chocolatelovinggran Mon 11-Dec-23 16:49:40

Nigel Farage was an MEP who were not known for their abstemiousness. I think that Mr Farage commenting on the House of Commons is indulging in that activity known as pot calling the kettle black.

It will never happen so pointless getting worked up about it.

I agree tickingbird, it’s just the fevered dreams of the right wing press on a quiet Monday.

I will be watching Farage on GBNews at 7pm tonight. Since he’s been in the Jungle, Braverman & Jenrick have resigned over the leaky Rwanda deal that the ‘Star Chamber’ of lawyers in the ERG say has more holes (13 to be exact) than a colander. So many challenges will be enabled by migrant lawyers it’s going to be an (expensive - legal aid anyone? And who pays for THAT!) right old merry-go-round. Plus Cameron has been brought back, via a seat in the Lords no less, to shore up support and give gravitas to Sunak. It will make for an entertaining and informative hour till 8pm.

Regards the Rwanda Bill. I hope it doesn’t make it through the HoC vote tomorrow evening. It’s not robust enough so why bother? But I think Sunak hopes it’s wishy washy enough to get agreement of the One Nation caucus and get it into the Lords. Where it’ll sink. But most of the electorate won’t be so tuned in and will likely think ‘aw, he’s doing his best and look 👀 it’s those out of touch Lords again on the red benches, thwarting his best try’.

France must look at the UK and think we are their Rwanda ...

It is an imponderable.

Well I can assure you that this member of "the electorate" won't be tuned in to GB news.

Each to their own HPQ. 😁

BlueBelle

I can’t even bear to read the article just hearing the two names together makes me want to vomit

That sounds like what used to be called a hysterical reaction, BlueBelle, and must be very debilitating indeed. Have you sought medical help?

RosiesMaw Mon 11-Dec-23 18:22:33

No.
Next question?

Urmstongran Mon 11-Dec-23 19:32:11

Next question Rosie’sMaw? Hmm.
Who would be your dream ticket in a GE? 🤔

MaizieD Mon 11-Dec-23 19:46:25

Nobody is getting worked up about it. If you think they are you're imagining things...

Urmstongran Mon 11-Dec-23 19:52:39

Actually RosiesMaw ignore that question. It’s none of my business! As my dear dad taught me over 50 years ago. Unless you choose to say, it’s between you and the ballot box and it’s highly rude to ask.
😊

The horrific thing is with the Conservative party as it is now, in Mrs Thatcher's words TINA, There Is No (credible) Alternative.

Remember when there was - Mrs Thatcher, but also Michael Heseltine, Ken Clarke, Peter Walker, Lord Carrington, John Major.

One may not have supported Conservative Paty, but these men were towering intellects compared with the current shower and all were respected over seas and competent.

This lot couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery.

I don't see extreme distaste for two people who have worked to destroy Britain and messed up 1,000s, if not 1,000,000s, of people's lives in the process as being in the least bit hysterical.

Fleurpepper Mon 11-Dec-23 21:39:56

The ERG has been keeping a very low profile recently, but they are out in force, with all claws and daggers out. What a nasty lot- how come we tax payers are funding their seedy activities.
