David Attenborough programmes

There are rumours that the BBC is thinking of cancelling future Attenborough series. IMO these are educational in addition to being amazing to watch.

38 Degrees has launched a petition to stop the cancellation before it happens. In their view it is better to petition in advance so that the Beeb can think again.

I've put this on N & P because I think it gets more readers that the TV forum.

I suspect that the recent crop of Attenborough series have been very expensive to make. I am basing my guess on the length of time the camera people etc spend on location waiting for a specific event. Often these events are ones that most of us will never see.

I think it's just one episode in the next series.
Personally I consider him a wonderful educator about nature. I've learnt so much from his programmes.

David Attenborough’s wild life documentaries are educational. Why would they stop doing them 😫I remember taping them on my old VHS recorder and taking them to my brother in India.

I know we’re all supposed to worship at the shrine of David Attenborough, but I can’t stand him. I do like nature programmes though, just not his.

Nothing to do with emotion she was in charge of the PO when the Horizon scandal took place, its alledged she knew the system was at fault and tried to cover up.

What's so wrong with some emotion? There is a petition at the moment to strip Paul Vennells of her CBE for her role in the Post Office farce. Just in case you aren't aware of it see the thread in Chat.

Yes you can publicize an emotional topic and thousands will sign it without thought for the consequences, thankfully governments and the majority of the population have a balanced view.

The programme alledgedly dropped was very critical of food production in the UK, it may not be perfect but it is the most highly regulated in the world. The population do need food importing more make us more vulnerable to price fluctuations AND increases emissions in other countries with worse standards.

He’s 97. How many more programmes is he likely to make?

MerylStreep Sun 31-Dec-23 12:53:37

The one episode is available on Iplayer.

I wasn’t aware of 38 degrees so checked out their background, as far as I can see they are left wing assortment of political self publicists, of dubious credibility.

So no I do not support their view

Quite frankly I haven't read such nonsense in a long time.

38 Degrees has existed for a number of years. They are a campaigning organisation which covers a wide variety of topics. if you were to look on their website you would be aware of this.

It's not just 38 Degrees that thinks up topics for petitions. Members of the public can put forward suggestions and, if they have enough backers they will create the petition.

I started a campaign concerning the self employed but didn't get sufficient support in order to do a petition. Luckily someone else did.

Attenborough , as said is only the Narrator. Dozens of other people are involved in filming, research etc.
I expect there will soon be other programmes to take its place.
At 97 he probably want a bit of a rest and more heresy, I can’t stand his voice.

Aveline Sun 31-Dec-23 11:58:44

There often seem to be programmes or part of programmes on 'how this was filmed'. I suppose this puts a spotlight on the various technicians (for want of a better word).

Theexwife Sun 31-Dec-23 11:57:01

I think that others involved in the making of Attenborough programmes do not get enough recognition, the director, camera crew, researchers and editors have the difficult job , yet as narrator David Attenborough gets all the praise and awards.

Aveline Sun 31-Dec-23 11:51:08

I can't bear David Attenborough programmes. I know this is heresy! It's the way they show some poor creature in dreadful jeopardy then (sometimes) show them being saved. It's stressful viewing and life is stressful enough. I only have to hear his voice and I switch over.
PS I'm sure he's a lovely man. A friend of my mother's sat next to him at a dinner once and said he was charming.

Doodledog Sun 31-Dec-23 11:35:35

It would be newsworthy if someone in a position of control denied either, in which case I am sure that 38 degrees would act.

It would be a shame to 'axe' Attenborough for pseudo-political reasons, after a long career of educating millions of us into the ways of animals and plants. If he wants to put his feet up, however, I think it's fair to say he's served his time grin.

You dont support someones view because they are left wing? What would happen if they said the earth was round and that gravity exists.

They would not say that because it’s not newsworthy, attention is only given to extreme or controversial opinions.

The BBC sure knows how to alienate people in a hurry.

Dinahmo Sat 30-Dec-23 19:48:30

This one, Dinahmo?

Thank you so much for drawing it to our attention!

I don't protest based on rumours.

You could at least look at 38 Degrees website and their reasons for the petition. It's usually too late to protest after the event.

well we all know that theBBC is influenced by government and Aiienburgh is an awkward reflection of just what they aren't doing to help our precious planet..

Katie59 Fri 29-Dec-23 16:59:20

There is one episode about British wildlife that it is rumored will be axed because it’s too political.

That aside Attenborough is very high profile and many take his word as gospel rather than predictions.

Siope Fri 29-Dec-23 16:27:45

I imagine it’s another consequence of the government repeatedly reducing the BBC’s funding.
