Defrauding the public purse apples to more than claiming benefits fraudulently. There is also winning lucrative Government contracts for supplying equipment or supplies that never materialises. I daresay there are other ways in which those close to sources of political power can defraud us, too.

Why do I doubt that the sort of detail that I as a lawyer would want to see won’t be there Lizzie? It’s no more than a meaningless statement designed to create vote-catching headlines without the public actually stopping to think that fraud is punishable as a crime already.

In answer to your question DaisyAnne, yes I would expect the UK to have a law criminalising the defrauding of the public purse. I’m amazed that we don’t already have such a law. I suppose that’s why so many high profile people have recently got away with doing just that!

GSM as I’m sure you’re aware, much more detail will be presented in Labour’s manifesto as soon as the current government decides to announce a GE. No opposition party will give out fine details at this point.

I have no desire to hear the full speech thank you.

I guess benefits fraud is defrauding the public purse. It is a criminal offence. It sounds a bit of a wishy washy ‘say something they want to hear’ statement. Detail needed.

A new year, and we begin to see the details emerging of Labour'policies, should they be elected.

Firstly, in Keir Starmer's speech today he will focus his message on cleaning up politics, with a policy of making defrauding the public purse a specific criminal offence.

There is such a law in the USA and other countries apparently, but not here.

This could go be passed very quickly while they unravel what the Tories have left them. It's also something I think most people would expect us to already have. You have to ask why, when we have seen what has happened with Covid, etc., the Tories haven't already done this.

Would you expect us to have such a law?
