It is worth listening to "Are the kids Alt right?" on radio 4.

I find this very scary, Even accepting that people in Germany, esp. the young, are finding it difficult, to turn to a far right party thinking that they have all the answers, is not good. I suppose it falls in line with other populist leaders such as Orban, Johnson, Trump, etc.
Is immigration the main driver perhaps?

I have no confidence one way or the other, but the fact that 20% of Germans are voting for a fascist party, after their history 😮😮. We are living in a mad world.

Human nature.
Germany have been in a recession for almost 2 years, and things aren’t looking much better.
It’s not difficult to understand when you have lost your job/ house/ family and your country is spending eye watering billions of euros to support asylum seekers.
It was always going to happen, sad to say.

According to this
edition.cnn.com/2024/01/20/europe/germany-protests-far-right-afd-migrant-deportation-plan-intl/index.html

20 million have a history of migration. [which is 25% of the population].

I happened to read this week, that the figure in the Uk is 18%.

Maybe there is a tipping point?

I don’t think they will get anywhere politically, they are too extreme.
Just as Marine Le Pen never gets into power in France.

Unfortunately, I am not sure I would agree.

Germany relies on many migrant workers just as we do.

I find this all very upsetting. My Mother only just managed to escape the Nazis and I have just read Daniel Finkelstein's book "Hitler Stalin Mum & Dad" which is excellent and tells of the rise of the Nazis in 1930's Germany. People used to say "never again" but sadly I can see it happening.

I don’t think the German car manufacturers will be happy about that.
Most of those workers will have Turkish ancestry.

I hoped all this would end when the wall came down in the 80s.
We are living in dangerous times with NATO saying they are preparing for conflict with Russia, the war between Israel and Hamas that is feared will escalate to other regions.

It also wants to “get rid” of the left - not sure how that will happen.
That sounds scary

It's frightening isn't it Whitewavemark. When I saw it on the news at lunch time about what's happening in Germany, it made my blood run cold.

JaneJudge Sun 21-Jan-24 15:58:57

depressing

The AfD - a far right German political party, and supported at the last election by 20% of the voters, has recently indicated that it wants to return Germany to a more pure form of German. To do so it will ensure anyone with “foreign” ancestry, will be exported. It also wants to “get rid” of the left - not sure how that will happen.

There are many protests taking place - I expect you’ve seen them on the news - and the call is to ban the AfD as a fascist party.

Today in the Observer, there was an article outlining the rise of fascism in Europe, the article also suggested that Trump is the leader of fascism in the USA and thus encouraging fascists in Europe.
