Fascism in Germany

The AfD - a far right German political party, and supported at the last election by 20% of the voters, has recently indicated that it wants to return Germany to a more pure form of German. To do so it will ensure anyone with “foreign” ancestry, will be exported. It also wants to “get rid” of the left - not sure how that will happen.

There are many protests taking place - I expect you’ve seen them on the news - and the call is to ban the AfD as a fascist party.

Today in the Observer, there was an article outlining the rise of fascism in Europe, the article also suggested that Trump is the leader of fascism in the USA and thus encouraging fascists in Europe.

depressing

It's frightening isn't it Whitewavemark. When I saw it on the news at lunch time about what's happening in Germany, it made my blood run cold.

That sounds scary

OMG 😰!!!!!
I have no more to say .

I hoped all this would end when the wall came down in the 80s.
We are living in dangerous times with NATO saying they are preparing for conflict with Russia, the war between Israel and Hamas that is feared will escalate to other regions.

I don’t think the German car manufacturers will be happy about that.
Most of those workers will have Turkish ancestry.

I find this all very upsetting. My Mother only just managed to escape the Nazis and I have just read Daniel Finkelstein's book "Hitler Stalin Mum & Dad" which is excellent and tells of the rise of the Nazis in 1930's Germany. People used to say "never again" but sadly I can see it happening.

I don’t think they will get anywhere politically, they are too extreme.
Just as Marine Le Pen never gets into power in France.

Oreo Sun 21-Jan-24 17:17:45

Germany relies on many migrant workers just as we do.

Unfortunately, I am not sure I would agree.

According to this
edition.cnn.com/2024/01/20/europe/germany-protests-far-right-afd-migrant-deportation-plan-intl/index.html

20 million have a history of migration. [which is 25% of the population].

I happened to read this week, that the figure in the Uk is 18%.

Maybe there is a tipping point?

Whitewavemark2 Sun 21-Jan-24 17:30:57

I have no confidence one way or the other, but the fact that 20% of Germans are voting for a fascist party, after their history 😮😮. We are living in a mad world.

Human nature.
Germany have been in a recession for almost 2 years, and things aren’t looking much better.
It’s not difficult to understand when you have lost your job/ house/ family and your country is spending eye watering billions of euros to support asylum seekers.
It was always going to happen, sad to say.

Jane71 Sun 21-Jan-24 18:52:05

I find this very scary, Even accepting that people in Germany, esp. the young, are finding it difficult, to turn to a far right party thinking that they have all the answers, is not good. I suppose it falls in line with other populist leaders such as Orban, Johnson, Trump, etc.
Is immigration the main driver perhaps?

It is worth listening to "Are the kids Alt right?" on radio 4.

There is an undercurrent of extreme right wing support in all countries including the UK, call it fascism if you want, Germany has specific laws that ban any activity. Other countries allow neo fascist groups to campaign openly

It isn’t my call it is the BBCs.

It makes me think of when things were turning very nasty in England and when France started I did wonder how long before it gets ugly with other countries joining in. Given Germany’s history it feels so much worse. Why do, oh never mind, you can’t ask sensible questions with the likes of such groups can you.

MaizieD Mon 22-Jan-24 09:20:33

Michael Rosen explains it. This is from 2014

Fascism: I sometimes fear...
I sometimes fear that
people think that fascism arrives in fancy dress
worn by grotesques and monsters
as played out in endless re-runs of the Nazis.

Fascism arrives as your friend.
It will restore your honour,
make you feel proud,
protect your house,
give you a job,
clean up the neighbourhood,
remind you of how great you once were,
clear out the venal and the corrupt,
remove anything you feel is unlike you...

It doesn't walk in saying,
"Our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution."

michaelrosenblog.blogspot.com/2014/05/fascism-i-sometimes-fear.html

This is all too true, but deeply attractive to many people. We see plenty of them on here...

I'm thinking about the story posted recently about the border force personnel being trained to manhandle asylum seekers onto planes to fly them to Rwanda. I'm sure the people being trained are lovely people who are just doing their jobs, but so were the people who herded Jews onto trains to Auchwitz

Awful awful awful. Will we never learn? The Nazis rose to power as an ‘answer’ to poverty and recession and people fell for their lies hook line and sinker. Not just a few ,either, but a majority . The history of the 1930s and 1940s should be taught in every school all throughout Europe and America to ensure it never happens again. It can happen anywhere, not just in Germany.

MaizieD Mon 22-Jan-24 09:30:51

The story of the rise of fascism is taught, nanna8, but people are reluctant to recognise it happening in their own country.

maddyone Mon 22-Jan-24 09:37:25

It’s very worrying, especially in Germany, but it’s happening in France too, and maybe other countries.

Casdon Mon 22-Jan-24 10:12:07

It’s happening in the UK too maddyone, right under our noses.
