Will Israel comply to the ICJ ruling?
(196 Posts)So the ICJ has stopped short of demanding a complete ceasefire, saying that Israel has a right to defend itself, but has ruled that South Africa does indeed have a plausible case under the Genocide Convention 1948. The ICJ roughly agreed with all 9 points of the South African case.
So the call is for Israel to immediately
Stop killing Palestinians civilians
Take immediate and effective action to give humanitarian aid to the civilian population, including water, food and medical aid.
Amongst other issues.
Will Israel comply?
They have a month to report back to the ICJ.

Jaberwok the difference is Russia = Russians. Isreal = Jews
Israel = Islamists, Jews, Christians amongst others. The majority - just over 70% are those following the Jewish faith.
Israel is a secular state.
But when we speak of Israelis we speak of people of all faiths and none.
As far as aid is concerned I can find no evidence that Israel has provided any. The UN says
Since the war began, a small group of nations (including Turkey, Qatar, the UAE, Jordan, India, Tunisia, and Rwanda) have sent medical supplies, food, and drinking water to the region in anticipation of the opportunity to deliver it into Gaza
Israel has kept the aid lorries waiting at the crossings..
Yes Annie. Things blow up, people forced from whole villages (Silvan comes to mind) families forced from their homes, their land, crops are damaged, so people are angry, boys throw stones, they get shot, and yes over the many years of this happening thousands have died.
It is reported, mentioned at the end of a news cast or towards the back of a newspaper , not like the wall to wall reporting since October, but it’s not headlined.
It’s all there to find if anyone wants to look and better understand there is a background to this unhappy situation. Of course we as a country were involved in much of this chaos.
Of course Annie, silly me, Israel = Jews. That tells me everything.

I agree that every civilian is one too many but please remember that Israel was going abouts its business on that sunny Saturday morning in October when death came to visit. Those were innocent civilians.
Post October 7th, Israel had to defend itself, just as we have done in the past and may have to do so again.
Do any of you think that Hamas thought that Israel would not defend itself - find the murderers?
Follow that line, did Hamas think that their own population would be hurt? Of course they did.
Hamas have rooted themselves in highly populated areas, knowing full-well that targeting them would cause mayhem for their people. For Hamas, people are expendable - but it makes for jolly good PR/TV footage..
You don’t need to remind me the grievous crimes committed by Hamas.
Israel have the absolute right to defend itself, but it must be proportionate, and in my view it isn’t.
The arguments have been aired over and over and quite honestly I see little point in going over them again.
As far as I am concerned a two state solution should have been negotiated years ago, and indeed is the only way forward today. Netanyahu doesn’t agree - which is a tragedy for Israel, as it will never have peace if it continually refuses this course.

Russia also committing war crimes by their illegal unprovoked attack on Ukraine, but international organisations aren't too bothered about that, only the hated Israel. No one else ever seems to incur any wrath with anyone at all, no matter how many laws they break or how heinous their crimes to humanity no one cares.
The US and the UK are arming Ukraine. And have protested.
IF you want these things to be equal we should be arming Palestinians
Every 3 to 4 years Israel kills thousands of Palastinians but it isn’t reported !
Candelle everywhere in tiny Gaza is highly populated. It’s the size of the Isle of Wight with a population of nearly 2.5 million.
There is no space and nowhere to escape to because Israel has total control over who and what comes in and out of Gaza.
It’s really quite upsetting to have to be saying these things, especially today.
I stand to be corrected but the amount of aid provided is tiny for a population of over 2 million.
I don’t think Israel provides any aid. Aid is provided by international charity organisations whose lorries are held up for many days, sometimes longer, waiting for israel to give permission for aid to go through the border.
As has been said so many times this did not suddenly come out of the blue in October. It’s the result of years of oppression and the killings of thousands of Palestinians by Israelis every 3 or 4 years it blows up but barely reported by our media.
It’s easy to find out for those who wish to see.
My view for what it’s worth but I have followed this for at least 30 years, is, that the current far right Israeli government want rid of the Gazan population altogether. The land is good, Israel always wants more land, there are issues with water which in Palestinian areas is often turned off.
As for the West Bank that will probably be next.
To candelle Israel going about its business as usual is that of an occupying and oppressive regime. Palestinian lives are seen as less valuable than Israeli lives to the Israelis. I wish the carnage would stop.
Taking hostages is dreadful. Bombing, randomly killing thousands is also dreadful.
Please can the killing cease.

For all that believe that Israel has just aimed rockets and bombs at innocent Palestinian civilians with no targeting of Hamas personnel: only repeatedly hitting innocent women and children (but no men - as shown on your television screens) but then do nothing to help, please read the following. Please also keep in mind that Israel was grievously attacked and did not begin a war.
As of last Sunday, Israel has sent:
9,923 trucks containing 182,670 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people. This comprises:
5,586 trucks transporting 117,350 tonnes of food.
1,440 trucks transporting 20,780 tonnes of shelter
1,143 trucks transporting 13,550 tonnes of medical supplies
947 trucks transporting 19,020 tonnes of water
807 trucks transporting 11,970 tonnes of other aid
For a country that was attacked, I think that they have gone above and beyond. Would the UK have delivered such aid to Germany in the middle of WW11?
Did any GNetters know about this aid? Has it been in the newspapers for you to read?

The figures on the Palestinians killed in this war come from.... Hamas.
Do you really believe them?
Until there is evidence to show that the figures are incorrect - I have nothing else to base my judgement on.
One innocent civilian is too many as far as I am concerned.
- on both sides.
All are war crimes - no side is innocent.
I think it’s internationally accepted that the figures coming from Hamas are accurate.
Unfortunately for Israel, the terrorist organisation, Hamas, have extremely good public relations. Much of the world seems to believe everything they say which includes film of 'incidents' shown on television around the world which, if forensically examined show how the clip of film is put together.
Please do not believe what Hamas say.
I have difficulties with the numbers killed, have from the start,
Emphasis always been xxxxx number of children, photographs
of babies laid on mattresses etc

To cut off funding for millions of sick and starving people because 12 people out of thousands who are working fir UNWRA were involved on 7 October is just wrong.
They have been sacked and being investigated so to stop
vital finding because of a handful who have been dealt with is immoral.
I doubt that the funding has been stopped on a whim
There is obviously more going on than what is already in the public domain.
26,083 Palestinians dead
64,000 wounded
320 palistinians dead in the West Bank
1.140 Israeli s dead most 0f these on the 7 October very few since.
83 Journalists dead
76 palistinians
4 Israelis
3 Lebanese
136 UNWRA workers dead
Each of these was someone’s mother father sister brother son daughter. People like us. Good and bad.
Vital funding

It isn’t genocide.
It isn't genocide but Hamas still seem to have an effective PA system despite all their attacks and their declared intent to wipeout all Israelis. Consequently views are skewed by the images of people in distress in Gaza.
Israelis I know would like the whole thing to stop but are clear that
a) the treat to Israel is real until Hamas is defeated and
b) Mr Netanyahu will not be re-elected once the war is over.
GrannyGravy13 makes a good point about the Rafa crossing - Egypt is keeping the gates very firmly closed.
