Will Israel comply to the ICJ ruling?

So the ICJ has stopped short of demanding a complete ceasefire, saying that Israel has a right to defend itself, but has ruled that South Africa does indeed have a plausible case under the Genocide Convention 1948. The ICJ roughly agreed with all 9 points of the South African case.

So the call is for Israel to immediately

Stop killing Palestinians civilians

Take immediate and effective action to give humanitarian aid to the civilian population, including water, food and medical aid.

Amongst other issues.

Will Israel comply?

They have a month to report back to the ICJ.

I very much doubt it, I'm sorry to say.

petra Sat 27-Jan-24 09:44:11

Listening to Netanyahus reply to the court, not a hope in hell.

Grannybags Sat 27-Jan-24 09:47:58

Never unfortunately

Grantanow Sat 27-Jan-24 10:09:44

Will HAMAS comply with the Court's requirement they free the hostages?

NotSpaghetti Sat 27-Jan-24 10:11:54

No. He will just go on as he has been doing.

I too ask this question

Another me too here.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 27-Jan-24 10:28:13

I doubt very much that Hamas will comply with the ICJ and release the hostages.

Jaberwok Sat 27-Jan-24 10:43:01

What about a court requirement that Russia ceases their invasion of Ukraine? Yes? No! thought not! Such hypocrisy! As for the poor hostages, those that are alive that is; will Hamas comply? I think not. So stalemate it is.

Glorianny Sat 27-Jan-24 10:43:14

I don't know if Israel or Hamas will comply with the ruling (although I do wonder if the hostages are still alive and if anyone knows where they are)
I do hope the UK will stop supplying arms to Israel so facilitating this genocide.

Oreo Sat 27-Jan-24 10:44:26

It isn’t genocide.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 27-Jan-24 10:46:07

I hope that whoever is still managing to get arms to Hamas and its supporters is stopped.

I would like Hamas to give some of their stashed supplies to the innocent citizens of Gaza.

I would like Egypt to open the Rafa crossing to let aid through.

Bella23 Sat 27-Jan-24 10:48:22

I hope that Holocaust Day will make all sides reflect on what they are doing to innocent people.

silverlining48 Sat 27-Jan-24 10:48:41

Israel won’t take any notice of the judgment.

Hamas been asking for a ceasefire

Thousands of Palestinians will continue to die.

Captured Israelis also risk death simply by being in Gaza and constant Israeli Bombardment.

Most ordinary people wherever they are just want a safe, peaceful life for them and their families but are subject to decisions are made by those in power. It’s a total tragedy.

This ruling is about genocide in Gaza, by Israel.

Hamas were not under consideration.

Whataboutery cuts no ice.

The Court saw fit, in the context of South Africa's application, to call for HAMAS to release the hostages. I don't think that is 'whataboutery'. The Court's problem in dealing with HAMAS is that it is not a signatory to the treaty governing the Court.

UNWRA (United Nations Relief and works agency) USA, Canada and now U.K. have suspended all funding to this organisation working in Gaza after revelations that aid workers employed by UNWRA took part in the heinous attack of 7/10/23.

Cadenza123 Sat 27-Jan-24 14:29:36

No I don't think that Israel will comply while they have the backing of the US.

lixy Sat 27-Jan-24 14:41:54

Oreo

It isn’t genocide.

It isn't genocide but Hamas still seem to have an effective PA system despite all their attacks and their declared intent to wipeout all Israelis. Consequently views are skewed by the images of people in distress in Gaza.
Israelis I know would like the whole thing to stop but are clear that
a) the treat to Israel is real until Hamas is defeated and
b) Mr Netanyahu will not be re-elected once the war is over.

GrannyGravy13 makes a good point about the Rafa crossing - Egypt is keeping the gates very firmly closed.

silverlining48 Sat 27-Jan-24 14:43:57

To cut off funding for millions of sick and starving people because 12 people out of thousands who are working fir UNWRA were involved on 7 October is just wrong.
They have been sacked and being investigated so to stop
vital finding because of a handful who have been dealt with is immoral.

silverlining48 Sat 27-Jan-24 14:45:05

Vital funding

silverlining48 Sat 27-Jan-24 15:06:59

26,083 Palestinians dead
64,000 wounded

320 palistinians dead in the West Bank

1.140 Israeli s dead most 0f these on the 7 October very few since.

83 Journalists dead

76 palistinians
4 Israelis
3 Lebanese

136 UNWRA workers dead

Each of these was someone’s mother father sister brother son daughter. People like us. Good and bad.

I doubt that the funding has been stopped on a whim

There is obviously more going on than what is already in the public domain.
