Yes, Nick Clegg

Any socialists who vote for the Greens are going to be sadly disappointed. We've got a Green/Labour split in Bristol mostly thanks to young people (whose concern about the planet is understandable and admirable) but believe me, the Greens are an inept (and rather strange) bunch of white middle class types.

Their puritanical zeal is akin to Oliver Cromwell whilst they all live in the most exclusive part of the city. They care no more about the common man than the Tories do.

As for the Lib Dems, remember how quickly they jumped into bed with the Tories anyone?

For anybody who hasn’t seen it, this Andrew Marr for the New Statesman analysis of how Rishi Sunak is losing right wing press support is also very interesting.

Yes, I read the article. If you look at any right wing press they are pushing very much for a right wing agenda, they don’t like Sunak either because they see him as ‘too liberal’, they tried to bring Ed Davey down regarding the post office, and their treatment of the leaders of the devolved nations, whoever they are, is appalling. I think people are disillusioned with politicians generally, and I don’t think most pay much notice now to the press, which is why the smear campaigns seem to be having little effect.

The article is about the increasing attempts to smear Starmer by the right wing press. It's not about wwhether one is going to vote Labour or Lib Dem in the next election.

Well, I am not certain what I will get by voting Labour, but I do know what I will get with another Tory government and it terrifies me. He may not set the world of politics on fire, but having seen what "personalities" like Johnson and Truss have done, I will settle for boring.

Forget tactical voting in most constituencies, LD are not going to gain enough seats to make a difference, only a landslide to Labour is going to give Starmer a decent majority

I think that left leaning people will vote tactically to get the Tories out, that might mean voting LibDem. But in areas where Labour are bound to win they will vote for the Greens or for an independent socialist.

according to left wingers....not communists or extreme left ,thats how he's seen .He hasn't BEEN an effective opposition, just a back up to the Tories .He's not popular in Scotland at all .

No politician is popular in Scotland at the moment are they paddyann54? I’m not saying that to wind you up, I just can’t seem to find much enthusiasm online for any of the party leaders.
I do think there’s a general malaise about politicians which is colouring our views wherever we are. We need a period of stability and to rebuild public trust.

I love the "plays the flute'. That's a real killer line, isn't it 😆

Who are the far left going to vote for, Ilovecheese?. The Green Party? Tactically ? Could they hold their noses tightly enough to vote for the LibDems, just to get the tories out? Are there enough of them to make a difference in any constituency?
It's an interesting question.

Casdon Thu 01-Feb-24 16:12:30

And yet, he’s the second most popular politician in the UK according to YouGov.

But we are not talking about the "Far left" or about Corbyn.
We are talking about Keir Starmer, His supporters are asking the so called "far left" to vote for him because "we need to defeat the Tories".
It is hardly a ringing endorsement.
He will win the next election because he is not the Conservatives not because he is inspiring or popular.
He intends to continue very similar policies to the Conservatives.

Anniebach Thu 01-Feb-24 15:51:36

The far left thought Corbyn was such a winner, he gave Labour the worse defeat since 1935

According to the right wing press, he’s a hypocrite, a racist, a liar, an ocean-going dud who doesn’t believe in anything. He can’t be trusted on Brexit or security. He can’t be trusted to protect women. He can’t be trusted with the economy, the NHS, the free press or even the monarchy. In fact, he can’t be trusted on anything. What’s more, he’s rich, he’s woke, and he plays the flute.

The proprietors of the right wing press have non dom status - perhaps that is not known by everyone, unlike the status of Sunak's wife which caused an uproar in the country. Starmer has threatened to open Leveson 2 which bring in tougher regulation and possibly put the proprietors non dom status in jeopardy.

Here's a link to an article in the New European about the smears.
