Even Tony Blair has admitted that he didn't think that so many people would want to come to Britain with the widening of the EU and it was a bit of a mistake. Whilst there is no doubt that subsequent Governments haven't helped, opening the floodgates initially was pretty disastrous.

But just look at the evidence icanhandthemback, it’s in the last three years that the numbers have increased exponentially.

Yes, but once Blair opened the floodgates and word spread then everybody wanted to come here. Every day hundreds arrive here on rubber dinghies and they see that it’s possible so they do likewise.

The only way to stop them is to puncture the boats before they set off but of course, the French won’t put themselves out to do that.

85% arrived on boats 2022-23. Probably even more now.

He did indeed and he died to save us from our sins, or so our Vicar reminded us this morning.
Our Church welcomes those in need. We have a volunteer contingent to help our local asylum seekers.

There were 52,530 in the year to June 2023 out of a total of 672,000 total immigrants. 85% of the 52,530 arrived by boat, compared with 621,470 who arrived by legal methods.
For those who have an issue with immigration, a focus purely on people who arrive by boat is perverse to say the least. It’s also irrational to blame Tony Blair for something which the current government has had 14 years to change, and the statistical evidence proves immigration in the UK has skyrocketed in the last 3 years - in common with the rest of Europe.

Apart from the numbers, which we cannot deal with, it's who they are, and what are they keeping from the Home Office in their bid to stay in the UK.

You know nothing about me so why use the word “hatred”?

I don’t hate anybody but mainly fit young men leaving their families behind and expecting us to look after them is just not on. As Freya says we know nothing about them either.

We have a proud history of taking in people from all over the world but now we need to pull up the drawbridge until we ensure everybody who is already here is looked after properly.

We all have a problem with immigration. The simple fact is the numbers are too high. Three quarters of a million people last year, and a similar number the year before. The problem is this:

1) insufficient housing
2) struggling and inadequate health provision with some eight million people on waits lists
3) crumbling roads
4) too many vehicles on the roads
5) insufficient water as soon as the sun shines for a few weeks
6) insufficient dentists
7) insufficient nurses
8) insufficient doctors
9) insufficient radiographers and other qualified health professionals
9) insufficient school places (maybe remedied naturally over a few years with falling birth rates)
10) pollution - more people produce more pollution by using energy, and produce more waste

I’m sure there are are other reasons such as the need for social cohesion. After mass immigration there needs to be a settling period to encourage social cohesion. Too much too soon produces conflict.

I am certainly not in any way against immigration, but it needs to be managed. It needs to managed in order to allow time to ensure that the facilities the country has to offer can support the number of people who live here. It’s really not rocket science.

And yes I know that large numbers of immigrants work in the NHS and social care, and believe me, I have had cause to meet some of them, and they are wonderful. But many do not work in these areas, and anyway, we still need the infrastructure to support us all, immigrants and those of us who are not immigrants.

What I don’t understand is why Tory voters aren’t more vociferous in lobbying the government about the legal migration increases if people feel as you do maddyone, whereas as it is the total focus seems to be on boat arrivals who make up considerably less than 10% of the total.

The Conservatives don’t care Casdon. They only care about growth. We have high immigration because the Conservatives want growth. However despite high immigration growth has remained stubbornly low. Labour won’t be any different. They will chase growth too. I despair. No political party actually cares about the ordinary person in the street who pays taxes and expects a certain return for those taxes.

With regard to the boat people, the media concentrate on these people which is probably why some people become upset about them. They really are a very small proportion of the total immigration. I’m not saying the problem isn’t important, but it is dwarfed by legal immigration. And the overall difficulties with too high immigration as I mentioned in my previous post are not being addressed by this government,and I’m not expecting any difference from the next government. MPs can afford housing, private health care, and a host of other benefits that are unaffordable to the average member of the public. They generally don’t have to deal with the consequences of high immigration.

maddyone - your list of shortages, eg doctors, nurses, dentists, housing etc is entirely accurate. It’s aided by immigration and is something our government should have been focussed on but it simply doesn’t care.

Depressing isn’t it maddyone. I share the concerns about pressure on services caused by ourselves and every other European country providing asylum to people fleeing war torn countries. That doesn’t mean I’d turn these people away.
I do not understand why posters who rage about young, single men arriving can’t accept the reality. Families put their money into the strongest, most capable young man so he can attempt the journey to Europe, seek asylum so his family can join him.
I’m unable to drive at the moment and I’ve got to know so many taxi drivers from places like, Syria, Sudan, Congo Angola and more. Helpful kind, loving living in our area , grateful to have children in school and contributing positively. Yes of course I’m aware there are villains and crooks arriving. Put money into the asylum system. Get real about who is allowed to stay and deport people who commit crimes

It is depressing, definitely. I think government, this one won’t, and we’ll have to see with the next one, ought to deport those people who are criminals or not entitled to stay. If that was done properly, it would probably ease the worries people have. Obviously the case which this thread is about has caused huge disquiet, and so it ought to, because a young woman has had life changing injuries inflicted on her because of the incompetence of the asylum system. If it was seen to be working as it should, I really do feel people would be reassured that decisions were made that would keep them safe. However the problem re inadequate infrastructure is not being caused by the people who arrive by boat, it’s caused by the huge numbers arriving legally plus inadequate investment in services, meaning we have inadequate facilities for them or the rest of us. I do think Labour will try to improve the NHS, the Blair government made massive improvements to the NHS. However all the other things are debatable because there isn’t the money to really get to grips with everything that needs to be done. Improvements will happen gradually over time.

It’s becoming difficult not to believe the govt is deliberately letting things get worse. The doctors pay dispute could and should be settled now.
It’s offering free childcare - but it won’t be introduced until after the next election so this govt doesn’t have to find funds.

I think it's also partly our society's desire for easy solutions to complex problems, its unfortunately rarely that easy. Childcare for example is a complex issue, the sector is beset by high turnover, recruitment difficulties, etc, free childcare (and it wont be free because nurseries cant afford it to be) wont solve the problem in the way they think it will.
