I don’t believe he’s died from jumping in the river. If that is the case his body will wash up somewhere but I don’t think it will.

I heard on the news tonight the police believe he is dead and that is what I have thought from the beginning the fact that he must have been in so much pain and mentally unwell and used no money since the incidence really pointed to me that he had taken his own life or even died from his untreated injuries.

I've had a news feed through that due to CTV footage, the police believe he jumped from a bridge and has drowned. Anyone else seen or heard this?

If it's the case, I hope they find his body so at least that poor woman and her children will know he can never hurt them again.

They may have come out of the Forces and found their marriages have broken down, they are then homeless.

icanhandthemback I only know it from the Forces side, we know several welfare officers, both here and abroad and know how hard they work with those who suffer difficulties once leaving the armed services.

Much of the help does come from charities, though, not government and volunteer workers for RBL, SSAFA etc.

Can I respectfully point out that the ex serviceman living on the streets are those that have refused help from various agencies, including their former regiments.

There are resources out there for them physical, financial, mental health and help with housing.

Some people have to hit rock bottom before they can even contemplate asking for help.

It is indeed a genuine question. Often the two groups of people are tied together in conversations.

There is a perception that there is a pot of money/recources and that somehow ex service people and those seeking asylum are in competition.That somehow " our own " are more worthy, a better class of human being.

I have heard and read that reasonable provision is made for ex service personel and I certainly hope so. Any body experiencing poor mental health should be helped.

People seeking asylum are often turfed out of hotels onto the street with nothing and become homeless.
I have never heard of mobile phones being given away and it seems strange that this is still trotted out indignantly, as if they are the very height of luxury.

There are sufficient rescources in this, the 5th richest country in the world to manage change without pitting groups of people against each other.

GrannyGravy13, that is not necessarily true. One of my tenants has a home because I rescued him. He had very little help at all as he struggles with his mental health issues. My son in law was in the same boat and we rescued him. Help took a long time to actually arrive because of long waiting lists, waiting to hear outcomes of reviews of claims against the Service, etc, etc.
My tenant has come from living in a tent on a roundabout to having a home, getting a job and working with a charity to help other servicemen in the same position as him. I am glad I took a chance on him because he has proved I can put my trust in him.

The ex service people have served our country and many are now homeless, often because of mental health problems. They have no safe place to go. Asylum seekers are given a roof over their head, three meals a day, a mobile phone and pocket money, regardless of whether they may be given asylum or not. They also have good access to health care, which is a finite resource which many have difficulty accessing. Our own homeless have none of these privileges. Does that answer your question?

It seems to come up over and over again. One is not stealing resources from the other.
