It’s just been on the news that Charles has cancer and is not taking any duties for now

Jaberwok Wed 07-Feb-24 14:30:37

The King is not the only person to have private medical treatment. Most wealthy people/celebrities do just that and people don't criticise them. How would it help reduce waiting times if all these people including the King were to join the queue? My experience of the NHS and cancer/serious illness treatment is excellent, others areas? Not too bad but could do better.

Lizhol77 Wed 07-Feb-24 14:12:39

I don't think he will have to go on a waiting list for treatment like two of my friends and a family member .

I haven't read all the thread but noticed that Helen says she is leaving Gransnet because she doesn't agree with some of the posts she has read on this and other topics. She, in particular, took offence at coolcoco's comments.

The vast majority of posters on this thread have made very mild comments re this topic but obviously some people have different views. I am always sad to hear about anyone's diagnosis of a horrible illness but I tend to agree that there is already too much coverage on this issue.

If you find a site that absolutely mirrors all of your views and values, I should think it would be very dull - and actually I think it would be rather sinister. Sometimes I believe we need to listen to views that are not in line with our own, however annoying or distasteful they may feel to us.
Also, self-censorship often occurs when people are afraid to voice their honest opinions because they may be criticised, ridiculed or ganged up on. This is how authoritarian leaders seize more and more power until almost everyone remains silent.

You couldn't have got it more wrong. Rightly or wrongly Helen was supporting coolcoco, in favour of diversity of opinion but averse to the criticism, ridicule and ganging up on by other commenters that she said she had read on this and other threads.
I don't have an opinion on it but l dislike misrepresentation.

Yes, you're correct, OldFrill

Also, it's not unknown for some new (and controversial) posters to use two usernames and write in support of themselves on threads.
How they do it without getting confused, I don't know, but it happens!

He will get the same treatment as those using the NHS. And people don’t sit on waiting lists with suspected or diagnosed cancer.

You are absolutely right here, to the extent that I'm not even using my private insurance as there's nothing at all to be gained in terms of timing or treatment - Kingston hospital's breast cancer team are brilliant (plus the place is linked to the Royal Marsden).

Nostradamus died in 1566.

Paperbackwriter Wed 07-Feb-24 13:51:13

As a person recently diagnosed with breast cancer, I am all for openness about cancer, whichever sort it is. For one thing, the sort I've got (invasive lobular) doesn't present - at first - with lumps and I didn't know this. So everybody, watch out for any changes in shape or size and don't do what I did, think it's all OK because you feel no lump!

I hope whatever the king has, that it's treatable and that he'll be OK.

merlotgran Wed 07-Feb-24 13:42:24

Best wishes to your DH, Twig14. My brother will be having his third cancer op tomorrow.

We also serve who only stand and wait.

Not a royalist by any means but very sad news for anybody. At least he'll get the very best traetment available unlike some people on the NHS waiting lists.
Of course it would be headline news, he's our King!

I know of three people who were in hospital for treatment of cancer/heart problems within days. I am no fan of the Westminster government or the Scottish government (two of the above were in Scotland) but that’s a fact.
As for having short memories I remember very well, we haven’t been allowed to forget, but feel it inappropriate to bring these things up at this time. Perhaps the King’s illness will bring about some sort of reconciliation between Harry and himself and, in time, between William and Harry. That’s what, apart from full recovery from a horrible illness for the King, I hope for.

Jaberwok Wed 07-Feb-24 12:45:42

Thank you Annie x. nadateturbe, nothing to apologise for, I really wish you well at this difficult time.

Sorry, but predictions from Nostradamus - come on. This is getting too silly for words. Next we'll be hearing from someone who's been talking to Di from beyond the grave!

Anniebach Wed 07-Feb-24 12:39:50

Something awful happening to William and his three children!

travelsafar Wed 07-Feb-24 12:36:44

Just read something about a prediction from Nostradarmus ... excuse spelling if wrong. It's saying Harry will be king not William if anything happens to King Charles!!!! Anyone else read this??? Media gone mad surely!!!!

It's good that some GNs are able to report rapid NHS diagnosis and cancer treatments and that the King's cancer was identified but the overall NHS picture is not good after 14 years of the present government.

The House of Commons Library which prepares research reports for MPs on a politically neutral basis has very recently found (quote)

'The 62-day waiting time standard for cancer treatment (measured from urgent GP referral) has not been met in recent years. Performance declined between 2013 and 2018. Since the pandemic it has fallen further. In September 2023, 59.3% of patients waited under 62 days for treatment after an urgent GP referral, compared with an target of 85%.' Taking other routes into account success in meeting the target is 'about 60%'. Some hospital trusts are much worse than others.

The above does not address time waiting to get a diagnosis which depends on diagnostic tests, scans, etc. The current backlog for such tests is about 1.6 million patients and 'after a dip in the waiting list during the early stages of the pandemic, there was an unusual rise from 2021 onwards'. The backlog has risen year on year since 2010. Of course the backlog includes tests for all problems, not only cancer, but it is worrying to say the least.

Sunak claimed in an interview that things are improving but the evidence does not seem to support that.

If you want to read the summary report it is at commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-7281/ and it contains a link to the full report.

Like the stress Charles caused Harrys mother .... and the rest. People have short memories when it comes to this family.

Like the stress caused by Harry’s mother to several wives

Bluebell well said. My DH is going into Christy’s tomorrow for a serious cancer op. Thankfully he was diagnosed early.

Callistemon21 Wed 07-Feb-24 12:12:37

Germanshepherdsmum

You don’t sit on an NHS waiting list for months, let alone years, if cancer is suspected or diagnosed.

You have to get past the GP's receptionist first, of course.
