It’s just been on the news that Charles has cancer and is not taking any duties for now

Judy54 Tue 06-Feb-24 14:35:33

My thoughts and prayers are with the King and Queen as well as other members of the royal family at this difficult time.

Whiff so much sorrow

kittylester a positive, that’s wonderful, I am a native and can
certainly swear in Welsh

ronib Tue 06-Feb-24 14:27:25

whiff Surely each person has a different approach to dealing with cancer? My friend is not going to public places and is confining the number of visitors.
It’s possible to stay in touch with family via video call. I also think it might be traumatic for Megan and her two children to visit the UK. There may or may not be unfinished business but King Charles has other priorities now.
Maybe your family was spared the dysfunctional family which is part and parcel of royal life so was more relaxed about seeing grandchildren and in laws?

When my DH was having treatment for an enlarged prostate they discovered bladder cancer. His was operated on had not spread to the muscle so required no further treatment.

I was bilingual in Welsh and English till I was 5 - apparently I could swear like a native.

💐Whiff

Smileless2012 Tue 06-Feb-24 13:36:30

I wondered that too GSM; I hope not sad.

Whiff Tue 06-Feb-24 13:34:30

Today is the 20th anniversary of my husband's death. Until he was terminal only me and our children knew. When he was terminal he welcomed anyone who didn't treat him differently . That included very young family members. Because they just treated him as Uncle W. Not the man with cancer.

No body needs to tell me how hard it living with cancer . We always knew my husband wouldn't live 5 years he lived 3 . My mom had breast cancer twice and having young ones about made her feel better.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 06-Feb-24 13:26:36

I wondered if the type of cancer might not have been disclosed because it’s one that doesn’t have a good prognosis. I sincerely hope not and wish His Majesty a swift and full recovery.

Smileless2012 Tue 06-Feb-24 13:18:10

I hope he keeps the conversations private too eazybee. He may not get another chance if he doesn't.

MissAdventure Tue 06-Feb-24 12:29:51

And that'll be wrong, I'm sure.

eazybee Tue 06-Feb-24 12:26:40

I hope Harry visits swiftly, talks with his father and his family at length, then Keeps It Private. Left to his own devices, I think he will.

Terri i was cross when I saw just one episode of The Crown
they protrayed the Queen not crying when she came to Aberfan, she did, I saw her leave a house where she had sat for
quite some time, and she viewed the graves, she cried.

Charles went to Aberystwyth university for a term, there he was taught by a Welsh Nationalist, which was rather amusing,

The only Prince of Wales to learn Welsh, and he really does
speak Welsh

That really came across in The Crown, which I know you aren't a fan of Annie, but in this one particular episode, a well known Welsh actor, sorry can't remember his name, but he was in both Keeping Faith and Stella (very excellent Welsh based series) was his reluctant mentor who Charles won over by his determination to speak and imbue himself in Welsh culture as well as the language. It really appeared to matter to the young Charles that learning Welsh was an important facet of being Prince of Wales, I think he was sincere in how seriously he took that role.

I tried to learn Welsh once (I had a Welsh boyfriend). I found it really difficult, and generally I’m good at languages.

Good luck to the King. I know several people with cancer diagnoses who are still alive and kicking many years on, so I wish the media would stop implying he’s about to drop dead any second (unless they know something we don’t).

I felt extremely sad when I heard the news. I think King Charles is a kind and caring human being. He genuinely cares so much for the environment. I wish him a full recovery and a long reign.

Sparklefizz, you’re correct, no one deserves this. I expect Merlotgran shares that view and was simply sympathising that KC has faced lots of challenges and would benefit from a quiet spell
So would I and so would many others on gransnet who share small bits of the ups and downs in their lives. I’ve found the emphasis on early diagnosis and treatment a tough listen. My husband was 3 months before diagnosis then 8 weeks before treatment. We increasingly fall behind other wealthy countries. Dare we hope that the NHS will be boosted as the King’s cancer treatment hopefully succeeds. It’s evidently been caught early and treatment started already
I may need to stress - this reflection isn’t a criticism of KC or his medical team

It's good that Harry is coming. Often things like this lead to family reconciliation. Sad but true
I think it's fine he comes alone. When my mum was really ill, it's her immediate family she wanted close.

Does anybody merlotgran?

I agree Anniebach

I agree as well. My first thought was, He doesn’t deserve this!

crazyH Tue 06-Feb-24 10:34:14

I agree Anniebach

There are bound to be comments about H&M. It would be very odd if people just stopped. Hopefully any reports will now focus on the positive. Harry is on his way to see his father and anyone who has suffered estrangement or any family discord would be rejoicing not nit picking.

There’s a long way to go and some serious wounds to heal but this could be a start.

I hope so, merlotgran.

I am distressed , no member of the royal family has endured as
much criticism lies and mocking as Charles . I thought he
had reached a peaceful time in his life.
I don’t know him, I have met him several times since his investiture in 1969 , a gentle, kind man

I agree Anniebach.
I think he's a thoughtful man.
Perhaps he's a worrier, I don't know, and he has had a lot of stress lately.

This is a family, facing the news that their loved father, brother, father-in-law, grandfather, uncle, is ill and facing possibly gruelling treatment.
All in the glare of publicity and unpleasant comments from people who don't know him, only what they read in the media.

Rishi was in there like lightening, speaking on 5Live. His PR people were quick off the mark - here we go......

The PM couldn’t ignore King Charles III’s announcement…

mae13 We have a Constitutional Monarchy in this country!!
How do you think it works?

🤔

ronib Tue 06-Feb-24 10:25:31

Now the big question for me is do I send him a Get Well card?
Would he even notice if I did? Would it help? Maybe not…..
