Should Starmer sue Sunak?

I noticed Sunak has repeated his nonsense in PMQs about Starmer and those he defended as a Barrister.

Sunak recently voiced the same nonsense in an interview with Piers Morgan. By doing so, he opened himself up to being sued. Thus also opened up the broadcaster.the

My question is, why does he keep repeating it? Does he see his supporters as so thick and stupid that they don't understand the cab rank rule for Barristers? Is he really that out of touch?

I feel he must be as he couldn't see how crass a £1,000 bet on the lives of asylum seekers would look, nor could he see how hurtful his transgender jibe would be to Brianna Ghey's mother, who was sitting in the gallery at PMQs.

Why was it inopportune ? It had been spoken of before ,

Should Starmer sue Sunak?

Well, no, because he was in fact correct in what he said.
But it wasn't the time or place just at the moment.

I’m reading through the thread and trying to understand what has happened because I’ve not seen it, but I can’t understand why or what Starmer should sue Sunak for.
I don’t like Sunak, but I don’t like Starmer either, mainly because I went off him when he refused to say what a woman is. Prior to that I thought he was okay, but dull, but okay.

I used to think Starmer might be ok (dull, as you say, but steady) but he did make an idiot of himself with his statements about what is a woman.

Sunak has just made an idiot of himself by bringing that up at an inopportune time.

Smileless2012 I agree with your post

Smileless2012 Thu 08-Feb-24 10:45:06

I disagree Lizzie he listed 10 points that KS has been unable or unwilling to fully commit too, and one of those was not being prepared to define what a woman is.

That had nothing to do with this terrible tragedy and it was KS who made it so. IMO he's scored an own goal and has shown himself in a very bad light.

No under no circumstances. Cause upset what are you talking about. Talking about the rape statistics causes me upset, talking about poverty causes me upset. If you talk about difficult issues you are going to upset someone . (Sunak was making no contribution to debate but that's not the point).

Must every MP check if anything in her/his speech causes upset?

Yes!

LizzieDrip Thu 08-Feb-24 09:55:28

Starmer has whipped this up to score political points.

Which is exactly what Sunak was doing by making the transgender jibe in the first place!

LizzieDrip Thu 08-Feb-24 09:49:05

All MPs on all sides of the house should stop behaving like children, hurling insults at each other and get on with what they’re paid for, looking after the country!

👏👏👏 Agreed Cossy.

I knew about the principle too Callistemon but had never heard that term, which is why I googled it.

This interview with Sam Coates is worth watching, it explains what happened and the consequences.

It’s what happens in Parliament , think of Ny Bevan,
Dennis Skinner and others

Callistemon21 Wed 07-Feb-24 23:07:05

Anniebach

When in the future can this be spoken of ?

I suppose a reasoned discussion if the subject arises, not a jibe thrown out in a mocking manner.

Transgender issues are far more serious than that.

Casdon Wed 07-Feb-24 23:04:51

Galaxy

We cant organise legislation or run debate in that way casdon. We just cant.

I agree, I wasn’t suggesting that. In a discussion on Gransnet though I don’t think it should be disregarded.

Yes and its not a subject for jokes, its important and impacts on the safeguarding of women and children. Starmer actually seems to have understood that lately, labour have been clear recently on the importance of single sex spaces for example.

I’m not surprised. The number of people who criticise barristers for defending people charged with very unpleasant offences shows that the rule is not widely known, which doesn’t surprise me - and unlike the poster above I don’t consider them ‘thick and stupid’.

Well, I knew the principle.
I've met barristers through work.
But not heard that particular term before.

So I must be thick and stupid

I went off Starmer when he refused to say what a woman is.
And Sunak was really stupid to use that as an insult at this particular time.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 07-Feb-24 22:55:07

He probably wouldn’t have thought about it without Starmer’s ‘assistance’. Starmer has whipped this up to score political points.

Casdon Wed 07-Feb-24 22:53:14

Read what Brianna’s father said. Whatever the rest of us think about this, it is Sunak he is upset by, and surely that counts.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 07-Feb-24 22:49:41

No it didn’t. Starmer has chosen to make it about her. I hope Sunak doesn’t apologise. He has nothing to apologise for.

Galaxy Wed 07-Feb-24 22:48:22

This issue impacts women, children, it covers a wide range of legislation, and is being discussed in every country in the world.
I have no interest in what Sunak said but it's an issue that will continue to be discussed.

Smileless2012 Wed 07-Feb-24 22:47:21

I agree GSM it was Starmer who used Brianna to try to shame RS and score a point. KS didn't refer to Brianna, KS did so he's the one who be ashamed.

KS's jibe was about Starmer's unwillingness to define what a woman is, it had nothing to do with Brianna.

Sunak has accepted a £1000 bet with Piers Morgan about planes going to Rwanda.
