Trump says he would 'encourage' Russia to attack Nato allies who do not pay their bills

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-68266447

Most people now recognise that Russia helped Trump to be elected in 2016. Trump is Putin's puppet, his "useful idiot"

Trump is totally unhinged and yet still has a huge cult following.

But the world is now an even more dangerous place than it was in 2016. We cannot let him and his brainwashed followers triumph again.

I think the Donald's threat over nonpayment is unhinged. Of course none/underpayment has been an issue for years but his cack-handed comment puts us all at greater risk. I hope Taylor Swift does endorse Biden.

if taylor swift comes out as a trump supporter then all is lost

I can't understand why American Superbowl and Taylor Swift have to be on our national news all the time!!
Are most people here at all interested for it to be on UK national news?

Neither of the potential candidates is good for USA or the world. One wonders how the leading Western Democracy could not find better politicians than Biden or Trump to be President. Unfortunately, Kamala Harris has been unimpressive in her role as Vice President if you read about US politics.
I just cannot understand why Jill Biden does not persuade President Biden to stand down. I feel so sorry for him but he really is now too old to be President. Trump is no statesman but I do not blame Americans for thinking that the rest of the free world needs to pay their dues to NATO and to up their defence spending. My American friends in the Dog Rescue world do not have it easy. Medical, and dental care is very expensive and many middle class Americans are like UK families just getting by and hoping things will improve. They deserve better leadership.

Germany heard Trumps comment about not spending enough on defence, they announced an increase in munitions manufacture because stocks have run short.

Do insurance companies pay out if your bill isnt paid? Do the RAC/AA turn up on a dark winter's night when you arnt a paid up member?
A bit simplistic but much the same.

BTW, I'm being lazy here, but does anyone (op maybe?) have clear proof of Trumps and Russia collusion?
I've lost touch with it all.

At the end of the cold war Russia and US gradually reduced the armaments facing each other in Europe to the extent that war was not a realistic possibility. But then Ukraine started to want more western freedoms and strategically important Crimea was annexed. Then further moves towards the West caused Russia to feel insecure and Ukraine was invaded, it was a half hearted campaign, neither side had the weaponry to fight a war with any determination.

That has now changed Russian has much more capability and NATO is still rationing arms supply to Ukraine, furthermore, sanctions on Russia has proved totally ineffective. They are receiving help from many other countries that need their oil and others that need their armaments.

If only Ukraine had stayed neutral it could all have been different, focus is on Gaza currently that will change soon enough when full scale fighting in Ukraine starts again.

Trump is a deranged narcissistic psychopath. So is Putin. Only Putin is much cleverer and is manipulating the orange muppet. That the American population cannot see this is beyond alarming. So I may as well eat that bar of chocolate for who knows what tomorrow holds.

icanhandthemback Wed 14-Feb-24 11:08:57

Quite interesting that Trump should make this sort of statement more or less when Putin had agreed to be interviewed on US television by Tucker Carlson.

Grantanow Wed 14-Feb-24 11:15:21

He's a lunatic and I hope he is not elected because he does do what he threatens.

Amalegra Wed 14-Feb-24 11:24:16

What a choice! Trump or Biden (if he stands). Two old men, one dangerous, albeit well supported, the other clearly demonstrating the onset of old age. Both vying to lead the most powerful nation on earth. And I thought our choice of leadership candidates was poor! I despair.

Smileless2012 Wed 14-Feb-24 11:31:40

It's frightening isn't it Amalegra and all we can do is watch.

recent radio4 prog talked about the danger of a civil war in the usa, far fetched? if trump gets in most likely. the world at the moment is more volatile than it has been in living memory.

Cagsy Wed 14-Feb-24 11:39:38

I think Putin has scared many countries into paying their 2% at least, not the orange man - he just haunts our worst nightmares

Goldieoldie15 Wed 14-Feb-24 11:40:15

And a lot of people still refuse to recognise that Russia helped to “get Brexit done”. And look how it benefitted from it.

montymops Wed 14-Feb-24 11:41:18

The trouble is that many NATO members do not pay their dues. The UK does pay its fair share. Perhaps in peace time it hasn’t seemed necessary to some of the others. It must seem to the USA that many countries just expect them to come to their rescue. This is hardly fair - On the other hand, the USA has often rushed in where ‘angels fear to tread’ I don’t like Trump at all - but Europe should contribute properly.

Babamaman Wed 14-Feb-24 11:53:18

I’m afraid !
I don’t know where this world is going with its insane leaders!
Nowhere is safe! Not one country has a decent leader or government!
Lessons from all wars, millions dead have definitely not been learnt!
Afraid very afraid 😢

Yes, as a business man he has a good point about members paying their way. However the rhetoric about inviting Russia to invade was crass to say the least.

(Now I'm worried - I've agreed with both Trump and Michael Gove in the space of a couple of days; must be something in the water!)

Trump is a FAILED businessman. He has only been successful in acquiring more debt with his businesses and then declaring bankruptcy. Don’t give him credit fot none deserved.

Nannan2 Wed 14-Feb-24 12:13:29

I thought they were trying to get Michelle Obama to run for presidency? Would be a winner probably, as her husband was so popular- and as a coloured lady president would be a great big 'first'.Might be time for a huge change America.🤔

Nannan2 Wed 14-Feb-24 12:14:14

She has also been a good businesswoman.

Jess20 Wed 14-Feb-24 12:31:53

If we take this another way, what right does a country have to protection from NATO if it deliberately runs down it's defense capability and relies on others to pick up the slack? Trump has a horrible way of putting things but he may have a point if NATO members aren't pulling their weight. Don't get me wrong this is a horrible and unhinged person who is stirring up as much anger and hatred as possible to fuel his campaign, probably someone who is already rather too closely allied to Russia for comfort. Looks as if he's trying to break any 'special relationship' America has had with the UK or Europe in the past - he's very clear on that.... 'America first'! Our UK armed forces and general readiness for conflict aren't in a good place, looking like we're even losing the ability to make steel now - definitely not in a good place to respond if there is a war.

knspol Wed 14-Feb-24 12:31:55

Unless a more plausible democrat stands for election in place of Biden then it's completely possible that Trump will be the next president, a dire situation for the world.
What I find truly frightening is that US friends who are well educated who I have always thought of as sensible, level headed people are Trump supporters apparently because they think he is great for the US economy and will always put the US first

Josie883 Wed 14-Feb-24 12:37:56

That is just your own opinion. Not a fact.

TanaMa Wed 14-Feb-24 12:44:04

I find the thought of Trump being re-elected quite frightening, as I do of Biden serving another term. However, I also feel worried that most of my American friends are looking to Trump being the American 'saviour' in a 'second coming'!!

If fraud, lying, cheating and failing to pay your taxes together with 5-6 of your businesses filing for bankruptcy make you a good businessman - then Trump is excellent.😄

He pretends well at being a good businessman. Maybe that's what I meant?! Haha. But only having the choice between him and Biden would terrifying me!!
