The last elections for the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) were held on 25 January 2006. There have not been any elections either for president or for the legislature since these two elections.

Consider why there haven't been elections. The main reason seems to be that Hamas would have won a massive victory and this was unacceptable to many, including the Palestinian president, other countries and Israel. I wonder is it OK to disenfranchise people because you don't like their choices?

The reason is the differences between Fatah and Hamas which has resulted in delayed elections since the last one in 2006.

I’m sure you’d the first to own Urmstongran that all parties have rogue elements regardless of how rigorously attempts to reform are made. Those elements emerging unexpectedly is a political reality all parties face. What is important is tackling them when they do emerge.

The Arab -Israeli war only began after Israel had massacred, raped and driven from their homes thousands of Palestinians, when Arab states decided intervention was necessary. The intervention failed and Israel expanded occupying more territory.
There is international law which prevents the acquisition of territory by war. The original borders assigned by the UN have never been abided by. In 1948 the UN passed a resolution saying that Palestinians should be allowed to return to the land they had been driven from. Israel of course never complied.
The people in Gaza are the descendents of those people.

I live over the pennies, in another former proud town that, like Bradford helped build the country from the industrial revolution till the 1980s when manufacturing, engineering, etcc disappeared. It left many towns with names beginning with B desolate\\

With regard to Bradford - I researched my family on my grandfathers side, and discovered that they were weavers in Haworth and later with the Industrial Revolution moved to the mill town of Bradford.

I recently spent time tracing them from Haworth to Bradford. 😮😮😮 I must say I was pretty shocked at what I saw in the area in Bradford in which my ancestors lived. They were a middle class family at the beginning of the last century with servants etc, living a good life from what I could gather - but now the area is terribly poverty stricken, with people from Asia clearly finding life pretty hard. I was saddened to see it.

Whitewave, ‘people from Asia’ may well be relatives of the largely Pakistani Muslim communities who were invited to work in our mills. They had much needed skills. Life is tough for many in our former mill towns, including mine. In the late 70’s early 80’s when I was a newly qualified sw, it was rare for me to be involved with a family where no one worked. By the 90’s it was rare to have families who didn’t rely on benefits

The former Labour candidate in his constituency was one of the protestors, threatening Ellwood.

She held a placard saying “Tobias Ellwood you can’t hide you’re complicit in genocide.”

Police did not intervene.

Ellwood was the MP who tried to save PC Keith Palmer when he was stabbed in 2017 at the terrorist attack in Westminster.
PC Keith Palmer was posthumously awarded the George Medal.

This is becoming very disturbing indeed.

It was an in depth documentary about Bradford as it is now, am sure it used to be a good place to live a long time ago.
Apologies if anyone here lives there or nearby, but yes as you say it really does look a desolate place and very depressing.
Lots of huge council estates and high levels of petty crime, and not so petty, and high levels of immigration from India and Pakistan which have changed the nature of the city.It’s not alone I know, many other towns and cities have changed too.
In the news again this week the awful shooting of two female police officers there, which happened a few years ago.

Callistemon21 I saw the footage of the angry mob outside Tobias Ellwood’s house,his family must be living in fear. I know that free speech is essential in our democracy, but this is taking things too far.

It makes me ponder on why anyone would want to stand for MP in the next election.

We have an MP in our extended family (often doing the morning news round) we would all be relieved if they stood down.

Police did not intervene

There is the nub of the problem Calli. Tobias Ellwood’s family must have been terrified. A call to 999 was definitely warranted. Why on earth did the Police not respond? Ignoring these protesters (shame on that Labour would-be MP who stood against TE in the latest election) gives them and their ilk the green light, surely?

I find it shocking that police didn’t move on the threatening pro Palestinian group outside his house, when he and his sons were actually in the house.What has to happen before something even more serious takes place?!
