Ukraine family scheme quietly closed today!

I know that here in Scotland those already here have been granted permission to stay for another 18 months. Haven't heard about new incomers though, although we are helping Afghanistans get settled here.

I thought that the govt had extended the period for visas for Ukranians for a further 18 months. Perhaps they just meant those already here.

I loath this govt.- we as a country ought to be able to help the Ukrainians to a safe place if they wanted to come here. But the state of the country and the lack of housing for native Brits has caused some people to forget their humanity.

I have just had a very quick look, and it seems that Ukrainian refugees already here can no longer get family members to join them unless they have a sponsor who is a U.K. citizen.

Can anyone else confirm/deny I have understood this correctly.

The problem though is if true,this means only those who can afford to financially sponsor can help - but still better than totally closing the door.

These are TRUE refugees which need our help. I am disgusted that our government have seen fit to do this, especially considering the massive uncontrolled immigration at present. Students bringing in numerous family members, the small boats with thousands of migrants not properly controlled or checked and costing us millions to the detriment of our failing public services. I think this country has gone mad and I am angry that we can’t seem to do much about it! Giving Ukrainians a place here is the very least we can do for this brave country and her citizens.

Such a pity these poor Ukranians are no longer eligible to come to the UK while others just turn up.
I volunteer at a FoodBank and you would not believe the amount of oversees Indian 'students' accessing free food with their numerous relatives in tow. It's gone through the roof even since Christmas. I thought, to be an international student in another country, you had to show you were financially viable to be able to fund yourself whilst in that country.
Not any more. Its putting increasing pressure on FoodBanks to have enough stock for everyone.
It's a classic case of the Right Hand not knowing what the Left Hand is doing.
The various Foodbank agencies who issue what are called 'E' numbers are doing so without any background checks.
Once a client arrives at the Foodbank, if they have an E number, we have to give them the food.

Think about our young English people who can’t even get a social rented property or afford to buy because of the over crowding of our small island
Also the 18 plus Ukraine should be helping their country with the war effort

start the compulsory enlistment of our
18 plus, how many overseas residents will be in that procedure?

At the present time there are 9000 Ukraine families homeless. The government restricted the Ukraines from sponsoring their family and friends because the family and friends are immediately reporting to the council that they are homeless the sponsor will not house them. So what does the government do? do you want them to continue putting these families into hotels, or accessing social housing whilst there are also UK citizens that are homeless. There is a reason to why the government has stopped it. The Ukraines can still get British, Irish or citizens with ILR to sponsor them

No value judgement intended but I am struck by how rare it is for someone using our food bank to have English as a first language. We do not assess people and anyone can turn up. The bank has a good atmosphere with everyone mainly being courteous. I’m left wondering why it is pretty much only used by those who seem relatively new to this country and how they feel about using a food bank. It must contradict the hopes they came to this country with.

A young woman and her daughter had been in my area since the beginning has decided to go back home as she is missing her husband and her family.

GrannyGravy13 Yes, that's true. Ukrainians in Ukraine who have family here under the sponsorship scheme will no longer be able to join them. There was zero contingency plan for when the sponsorship finished. The government basically told sponsor families that they either carried on sponsoring them or had to make them homeless.

Get a grip. Many, many of these people are women, their parents and their children. "some" men have joined later. Sorry to see you missed the Compassion Bus.

And as for the children who were sent to war in the last century, as a nation we should be ashamed. It was put to them that they were doing a wonderful and brave thing for their country. It was anything but that.

We had a Ukrainian family live with us for 8 months. They are now in a private rental close by. Dad works full time, Mum 2 days a week at the weekends and the 2 young children are at school. We remain in close contact and view them as 'family'. Dad was working in Poland when the war broke and decided with 2 pre schoolers that he would not return to Ukraine and risk losing his life fighting. So his family left Ukraine and joined him initially in Poland.

I knew about the further eighteen months for Ukrainians already here, but I had no idea until I saw this thread, that no further Ukrainians can come unless sponsored by a British citizen.
I am absolutely disgusted with this new rule. People from virtually every country in the world have made their homes here in the UK and many of them have fled from repression and war. Just how is it moral to say people from one country, in the grip of the most terrible war, you are not welcome. What does that say about us and Britain. It makes me ashamed.

It's UK run so yes, the Scottish Super Visa scheme was quietly stopped in 2022 due to the inability to house the all the applicants - 1000 ended up on a rented ferry, they were all found alternative accommodation last year.
