Ukraine - two years on

Apparently it’s two years ago today since the war in Ukraine started. What a sad anniversary. So many people displaced, killed, murdered and raped. And no end in sight. Just to please a man who isn’t fit to walk the earth in my opinion.

I agree about the deafening silence about Ukraine and it bothers me.
I’ve just read an excellent article on Ukraine in The Guardian. It’s called A Train Through Ukraine, and it’s well worth reading. It’s evocative though because it explains the sheer exhaustion of the soldiers who are fighting for freedom.

Iam 😁

I’m very saddened by the plight of these brave and innocent Ukrainians! I am also very concerned about the poor Afganistans left behind for the Taliban to punish and penalise.

For me all War is an utter tragedy and there are no winners. There’s also other wars continuing in other countries about which we hear nothing.

I too wish Putin a painful awful death!

My heart goes out to all innocents caught up in awful warfare regardless of their colour/dread/beliefs, especially children, babies and the elderly!

A friend's SIL is driving out there yet again with supplies and bringing refugees out.
He said the way people are living is horrendous. Surviving, not living.

Putin is evil personified. Why does history throw up these murderous megalomaniacs from time to time?

Meanwhile we are inadvertently buying oil from Russia www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-68018660#:~:text=Millions%20of%20barrels%20of%20fuel,products%20sold%20to%20the%20UK.

I don’t wish Putin dead. I have a lot of evil ideas that would leave him alive but severely incapacitated and therefore completely dependent on other people 😡

Message from King Charles III to Ukraine

Callistemon21 Sat 24-Feb-24 14:34:42

Well said Charles. A heartfelt message.

I too feel as though Ukraine has been "put on the back burner"and people are forgetting what a danger Putin is to the west. The US can't get the aid to Ukraine through Congress and seem to not be fazed by the fact that China are watching carefully what is happening in this war.
It seems obvious that if Russia win they will not stop at Ukraine.

maddyone Sat 24-Feb-24 15:24:08

I agree, well said King Charles.
But words, although inspiring, are not enough. We need to continue to support Ukraine in every way possible and I have to say I’m extremely disappointed by the hold ups in aid to the Ukraine by the politicians in the USA.
AGAA4 is right, Putin poses a huge threat to the west and I think this is not properly acknowledged. We should be pouring money into Ukraine because they are fighting for the whole of Europe.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 24-Feb-24 16:12:12

We simply can’t afford to allow Putin to prevail in Ukraine.

The republicans are refusing to play ball over the $60billion for funding and if Trump gets in we can kiss Ukraine good bye unless Europe steps up - which it must do to save its interest and skin!

Macron in a speech this week failed to say that he would rule out putting French troops into Ukraine. He also said that France is prepared to provide leadership in a more active NATO involvement in Ukraine. None military fly zones being established were discussed as well as tackling Russia's cyber warfare. The U.K. would be in a good place to tackle this cyber warfare.

There's been a lot about Ukraine on the news. I guess it depends where you look, it's rarely not covered by the BBC and the last two weeks there's been a play and numerous special programmes or interviews. I'm pleased the EU has announced increased funding and assurances that support will be ongoing for as long as the war continues. ( On radio 4 this morning) . I think the general public respond to drama and the endless grind of this war is therefore less newsworthy to some outlets but all the sources I use are reporting on a regular basis.

maddyone Tue 27-Feb-24 10:25:12

Yes Vintagewhine, there has been increased coverage very recently because of the two year anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine. With the events in Israel/Gaza, Ukraine was knocked off the agenda but this last few days has been much more in the news.
Ukraine needs to be in the news because the Ukrainians need to win. I’m frightened of the possibility of Trump becoming President in America, because there are already some politicians in the USA who wish to stop funding the Ukrainians and I think Trump will not help them at all. They need our support because if Putin wins, whatever happens next will not be good for Europe. Europe will no longer be safe.

Israel is working to supply Ukraine with early warning systems to repel Russian missile and drone attacks, Israel's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan confirmed.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 28-Feb-24 17:26:57

Well done Israel 👏👏👏

Grannyme6 Wed 28-Feb-24 18:13:36

Like other posters, I’m very concerned for Ukraine and am frustrated that some countries seem to have lost sight of the ‘bigger picture’ and the urgent need to fully support Ukraine in their struggle against Putin and his regime. Two years on and it’s no less urgent that the West steps up its support.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 29-Feb-24 14:26:41

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has revealed in a speech that U.K. soldiers are in Ukraine helping their armed forces fire the long range missiles we have supplied.

Obviously not the freshest sandwich in the picnic basket!!!

This will put the U.K. further up President Putin’s target list.

On the World At One today Putin was again threatening nuclear war on anyone interfering in Ukraine.
He needs to be stopped. No idea how 😔

AGAA4 Thu 29-Feb-24 15:03:06

Putin has been threatening nuclear war on those who help Ukraine since the war began 2 years ago.

Aveline Thu 29-Feb-24 16:10:53

There's not much we (Grans) can do to help Ukraine other than to send money to the relief agencies. I'm happy to continue to do this.
