BBC reports that Prince William has pulled out of attending Greek funeral for personal reasons… any ideas?

Oh yes, and don't get started on Hayley, Hayleigh, Haley, Hailee!

How do H & M spell their daughter Lily's name? Lily, Lillie, Lili or Lilly?

Anniebach Sun 03-Mar-24 22:26:55

I wouldn’t correct anyone’s spelling, so rude

I seem to recall when their daughter was born, H&M said her name was Lilibet Diana, to be known as Lili.

Re spellings of names. It probably is rude to pick up on poor spelling, but to constantly post names wrongly is just silly, i.e. Katherine instead of Catherine etc.

No one posts ‘Kamilla’ instead of ‘Camilla’, do they?

are people on here so bored that arguing over a name lightens their day!
nothing else on gransnet to post on!

Everyone has a spelling for their first name that is the one they use. It may be the spelling given at birh or one they adapted later, and that spelling is definitive to them.

But as far as names go as a generality, there are no definitive spellings, There are common and traditional spellings - and then the variations.

In my DGD's class at school, at one time, there was an Isobel, Isabel and Isabelle. Same name, different spellings, the first one is usually considered to be the traditional Scottish way of spelling the names, all equally valid.

So (to link back to the thread) Whether the Duchess of Sussex spells her name 'Megan', 'Meghan' or any other version, is a matter of her personal choice and cannot be right or wrong for any reason.

Joseann Mon 04-Mar-24 08:08:13

Seeing as Meghan isn't actually her first name anyway, shall we write Rachael, Rachel, or Rachelle?

I wonder if the Prince and Princess of Wales are concerned that Gary Goldsmith (Catherine’s uncle) is rumoured to be going into the Celebrity Big Brother house this evening.

So sorry I have caused the forum police to come out in force

You have nothing to be sorry for Anniebach I know you are used to the Welsh spelling. I get it, my given name is a boys name in Wales and spelt the Welsh way, so many people spell it wrong and/or query if I have spelt it correctly.

lemsip Mon 04-Mar-24 09:44:51

Grannygravy13. yes, they are concerned! in the news.

Anniebach Mon 04-Mar-24 09:49:18

GrannyGravy thank you, when Megan first hit the spotlight I did make the unforgivably🙄 mistake of spelling the name same way as in Wales, brought the forum police out in a rage😡
Somethings don’t change

😁

I like the way DGD spelt my name when she was about 6, Perhaps I'll change it to that spelling, that'll confuse everybody.

Anniebach Mon 04-Mar-24 09:50:37

William and Catherine have expressed their concerns?

Anniebach Mon 04-Mar-24 09:54:14

Callistemon perhaps I should refer to Catherine as Cadi , we do for my elder daughter 👍

Well, she is the Princess of Wales, Anniebach 🙂

Anniebach Mon 04-Mar-24 10:09:26

Sooo true Callistemon if Harry was the elder !,! ! ! 😲, the Free Wales Army would have to make a comeback

People should be called by the name they say they wish to be called, whether it is one given to them at birth, or later, or one they choose.

The Duchess of Susse has made it clear what name she wants to be known by and the spelling, so that is the name she should be known by, no other.

Not sure. I guess if he handles it like Mike Tindall did in IACGMOOH, then all will be OK.
(I don't watch BB, so someone will need to let me know).

lemsip Mon 04-Mar-24 13:27:43

Kate Middleton's uncle Gary Goldsmith buys suits at Soho tailor as he prepares to enter the Celebrity Big Brother house having been 'read the riot act' by Princess of Wales's mother over fears he could spill royal secrets
The brother of the Duchess of Cambridge's mother Carole was seen shopping
Goldsmith, 58, has prompted fears he could embarrass the royal family on TV

Smileless2012 Mon 04-Mar-24 13:31:08

He'd need to be off the scale to be worse than H & M. I wonder how worried they are hmm.

NotAGran55 Mon 04-Mar-24 13:46:09

It is ignorant and arrogant to deliberately misspell a name.

Yes it is.

M0nica Mon 04-Mar-24 15:57:35

Quite agree.

Anniebach Mon 04-Mar-24 16:15:17

I don’t agree,
