BBC reports that Prince William has pulled out of attending Greek funeral for personal reasons… any ideas?

So sorry I have caused the forum police to come out in force

This made me grin grin

It is ignorant and arrogant to deliberately misspell a name.

I’m not sure why ANYONE would deliberately misspell someone’s name, or indeed deliberately mispronounce a persons name other than to be rude!

It’s completely different to do it in error though.

I don’t agree,

How about disrespectful, rude and stupid then?

Anniebach Mon 04-Mar-24 18:31:22

I don’t agree

Right then!!

Does anyone know how to pronounce Megan or Meghan please?

Is it Megg-ugh-n as is usual here?
Or, as pronounced in the USA and Australia: Meeg-uh-n?

Or, if it has an 'h' is it Megg-h-uh-n with a very slight pronunciation of the 'h'?

Well, that is exactly what your post is!

Now, what happens if someone is dyslexic?
Is it non-PC to constantly pick them up on their spelling?

(Notice my split infinitive )

MissAdventure Mon 04-Mar-24 20:01:29

I believe the gransnet pronunciation is C.O.W. grin

Please go back and read my original post where you will see the word ‘deliberately’, which is what we are all discussing.

Shall I throw the deliberate calling of Catherine 'Kate' despite her expressed wish to be called Catherine into the mix? The media and posters who are very careful to spell Meghan correctly seem to think nothing of disrespecting Catherine's wishes.

Callistemon21 Mon 04-Mar-24 22:34:58

Ah well, no-one has answered. It's that I wondered how she pronounces it herself.

Anniebach Mon 04-Mar-24 22:49:19

When I made the error of spelling the name I was bullied, I received messages asking me not to cave in to the bullying, even the fact I am Welsh brought ridicule, sadly it is flaring up again

Rosie51 Mon 04-Mar-24 23:08:47

Callistemon I think I've heard Harry say it how we say it but maybe with a slight h in the middle. I've never heard Meghan pronounce her own name, but presumably she's OK with the way Harry has said it. I have heard Catherine respond to a child with "my name's Catherine"

Nobody should have bullied you Anniebach, and to ridicule you for being Welsh is absolutely unacceptable.

Callistemon21 Mon 04-Mar-24 23:15:46

So not Meegan then as Australians pronounce it.

M0nica Tue 05-Mar-24 07:49:39

Anniebach To disagree with someone and explain why is not bullying.

Katie59 Tue 05-Mar-24 08:32:13

I just assumed it was Meghan with a soft “h” not Meg-han with a hard “h”

This is not the same a Catherine and Kate where it is a deliberate diminutive, I’m a Catherine it’s my choice that “Katie” is fine by me, we should all have our own choice of address respected.

oh for goodness sake give the name kerfuffle a rest or start a new thread about all names! try reading news and posting other things for discussion maybe.

I’m just going to add another two pence worth.

To me, GN and the Press should simply call the Princess of Wales ‘Catherine’ (her name), and the Duchess of Sussex ‘Meghan’ (her preferred name).

Not different names or spellings of said names, just that.

Surely after 6 posts it is

M0nica Tue 05-Mar-24 14:32:14

Why would someone change their mind just because they have said it six times.

Now in my 80s I have lived with my first name, my middle name and my married name all being misspelt. I have even spelt my surname out and had it written down wrongly in front of me, TBH it became like water off a duck’s back, although fortunately my children and grandchildren all have easy to spell first names to make up for the surname,

Prince William is dealing with not just his father's illness but now we hear about Catherine's cancer diagnosis...prayers for all of them...the King has said he has remained in close contact...I thought Catherine's video was beautifully shot and authentic

PuddyCat Fri 22-Mar-24 20:38:49

Quite agree Bea65. Let's hope that some of the posters from pages 6 & 7 of this thread are offering similar prayers for Catherine and William (and profuse apologies for their malice).

Blossoming Fri 22-Mar-24 21:57:39

Well I should think it must be obvious now what Prince William’s ‘personal reasons’ were for pulling out of the service.
