George Galloway is the MP for Rochdale

He did refer to some local issues but his campaign was about Palestine-Israel. His win was resounding and his victory speech focussed on telling Keir Starmer his stance on Gaza is a major problem for Labour. Galloway’s latest party is called the the workers party, I think. Will they put up candidates in other northern former mill towns with large communities of people of Muslim fairy? (like my town)

Galaxy Fri 01-Mar-24 14:29:26

What point have they made by electing an anti semitic misogynistic conspiracy theorist.

maddyone Fri 01-Mar-24 14:25:06

I cannot really believe that anybody voted for him. But they did!

maddyone Fri 01-Mar-24 14:22:33

Nobody in the HofC is looking forward to GG’s arrival that’s for sure.

I bet they’re not. He’s an unpleasant and devisive man. I don’t think he’ll have any friends on any side of the house.

Glorianny Fri 01-Mar-24 14:17:49

I think you are right Whitewavemark2 I think there is a significant number of ordinary people who have waited for a political leader to express their disgust at events in Gaza. They voted to make a point.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 01-Mar-24 14:07:41

I’m not sure that it is a Muslim vote but I’m pretty sure it is a protest vote about Gaza.

hpq yes - two sides of the same coin.

Right let's get rid of this is a Muslim vote for a start.
Galloway won 40% of the vote
The population of Rochdale is List 46.9% Christianity 28.8% no religion 18.8% Islam 0.3% Hinduism 0.2% Buddhism 0.1% Judaism 0.1% Sikhism 0.3% other 4.6% not stated
So highly unlikely that it is purely a Muslim victory.
It is a wake up call for Starmer and the LP headquarters. Firstly that he has to stop sitting on the fence about Gaza because people in the UK care about innocent people being slaughtered, and secondly that he has to stop interfering in local LP politics and deciding who can stand. I hope he gets both messages, but I very much doubt he will.

Apparently there is possibly a postal vote scam, 21 votes from 1 address.

Sago you need to distinguish between the town of Rochdale which are the figures you have posted and the constituency of Rochdale which comprises a larger area.

Do you have any evidence for your postal scam allegation?

HousePlantQueen Fri 01-Mar-24 13:53:30

Rather like a belt going around a person, the extreme right and extreme left meet in the middle. Both vile, both unacceptable. The one good thing to come out of last night's farrago of a by election is that Tice's gang failed dismally, which is presumably why he is making allegations of mobs outside.

Nobody in the HoC is looking forward to GG's arrival that's for sure.

I think that was Richard Tice’s post on ‘X’.
GG denies this.
He says ‘ask the Police’ as there is no proof.

I too read this in Twitter/X, it is Tice's post, word for word.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 01-Mar-24 13:37:46

I have just seen this on X and had to share.

CoolCoco

Hopefully he won’t be an MP for very long. I don’t think Gaza will be a major issue in a GE- it will be more domestic issues - health, the economy, education etc etc

So it should be,otherwise to UK will find itself on a very slippery slope. Domestic problems should always be forefront of our Parliament.

Grandmabatty Fri 01-Mar-24 13:33:50

He's a horrible man and most Scots had his measure years ago.

Nicenanny3 Fri 01-Mar-24 12:59:05

Actually I've just looked at the video on Daily Mail he said "Keir Starmer this is for Gaza"

Anniebach Fri 01-Mar-24 12:56:58

He certainly did say ‘this is for *Gaza’

Nicenanny3 Fri 01-Mar-24 12:53:10

After he won GG said "This is for Gaza" couldn't be more plain than that.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 01-Mar-24 12:50:37

So are you saying that it was purely a protest vote? GG has no policies or manifesto.

Glorianny Fri 01-Mar-24 12:48:20

The three main political parties all did badly in this election. GG and an Independent candidate had over 60% of the votes. This isn't just about Gaza it is a wake up call for all the main parties.

karmalady Fri 01-Mar-24 12:33:26

ghetto has had consequences. GG has no thought at all about doing anything to actually help the people of Rochdale

He will try to be utterly divisive in the uk. I have just decided to abandon my thought of voting for remain and will vote conservative in order to keep the uk British, as was

Anniebach Fri 01-Mar-24 12:30:59

I fear the impact on the U.K, he gave interviews after the result
and condemned Starmer

Whitewavemark2 Fri 01-Mar-24 12:30:54

Galaxy

That's going well for you then.

Sorry?

Galaxy Fri 01-Mar-24 12:25:58

There is now an anti semitic conspiracy theorist as an MP, oh and if anyone wants his views on women they could Google 'not every insertion requires permission'.
There will be zero impact on the situation in Gaza because of this vote, the impact however on the UK may be unpleasant to watch.

Anniebach Fri 01-Mar-24 12:25:38

Galloway can’t change anything in Gaza,

petra Fri 01-Mar-24 12:23:12

maddyone

It does puzzle me. He’s vile. Why would anyone vote for a vile person?
I agree with you Galaxy about the minimisation of the degree of antisemitism on the marches, and elsewhere actually, but I still wonder why anyone would vote for him. It is purely the Muslim vote?

I would hazard a guess that the majority of people who voted for him have never heard of him.

Galaxy Fri 01-Mar-24 12:21:30
