George Galloway is the MP for Rochdale

He did refer to some local issues but his campaign was about Palestine-Israel. His win was resounding and his victory speech focussed on telling Keir Starmer his stance on Gaza is a major problem for Labour. Galloway’s latest party is called the the workers party, I think. Will they put up candidates in other northern former mill towns with large communities of people of Muslim fairy? (like my town)

He was anniebach all he does is stir up resentment as he did in Leeds? Bradford? When he won there in the past. It’s what he feeds on, antisemitism.

Glorianny Fri 01-Mar-24 09:23:57

So instead of posting islamophobic tropes show me the evidence tat it would be possible to get 40% of the vote by appealing either to muslims or the far left. Either we are the majority. In which case suck it up. Ora good proportion of people who would have voted for Labour have gone for Galloway. The two reasons I gave above being the deciding factors.
Prove your point or stop posting Islamophobia.

Anniebach Fri 01-Mar-24 09:24:33

Oreo there are threads here covering his previous vile campaigns

And people criticised Lee Anderson re London and Khan, seems the same has happened in Rochdale.

"Can see the uproar on gransnet if he had been right wing."
I've yet to see one supportive comment for GG, he's a vile divisive self populist, driven by his ego and totally without morals. He's used a situation for his own benefit. I am most definitely not a supporter of Reform but that doesn't make me a supporter of a vile anti semite who happens to be left wing. fwiw, I don't want to be represented by anyone or any party that appeals to the worst in people or uses racist language whether they are on the right or the left or sitting dead centre!

The most significant feature of the Rochdale by election is not who won or where their vote came from.

The most significant feature of the Rochdale by election is that more than 60% of the electorate didn't bother to vote.

Despite Glorianny's rallying call, the wake up call is not to any particular party on any particular cause. It is to all the parties to alert them to the danger of an electorate that is so alienated from the democratic process that the majority of people in a critical well publicised by-election like this cannot be bothered, or actively choose not to vote.

Here is a link to voter turnout over the last century www.statista.com/statistics/1050929/voter-turnout-in-the-uk/. The 2016 peak was the Brexit referendom, not a general election. Already voter turnout has dropped to close to two thirds of the electorate, and I am sure it will be lower in the 2024 election.

At what point can it be said that the results of an election no longer reflect the choices of the electorate.

I currently think that if 'none of the above' was added as a voting choice on the ballot paper, voter turnout would increase and votes for 'none of the above' would probably exceed the number of votes cast for any specific political party.

Apparently Tice contacted Galloway and invited him to join the Reform party - Galloway maintains that he has written evidence.

The one consolation I have is that there is nobody else ‘of his ilk’. He’s a dangerous self publicist, and will do his best to cause havoc in parliament - but he is a weak man at heart, I don’t believe that he genuinely believes in anything except bolstering his own ego. I’m with Urmstongran in that the cat incident has irrevocably damaged any credibility he had.

Glorianny I can only assume that you haven’t seen/heard any of Mr. Galloway’s campaign speeches or his interview on breakfast news.

He deliberately canvassed the Asian anti Israel vote, not how you can claim Islamophobic tropes

Rubbish spreading untruths again.

I would be very surprised due to Mr. Galloway’s left leaning politics, he has nothing in common with Reform.

Probably just more of GG’s self publicity…

George Galloway - vile man.

Rubbish spreading untruths again.

I’m repeating what Galloway said in an interview.

Of course I would be astounded if it were so, but honestly nothing surprises me about any of the parties at the extreme of politics.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 01-Mar-24 09:34:51

He is the living embodiment of a loose cannon. I wouldn't give him a job clearing my gutters, never mind having a say in government decisions.

Sorry but I don't believe you.

Urmstongran Fri 01-Mar-24 09:36:20

GG says he will publish Tice’s invitations if he persists in denying he was contacted to join Reform UK. I’ve got my popcorn at the ready …

Well now, that’s the million pound question isn’t it?😂

I always enjoyed the way he sorted out those Americans in a court case some years ago now. He's very articulate. Will view his behaviour in parliament with interest.

I agree, he just revels in being a rebel, nothing else is there.

Why hasn't he then, he's such a despicable individual I don't believe him (GG)

“I think Mr Tice has rather lost his balance, and Mr Farage too, and I remind Mr Tice that I have on my telephone a text from him inviting me to be the Reform UK candidate in a by-election not that long ago. I’d prefer not to publish it, but if he keeps telling lies about me I will have to tell the truth about him.”

I accept your apology nicenanny 😀😀😀😀

Galaxy Fri 01-Mar-24 09:42:11

What is he trying to prove there? That Reform were bonkers enough to invite him to be a candidate. Aye.

We must wait until he publishes it

MayBee70 Fri 01-Mar-24 09:47:43

I think he’s a typical example of how, if you go too far to the left you end up as part of the far right. Horrible man. God help us if more like him get elected.
