George Galloway is the MP for Rochdale

He did refer to some local issues but his campaign was about Palestine-Israel. His win was resounding and his victory speech focussed on telling Keir Starmer his stance on Gaza is a major problem for Labour. Galloway’s latest party is called the the workers party, I think. Will they put up candidates in other northern former mill towns with large communities of people of Muslim fairy? (like my town)

What point have they made by electing an anti semitic misogynistic conspiracy theorist.

I hate to think. I sincerely hope no one on here is pleased about this anti semitic, misogynist, conspiracy theorist being elected, but I think I might be wrong.

Why was he elected?

I always say, never underestimate the silent majority.

They may not have been a majority.

But people shout off in politics, on any side.
Some are listening. But that is not at all to say they wont vote against something.

The key to who will win anything, lies with the silent people. Not the noisy ones.

I do sometimes think that those who shout in politics, miss many points.
They are too busy bigging themselves up, that they forget that it is not just themselves and their friends, who get to vote.

fancythat Fri 01-Mar-24 14:38:09

People think the silent people can all be ignored.

They most certainly cannot be.

The three main political parties all did badly in this election. GG and an Independent candidate had over 60% of the votes. This isn't just about Gaza it is a wake up call for all the main parties.

Good.

There are many people like me who have quite long been, "dont want to vote for any of the above" or whatever the phrase is.

Galaxy Fri 01-Mar-24 14:39:53

And it's always a surprise to the noisy ones, look at Brexit.

fancythat Fri 01-Mar-24 14:40:52

Yes it is.

I have just seen this on X and had to share.

Oh Lordy, absolutely shameful/disgraceful example of a man and now a flippin MP angry

Whitewavemark2 Fri 01-Mar-24 14:48:31

Interesting about the “silent majority”

I was thinking the same whilst watching Navalny’s funeral. Putin can suppress all he likes, but the ideas and opposition does not go away, they go underground and appear silenced. Likewise suppressing any form of protest will never get rid of it, and in many cases it grows. The more you refuse to listening the bigger the backlash when it comes.

Galaxy Fri 01-Mar-24 14:50:27

That's what happened with Brexit.

I am hoping that this was a one off protest vote and that at the GE a proper MP will be elected.

Iam64 Fri 01-Mar-24 15:05:06

I hope the Labour Party find a good candidate. S/he will have a challenge

Louella12 Fri 01-Mar-24 15:07:34

I just think that the ignorance everywhere is astounding.

People discussing Navalny as if he was the second coming. A man who made hideous comments about Arabs and Muslims. There's a video of him referring to immigrants as flies and cockroaches. In this video he is holding a gun to the head of a man in a keffiyeh. He was actually stopped from attending far right rallies because of his rabid views. Maybe it was 15 years ago but the evidence is there.

Amnesty International stripped him of prisoner of conscience just 3 years ago because of his hateful beliefs.

But no , let's buy him a bunch of flowers and light a candle

It would be laughable

George Galloway is another odious person but an annoyed electorate is a dangerous thing

And please. No more about Brexit. Judging by the chaos in europe at the moment with the farmers that's not the greatest place either.

I'd like to know why our MSM is so sadly lacking and I'd love to know why everyone seems to believe what they're told to believe

If you had read the post with more care you would have realised that it was about “the silent majority” and not Navalny, nor would have jumped to incorrect conclusions. I am more than aware of Navalny’s past.

My point is that suppressing opinion simply silences it - it does not stop it and sooner or later it will pop up again.

maddyone Fri 01-Mar-24 15:26:21

I think that the Labour Party will put up a very good candidate and therefore that person will win. Part of the reason GG won is because the Labour Party didn’t have a suitable candidate, following his antisemitic remarks which led to the Labour Party withdrawing support for him.

Right let's get rid of this is a Muslim vote for a start.
Galloway won 40% of the vote
The population of Rochdale is List 46.9% Christianity 28.8% no religion 18.8% Islam 0.3% Hinduism 0.2% Buddhism 0.1% Judaism 0.1% Sikhism 0.3% other 4.6% not stated
So highly unlikely that it is purely a Muslim victory.
It is a wake up call for Starmer and the LP headquarters. Firstly that he has to stop sitting on the fence about Gaza because people in the UK care about innocent people being slaughtered, and secondly that he has to stop interfering in local LP politics and deciding who can stand. I hope he gets both messages, but I very much doubt he will.

Apparently there is possibly a postal vote scam, 21 votes from 1 address.

Well that is a surprise. Tower hamlets spring to mind. What's the bet the police won't investigate.

Rather like a belt going around a person, the extreme right and extreme left meet in the middle. Both vile, both unacceptable. The one good thing to come out of last night's farrago of a by election is that Tice's gang failed dismally, which is presumably why he is making allegations of mobs outside.

Nobody in the HoC is looking forward to GG's arrival that's for sure.

See reports that Islamists interfered with this candidate. Bet you won't believe that either
I said earlier Galloway an extreme left wing anti Israel bigot, wouldbe applauded by the left wing grans net
Ooh the joy when a right wing candidate gets the boot. Glad to be proven right.

George Galaway is a dangerous misogynistic narcissist.
2012 defended Julian Assange who was accused by two women of rape “even taken at its worst, if the allegations are 100% true, even if a camera in the room captured them, they don’t constitute rape. ‘. He went on to describe woman A having dinner with JS at her flat, had ‘consensual sex with him, claims she woke up to him having sex with her again. This is something that can happen. I mean not everybody needs to be asked prior to each insertion’. (Guardian 2012)dddddd

In the 1987 election, he won a Glasgow seat for Labour. He was asked about a conference he attended in Mykonos. He said ‘I travelled and spent lots of time with people in Greece , many of whom were women, some of whom were known carcally to mr. I actually had sexual intercourse with some of the people in Greece’. (Sky News today)

He was a friend and fan of Saddam Hussein, long-standing supporter of Palestine. In 2013 while MP for Bradford West he walked out of a debate with a university student after discovering they were Israeli. ‘ I don’t recognise Israel and I don’t debate with Israelis” he said. (Sky News today)’

In 2019 he was sacked by Talk Radio over anti semitic comments.

And here he is, an MP

She clearly inhabits a parallel universe where he wasn’t expelled from the Labour Party over 20 years ago for saying on TV that the perpetrators in the Iraqi conflict should kill British soldiers. Ignorance is bliss I suppose.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 01-Mar-24 15:53:16

He is an opportunist just like Farage and others of his ilk.

He won’t last any longer than until the next election. He is best ignored.

That is another reason why I detest GG, our son served several tours in Iraq, along with his views on consensual (or should I say non consensual sex)

I think that will be difficult as I predict he will be popping up all over the media until the next GE (hopefully he will be unseated)

Whitewavemark2 Fri 01-Mar-24 16:02:22

There nothing he can achieve though. As far as parliament is concerned he is a non-event. Unless a vote is down to 1 to swing it one way or the other - and that is never going to happen.

The voter must be aware of that, which is why I think it was a protest vote - and don’t forget it was almost immediately after the Gaza debacle in the HoC.,

Well there's a bit of misleading propaganda.
Assange was supported by many of us. The rape charges were questionable, and Assange would have returned to Sweden to answer them but for the threat of deportation to the US.
UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Nils Melzer investigated the rape accusations against Assange and said he had never before seen a comparable case where a person was subjected to nine years of a preliminary investigation for rape without charges being filed. He said Assange's lawyers made over 30 offers to arrange for Assange to visit Sweden in exchange for a guarantee that he would not be extradited to the U.S. over unknown charges, and described such diplomatic assurances as routine international practice. Melzer criticised Swedish prosecutors for, among other things, allegedly changing one of the women's statements without her involvement, to make it sound like a possible rape. Melzer described the Swedish rape investigation as "abuse of judicial processes aimed at pushing a person into a position where he is unable to defend himself

I don't know what went on in Greece.

Saddam Hussein was a leader imposed on Iraq by the USA and funded and armed by them in order to combat the Iranian government which they saw as the enemy. He was friends with lots of people at different times.

I cannot think of any party's failings that would compell me to vote for this awful person. Rather not vote at all.He has no intentions of helping the people of Rochdale, he won his ticket on the back of people's misery, a misery which we can do nothing about, voted for by people who have no cares about the town they live in.
