Frank Hester, who has paid two lots of £5 million pounds into the Tory coffers has made some really appalling remarks about Diane Abbott. I cannot bear to repeat them but you can read about them here,
www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/mar/11/biggest-tory-donor-looking-diane-abbott-hate-all-black-women
He has made his fortune out of tech including lucrative contracts with the NHS.
I wonder if the Tories will now return his money?

British obsession with racism

I disagree that there is a ‘British obsession’ with racism - rather an acknowledgment that it exists and a recognition of the damage it causes to individuals and groups. There are several reputable reports about racism in Australia, and the unwillingness to talk about it, preferring to believe it doesn’t exist (in Australia) - when it clearly does. In short, British society is better at calling it out! (I can add links to articles / reports if you wish)

I’m not at all surprised the words were said, it is typical of the attitude of Tory party members.

A few years ago I was asked to help out waitressing at a local Conservative Association dinner, their attitude to the staff was appalling we were treated like skivvies. Overhearing some of their conversations racism, sexism was rife, the lower classes were of no consequence, they were of course personal conversations, but easy to overhear.

The caterer could not find staff for the event the following year.

Typical, really. So you're calling every Tory member out as a racist. Your one experience, because you say so doesn't make it true.
Think what you have said is appalling.

A fair few of my family are Conservative Party Members.

I find Katie59’s post offensive.

Having been to many Conservative do’s/dinners over the years I do not recognise the situation she describes.

Good Lord everyone - you must surely realise that talking in a racist language doesn’t mean that you are racist - do buck up everyone!

And in any case we get to keep the money and hope there will be more where that came from. Ker-ching!

Iam64 Wed 13-Mar-24 10:11:30

Whitewave - thank goodness for the buck up reminder 🤣😂🌞

Racism is wrong.

Tarring all Conservatives with the same brush is wrong.

Two wrongs will never make a right.

Katie59 Wed 13-Mar-24 10:12:39

We found it offensive waitressing, the attitudes of Tory MPs reflects the members in general, not all have right wing views but we know a good half of them do. Regularly we have had them drop the PC front and step out of line just like Hester

Why are my remarks prejudiced?

In my opinion it is rather lazy to lump all Conservative views together as if they have one hive mind

Dianne Abbot thinks that Jews don’t suffer racism but suffer prejudice the same as redheads 🤦🏼‍♀️
You couldn’t make it up, could you.

It’s a pity you didn’t meet David Amess before he was murdered.
He might have made you think differently about all conservatives

GrannyGravy13 Wed 13-Mar-24 10:34:31

I agree petra we first met David Ames nearly 40 years ago (in his previous constituency) a decent man, fantastic sense of humour.

Yes, Diane was wrong and should not have said that. It displayed ignorance.

However, what Anderson said was on another level.

I think the operative word in Katie59's post is 'some'.

She didn't say 'all' the attendees were racist and sexist.

I realise that our right wingers might be feeling rather beleaguered at the moment, but it helps to read what is actually written...

Can I explain better?

Racism is prejudice.
Tarring a whole group of people for the actions of a few is prejudice too.

Callistemon21 thank you for clarification, I know I am not firing on all cylinders at the moment and it doesn’t take a lot to confuse me.

luluaugust Wed 13-Mar-24 10:44:18

The phrase "He/She should be shot" was in use when I was small, it has Irish/American roots and was used in Black Beauty. I am amazed it is used by anybody in this day and age.

Granniesunite Wed 13-Mar-24 10:45:11

Frank Hester called for a woman an MP to be shot. Who in their right mind would announce this in a public place?

It beggars believe that this kind of hatred has taken so long to be made public! What kind of people listen to this then go home to their families and pretend all is ok..

His money position and power makes it ok for some..

GrannyGravy13 Wed 13-Mar-24 10:46:34

Actually MaizieD Katie59 posted

some of the conversations

along with implying that staff were difficult to find for the following year, nowhere did she post some people

You have a very jaundice view which is offensive. Perhaps the event you were waiting on picked up your attitude. Every single person I know who is a so called Tory, and I live in a Tory stronghold part of the UK is nothing like your description.
