The government is proposing to offer failed asylum seekers £3000 if they agree to go to Rwanda. I don’t get it, because won’t offering money to go to another country encourage more ineligible people rather than less to come to the UK knowing they will be relocated, with £3k to start a new life, ultimately anywhere they choose?

RUBBISH Callistemon Scotland NEEDS immigrants as does England but we are much more welcoming to people who come here The reason Scots move to other parts of the UK is because we have always been largely ignored by successive westminster governments.I'll take a guess that you might have sen the recent debacle in the commons when Starmer pushed the SNP vote aside to take precedence with HIS amendment!!

The sheer ignorance about Scotland on here is astonishing .

I'll also take a guess you didn't see the BBC apology yesterday about the so called "hate crime law" when they admitted no one had actually READ the damn thing so didn't realise its almost exactly the same as the law thats been in England and most of Europe since the early 2000's .Mind you an apology from the EBC has been long overdue for their disgusting discrimination about all pertaining to Independence .
YES that should read E B C ...its certainly NOT a Scottish service and never has been despite both the roots of TV and the BEEB being Scots

Sunak intends Ruanda as a deterrent, rather like prison is intended to deter.

Prison not only fails to deter it usually increases crime because of the effect of brutality in prisons.
Ruanda will not deter other desperate people.

The only cure for unwanted immigration among desperate peoples is to improve education and empowerment of the masses, especially women and girls, in those countries the immigrants come from.

The vile Rwanda plan is not for failed asylum seekers, people will be sent there pending the outcome of their asylum applications but even if they are then found to be eligible for asylum they won't be allowed to come back, it is cruel in the extreme. Imagine treating people who have already suffered persecution, war or disaster like this, it's shameful and deeply unchristian in a so called Christian country.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 23-Apr-24 11:34:55

Returning people with failed asylum applications have plummeted by 73% since the Tories took office - particularly since 2016.

A quite deliberate policy.

Callistemon, I am native to Scotland and the UK. However if Sunak is a danger to other vulnerable innocents I and my loved ones can be next in line for persecution.

I think you're safe, Caleo
Of course, if you vote for independence the Scots might start expelling the English and Welsh.
Although nearly half the people I know in Wales are Scottish anyway.

Maybe Labour don’t have a plan?

Still in development because the GE might still be a long way away and conditions change.

Yvette Cooper made these comments:

Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said the Rwandan scheme is an 'extortionately expensive gimmick' and that if Labour wins the next election, they will introduce an alternative plan.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Ms Cooper said: 'This is not a serious plan to actually tackle the problem. It's costing around half a billion pounds for just 300 people to be sent to Rwanda, that's less than 1 per cent of asylum seekers. It's not addressing the 99 per cent, it's not addressing the overall problem.

That's why Labour would replace the Rwanda scheme with a new plan to boost our border security, to go after the criminal gangs and their networks right across Europe.

Not just on the French coast, so that we prevent boats from reaching the French coast in the first place.

We'd also have stronger powers, stronger intelligence agreements, and new fast-track systems in the UK, so that we have a new returns and enforcement unit.

Because returns of failed asylum cases have just plummeted over the last Conservative period. We need to actually turn that round and make sure that the system is properly enforced'.

“My friend is from Tanzania and knows Rwanda well. She says it is green, vibrant and a great place to live now. If you are prepared to work there then you will do well.”

As long as you agree with the President and government policy it’s fine, disagreement is not tolerated.

The king has to give the royal assent yet - what a sticky situation for him, as he has been very clear of his thoughts on the subject, but if he baulks at signing there will be a constitutional crisis. I do not envy him.

Oh dear, no.

Another worry for him.
What if he refused? We'd have a Constitutional crisis!

I am frightened of Sunak because he would have me or people I love deported to Ruanda .

Surely you are not an illegal immigrant, Caleo?

I'm not saying I agree with this, btw, the eye-watering amounts of money involved should be spent setting up centres here and processing asylum seekers rapidly.

I suppose they have to do something but Rwanda seems rather extreme. Why not somewhere a bit more hospitable? Why are so many risking their lives to reach a far off country? There must be a lot of support available because they wouldn’t bother otherwise. Past guilt ?

Why? Is a massive and complicated question. It has to do with our colonial past, language, misinformation, family ties and of course desperation.

before anybody jumps on me, there are also those who would wish to exploit and do harm.

Did anybody see the place they will be living in Rwanda? It was on TV last night. Absolutely beautiful, clean, light, spacious …. i would happily live there. Lots of people are choosing to go there on holiday now.

My friend is from Tanzania and knows Rwanda well. She says it is green, vibrant and a great place to live now. If you are prepared to work there then you will do well.

As long as you’re not gay. Braverman is now saying Rwanda won’t work and the only thing that will work is to leave the ECHR. Which is what she has wanted all along.

Yvette Cooper said on Sky News that Rwanda will not be part of a Labour immigration plan.

What is the Labour plan?

I’d guess they wisely won’t announce any detailed plans, about that or anything else until the election is called. What would be the point in ping ponging now?

The government 's approach to immigration has been shambolic and utterly disgraceful. I used to think we were a decent humane society but we're not. Fgs if people can't claim asylum unless they are on British soil we are making them take unsafe routes.

Exactly that.

Read up on Saleh Ahmed Handule Ali.

But beware the wonderous HO does not come out of it well.

Five have lost their lives this morning in French waters trying to teach the U.K.

The people smugglers have to be stopped.

A Government minister doing the rounds this morning reiterated that any Afghan nationals who worked for/with the U.K. armed forces will not be sent to Rwanda, they will be settled here.

That's something I suppose. Let's just hope the promise is kept.
