Scottish island ferries debacle. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The chief executive of nationalised Scottish shipyard Ferguson Marine has been sacked only two years into the job after warning of further delays to a crucial CalMac ferry project.

David Tydeman’s £205,000-a-year contract was terminated by the Ferguson board after he told ministers that additional snags were likely. Delivery of the two new vessels is already six years late and more than £250m over budget.

I remember reading somewhere that Ms Sturgeon claimed that taking over Ferguson Marine would save 400 jobs, it would have been cheaper to give the 400 staff a Million Pounds each and close the yard down.

I feel sorry for the islanders. What a mess.

Maremia. How many of these teachers work full time. ? These figures are meaningless unless we know the full time equivalent. Scot Gov do this with the GP numbers. Now we are off topic !

I think there's been a far greater growth in pupil numbers in England and Wales whereas in Scotland pupil numbers have fallen. The higher ratio of teachers to pupils in Scotland is more by luck than design.

I wonder why children’s attainment is so poor and Scotland’s PISA stats have fallen through the floor, if there are all these extra teachers. hmm

Thank you NLnanna's post, for your refreshing perspective.
Here is one example of SNP success, for the unbelievers to chew over,

Teachers per 100,000 pupils
In SNP Scotland in Tory England in Labour Wales
7,559 5,723 5,684

Just read NLnanna's post, then looked at todays's date - brilliant 😁 😁

My thoughts exactly.. I'm assuming it was 1/4 when posted 😂

Probably best for NLnanna to stay where she is. Scotland has the lowest life expectancy in Western Europe and disproportionately poor health.

When l lived abroad for some bizarre reason l had a very rosy memory of pork pies, on returning they never matched up to the memory. Many expats seem to have the same experience of their motherland.

I'm an expat Scot living in Europe. I take a great deal of interest in what is going on in the UK. I try to be even handed about the news coming out of the UK. IMO the Scottish government are doing a great job in looking after the people of Scotland under very difficult circumstances. There is ignorance in the rest of the UK about what is devolved and what isn't. Believe me when I say that you would all be grateful for the leaders the Scots have.

Really?

We live here so I think we do know.
Getting news from 'home's when living overseas is quite different to living the reality.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 🤣

I’d love to know the whereabouts of this wonderful Brigadoon that certain Scottish Gransnetters speak of. No one I know in Scotland can find it. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Jings! My apologies OREO.
I looked up what 'OREA' meant, and it said 'exceptional coffee brewers... and unrivaled quality'.
Maybe not too far from the mark?

I’ll take that 😁

NLnanna I don't know where you get your information about Scotland from but it is colossally wrong. SNP have trashed education, housing, the economy, the NHS etc. They are secretive and indulge in expensive failed litigation and dodgy investments. Everything is worse since they came in.
I can only hope that the daft hate crime bill is the last nail in their coffin.

Mollygo Sun 31-Mar-24 16:11:09

Aveline

It is indeed your choice but your chosen party has done nothing good for the Scottish people and is set to make themselves a laughing stock over the Hate Crime bill coming in tomorrow.

Yes indeed. Come to Scotland and lie and you will be respected. Tell the truth and you’re guilty of a hate crime. I’m hoping the rest of the UK doesn’t follow suit.

You do all know that whats spent in Scotland isn't subsidised by England ,on the other hand every English project ...failed aircraft carriers included has a bill for just over 8% of the cost coming to us...THATS our "black hole" We built the Queensferry crossing ,reopened Railway stations closed by Beecham built hundreds of miles of roads and over a hundred thousand council houses not to mention the 22 Million trees in 2022 ,I dont have figures for last year. This was all done within our budget ...what you call the Barnett formula ..and we call a portion of our taxes that are returned to us with NO financial aid from WM.I can understand why WE are aggrieved at paying out for projects that have no affect on our lives like HS2 ,London Crossrail ,London Sewers ...the infamous 7 year late Bond St Station and yes the refurb of Big Ben and Buck house...but why on earth are you bothered about us spending OUR meagre budget OUR way .As to the "lost" funding well...everyone I know who donates to the ONLY Scottish party does it without specifying what its spent on...I couldn't care less as long as we end up Independent.MY money MY choice

My favourite biccy, have to have a pack of them in the cupboard at all times.

Isn't there a ferry built in Turkey being delivered very shortly. Onky taken two years and miniscule cost by comparison. Some say one of the late ferries will never sail due to the length of time some of the materials have been allowed to stagnate in construction. I worked in contracting and, from the programme about the contracting process for the ferries, if I had allowed half the stuff reported, I'd be in jail. The most recent CE had apparently made the most significant progress in his two years. His replacent lives in Canada, quite a commute or perhaps there will be a grant for him to live here as was given to Mark Carney when Bank of Eng Governor. It's only tax payers money!

it is far easier to deceive people than to persuade them they have been deceived!
Totally off topic, but evidently from tomorrow, you can be accused of a crime in Scotland for speaking the truth.

NemosMum Sun 31-Mar-24 11:43:43

M0nica absolutely right about this. Got to feel sorry for my Scottish friends and relatives. As Mark Twain wrote, it is far easier to deceive people than to persuade them they have been deceived!
